Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter
Dear Dr. Winter, How can I protect my child's teeth? The best way to answer that question is to first discuss
when should my child see a dentist? The best way to preventoral health problems is to take your child to a dentist regularly. After your child's first dental visit-which should occur aboutix months after your child's first tooth erupts or by the child'second birthday-he or she should see the dentist every six
months. Early visits will help familiarize your child with thedental office, reducing anxiety and making future visits lesstressful. In addition to examining the development of your
child's mouth, the dentist can teach you how to ensure goodoral health and recommend special preventive care ifnecessary.
Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease amongchildren, and unfortunately, children who develop cavities inheir baby teeth are more likely to develop cavities in their
permanent teeth, as well. Protect your child from tooth decayand other oral health issues by taking steps to care for yourchild's teeth throughout his or her childhood.
The next question is how to protect your child from toothdecay. Prolonged exposure to sugar-containing liquids cancause tooth decay in children,so limit your child's consumptionof sugary beverages like soda or fruit juices. If you give yourchild a sippy cup for long periods of time, fill it only withwater. Children should learn to drink from a regular cup asearly as possible so that liquid is less likely to collect aroundeeth that way. Also try to limit your child's consumption ofugary or starchy snacks, especially those that can remain stuck
on the teeth after eating. As a parent, you should care for your child's oral hygiene
until the child is old enough to take responsibility for theirdaily routine of brushing AND flossing.. Make sure your childbrushes for two minutes at least twice a day using a pea sizedamount of fluoridated toothpaste.
Before age two you can clean your child's gums with adamp cloth and brush with water. Flossing should begin as
oon as your child has two teeth that touch each other. Makeure your child gets fluoridated water whether it's bottled orrom the tap. Lastly. The best advise we can give you is to lead
by example. Brushing and flossing your teeth with your childwill teach him or her to understand the importance of goodhabits and good oral hygiene.
Dear Dr. Winter, how do I decide if it's better to have aoot canal and crown lengthening or just pull it and place anmplant?
Great question! Your dentist will look at the remainingooth structure, length of the root and condition of your
adjacent teeth and give you the pro's and cons of each option.
Generally speaking if a tooth can be saved for a minimumof 5 years that treatment may be acceptable. So if there is along root left and the gum tissue is healthy, a root canalprocedure and judicious crown lengthening may be a greatchoice. If the prognosis is poor and it is difficult to get at least4 mm of clean tooth to cement a crown to with at least 2 mmof additional root that the gum tissue can adhere to ( we callthis biologic width) then the tooth should be removed, socketgrafting should be performed and an implant placed. Germantowns Jesse Thielke, who is a member of theW Wrestling Team, won the Championship series, earn-g him a spot on the 2013 USA World Wrestling Team.
Thielke, the youngest member on the US team, earnede title of being the number one Greco-Roman wrestler ine United States at 60kg/132.5 lbs.
Last weekend in Stillwater, Oklahoma the top seniorvel wrestlers in the United States, battled to earn the
onor of representing the U.S. at the Worldhampionship in Budapest, Hungary, Sept. 16-22.hielke came into the tournament as the number threeed, after following a third place performance at the USpen in April.
By being one of the top seeds, Thielke earned a byethe first round. In round two, Thielke pinned Joe
eNova from the United States Olympic Educationenter, in Marquette, Michigan, in 1:39. Thielke facedeteran Greco-Roman wrestler Marco Lara from the USrmy next. Thielkes explosiveness proved to be too muchr Lara with Thielke winning 7-1 and moving into thehampionship series. In order to earn a spot on the USeam, one must win two out of t hree championship match-s. Thielke faced Ryan Mango, brother of two-timelympian and multiple World Team member Spencer
Mango. The younger Mango will be a senior at Stanford. In the first match, Thielke handedly won a 9-2
Technical Fall. In the second match both Thielke andMango scored back and forth to take the lead. With onlyseconds remaining and the score tied at 5, Mango scoredto win 8-5. In the third match. Thielke opened with a quicktwo point takedown. Mango answered with a throw, butThielke countered and Mango only received one point.
Thielke was still up by one. Thielke responded with hisown takedown and increases his lead to 4-1. With only58 seconds left Mango scored a three point throw, tyingthe score 4-4, but the tie would have gone to Mango, who scored last. Mango was then charged with a cautionfor passivity and ordered to the mat, giving Thielke anopportunity to score. With seven seconds left, Thielkescored a three point throw to win the match.
Thielke, now back in Germantown, will take a fewweeks off from full-time training; give back to the sport, byteaching other young aspiring wrestlers at camps acrossWisconsin. The team is due back at the Olympic TrainingCenter in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in July.
The U.S. World Wrestling Team will travel to Poland inAugust for a warm-up tournament, before theChampionships. Jesse Thielke
