Contrary to expecta-tions, the TrafficMonth launched

with much fanfare inNovember did not makeany impact in the city. Itwas aimed at decongestingthe jam-packed roads and''chaurahas', but it failed toproduce the desired result.

While the traffic policeclaim that it was a success, many people, includingRWAs, view it as a mereadministrative exercise. The focus was on thebusiest ''chaurahas' and theworst congested areas likePurana Bus Adda 'chaura-ha', Maliwara Chowk,Turab Nagar Chowk,Chaudhry Morh, GhantaGhar, Delhi Gate, HapurTiraha, Meerut RoadTiraha, Mohan Nagar'chauraha', Lal Kuan, infront of Collectorate, HapurChungi, Nasirpur Phatak,MM College, New BusDepot , Bhat ia Morh ,

Rakesh Marg, NH-24 andUP Border.

Launching Traffic Month,SP Traffic Anil Kumar said,"Initially we will apply pro-hibitory orders to auto rick-shaws and automobiles inorder to bring about somediversions. Later, we willtake up the errant andheavy vehicles, so thatthere would be smooth traf-fic in coming days." Sincethen they have applied sev-eral procedures but trafficremains on the same track.

Stereotyped actionAt initial stages, SSP

Akhil Kumar had clearlyordered his men to followthe soft technique whilethey were going to teachthe traffic lessons to thepeople. Instead of gettinghim right, most traffic per-sonnel used to enforce theagenda on bikers and inno-cent vehicle owners. Theyfailed to control the errant

autos, 'dagga-mar' vehicles,t rucks andt r o l l e y s .These errantvehicles wenton moving intheir usual style.

Dur ing th i sRoad Safety Month,31 persons died, whilemore than three dozenchildren, men and womenwere badly injured. In realterms, police confinedthemselves only to checkingand issuing challan to vehi-

c l eowners. They failed toremove the encroachersfrom the roads, though theyclaimed that it was also ananti-encroachment drive.

Training camps wereorganised at several schoolsand colleges of the city toeducate the youngsters ontraffic discipline, but asusual it was an exercise infutility, since these youngdrivers were in no mood tolearn. Instead, they justneeded harsh punishment.

Police were trying to edu-cate the public through

Traffic still 'off track'posters during the TrafficMonth. Pollution checkingcamp, green card camp, blood group camp and eveninsurance camps wereorganised but all wentunnoticed due to the dis-missive attitude of thepolice personnel.

One could see the over-loaded public transports, sirens pressure, red andblue hooters lights, andblack glasses on cars andfaulty number plates onmany vehicles. SP, Traffic,Anil Kumar finally accept-ed the truth that the traf-fic jam was the biggestchallenge before the city.

He said, "We got sponta-neous result on variousroads immediately afterremoving the encroachment. And we are committed todoing so in days to come."

Traffic at a glanceBulldozers and atten-tive police pickets

could not deter thepeople who werealways responsibleto create insecuri-ty and indisciplineon the roads. Alarge number ofRWA members

have lodged com-plaints to the DM of

the city about thesefake checking on various

roads. Kuldeep Saxena, asenior member of theFederation of IndirapuramRWA, has sharply reactedto this recently concludedTraffic Month. He said, "Atmost of the 'chaurahas', traf-fic police stopped every driv-er in the name of checkingdocuments instead of tellinghim or her about traffic rulesin a dignified manner."Admits Sunil Srivastava,ADM, city, "By taking les-sons from previous experi-ences, we realise that theTraffic Month did not comeup to our expectations due tolack of co-ordination amongdifferent departments."

During thisRoad Safety

Month, 31 per-sons died, whileover three dozenchildren, menand women werebadly injured.

Traffic moving at a snail’s pace.
