A community-wide healthy lifestyles initiative for kids and families
GetUp, Montgomery County is about helping our kids make healthier lifestyle choices, especially when it comes
to eating better and being more physically active.
It’s about driving a culture change in Montgomery County where community partners make it easier for
kids and families to lead healthier lives.
Why do we need this?
Ohio’s kids are increasingly unfit Ohio’s kids now weigh in as the 15th fattest in the nation At least 500,000 kids in Ohio age 10-17 are currently
overweight or obese An estimated 24% of local kids are overweight or obese
(Children’s Medical Center parent survey,2008). Poor health has lifetime impact for our kids Healthy kids learn better and live longer lives
Poor health is costly For families, health care providers, our education system
and ultimately for our community An out-of-shape, high-cost future workforce can not be
competitive for new jobs
Why do we need this?
A closer look at the cost factor as adults $1400 – estimated amount an overweight or obese
person spends each year for health care above that of a fit person (Journal of Health Affairs study, 7/09)
358,736 - estimated Montgomery County adult population currently overweight or obese
$502 million –annual additional spend by Montgomery County unfit adults verses fit adults
$25 million – projected annual savings* if just five percent** of Montgomery County’s unfit population adopts a healthier lifestyle
Lost productivity – unmeasured!
• Collective estimate based on individual spend using JHA $1400 per calculation; not an organizational savings projection. ** This equates to 17,936 adults locally significantly reducing their BMI levels to a healthy range. Behavior change should be
considered a long-term process.
