urham Furniture and The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association* are proud to present the Mount Vernon Home Collection, George Washington: Architect, the first introduction in a series of furniture collections inspired by the life, home and character of one of the greatest men in American history.
A man of practicality and vision, George Washington had a keen appreciation for the power of architecture as an influential form of communication. No where else is this more evident than at Mount Vernon—George Washington’s estate on the banks of thePotomac River. Washington acquired the estate in 1754, and spent nearly 45 years transforming it into his notion of a model plantation and home. He was intimately involved in the development of everything from the gardens and grounds to the remodeling and decoration of the Mansion—shaping it into a tangible expression of the New Republic and the ideals upon which it was founded—virtue, prosperity, opportunity and freedom.
Durham’s reputation for producing furniture of the highest quality and design dovetails perfectly with Washington’s own meticulous attention to detail and appreciation for superior craftsmanship—qualities he insisted be incorporated into his various architectural projects. The George Washington: Architect collection is built to last for generations, crafted from the finest North American maple and available in 40+ finishes. The heavy, antique brass hardware features flat, grooved sides and a subtle bead-and-twist motif on the face. The main design element, the heart-shaped scroll motif incorporated onto beds, mirrors and door pieces, was inspired by the decorative pattern Washington chose to adorn the crown molding in the central passageway of his home.
* The Mission of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association is to preserve, restore and manage the estate of George Washington to the highest standards and to educate visitors and people throughout the world about the life and legacies of George Washington, so that his example of character and leadership will continue to inform and inspire future generations. Mount Vernon is owned and maintained in trust for the people of the United States by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, a private, non-profit organization founded in 1853. A portion of the proceeds from your purchase of the Mount Vernon Home Collection goes toward the preservation of this historic property. For more information please visit www.mountvernon.org.
