Why are we here?

• Create a blog • Promote a blog • Find other blogs • Read other blogs • Subscribe to blogs • What else?

michael.starks0@gmail.com 4 Michael Henry Starks

A blog is a non-private journal on the Web

• A blogger writes posts for a blog • Personal, business, educational, or whatever. • Posts appear in reverse chronological order. • Each post is followed by a comment field. • You can invite people to view your blog. • But anyone who finds your blog can see your

posts and your readers’ comments.

michael.starks0@gmail.com 5 Michael Henry Starks

What’s so great about a blog?

• Fast and easy to set up • Free • Anyone can be a publisher • You can constantly add, edit and delete • Brings communities of people together • Creates a lasting archive • Text, photos, video

michael.starks0@gmail.com 6 Michael Henry Starks

Things to consider…

• What is the purpose of your blog? – Personal – Social – Business

• Who are you trying to reach? • How often will you update your blog?

michael.starks0@gmail.com 7

Blogging is for conversation and relationship building. If you only want to vent or make announcements, no one will read your posts.

Michael Henry Starks

The three most important social media are blogs, Facebook and Twitter

• Blog – a website containing your posts

• Facebook – a website containing brief posts by people you select

• Twitter – a website containing very brief posts (140 characters) by people you select

BUILDING YOUR AUDIENCE

michael.starks0@gmail.com 14 Michael Henry Starks

Toughest job can be the headline.

• Your post’s title competes with every message, blog post and headline of all your subscriber’s other subscriptions.

• You have maybe 3 seconds to get that person to click on your headline.

• For ideas: – Judy Dunn: 5 Magical Headlines to Make Your Blog Posts Go Viral. For

Bloggers by Bloggers, Feb. 22. (also in Backup section of this presentation)

– Xanga home page always has good blog post headlines.

RSS enables people to subscribe to each new update on your blog.

• RSS (Really Simple Syndication; sometimes “Atom”) feeds updates to a subscriber. – Syndication like a newspaper

column or comic strip. – Create content in one place and

make it available in many places. • Reader (sometimes “aggregator”)

is where you see headlines of updates on your subscription blogs and websites. – Automatically adds updates. – Keeps track of what you’ve read.

• Video: RSS in Plain English www.youtube.com/watch?v=0klgLsSxGsU

• Click it to set up delivery of a Web page’s new content to your email inbox or your reader.

• Add it to your blog so your readers can subscribe to your posts.
