IamalsoexcitedtohaveawonderfulExecutiveCommitteeandBoardofDirectorstocollaboratewiththisyear.WehaveworkedhardtoputtogetheradiversegroupofpresentationsforourFallmeeting.Dr.YuliaIossifova,whojoinedGLSin2009,willbepresentingherresearchontheriskofmycosisamongindividualswithsilicosis.I

Message from AIHA to Local Section and Volunteer Group Leaders Inthefallof2009,theAIHABoardofDirectorsbegantheprocessofdevelopinganewstrategicplanfortheassociationtocarryusthroughthenextfiveyears.Thateffortculminatedatthe2010BoardstrategicplanningmeetingheldthispastJuly.RepresentativesfromtheAcademyofIndustrialHygiene,theAmericanIndustrialHygieneFoundation,LocalSectionsandABIHwereincludedthroughouttheprocess,makingforacohesiveandinclusiveplanthatwillguideoureffortsinthecomingyears. TheAIHA2011-2015strategicplancanbefoundonourWebsiteat.Pleaseusethestrategicgoalsandassociatedprioritiesdefinedinthestrategicplantohelpguideyourvolunteergroupprioritiesandefforts. Inadditiontothenewstrategicplantherewereseveralotherimportantoutcomesfromthemeeting:1. Wedevelopedanewmission

statementthatisconciseandeasilyunderstood:“CreatingKnowledgetoProtectWorkerHealth.”WealsodevelopedanewvisionstatementthatIthinktrulyinspiresustoaction:“EliminationofWorkplaceIllnesses.”

AsInotedinmyPresident’sMessageintheSeptemberissueofThe Synergist,oneofthemostimportantoutcomesofthemeetingwascomingtoconsensusthatindustrialhygieneisanexposureriskassessmentandmanagementdisciplineundertheumbrellaofpublichealth.
