Guest Speaker
The Honorable Elizabeth B. Lacy Senior Justice, Supreme Court of Virginia
The Honorable Elizabeth B. Lacy became the fi rst woman to serve on the bench of the Supreme Court of Virginia when she was appointed by former Virginia Governor Gerald L. Baliles in November 1988. She was confi rmed in that position by the Virginia General Assembly, which conferred a second 12-year term in 2001. Justice Lacy retired from the Court, taking senior status, in August 2007. She is currently a member of the McCammon Group, a provider of dispute resolution services based in Richmond.
Prior to her tenure on Virginia’s high court, Justice Lacy was appointed in 1985 by then-Governor Charles S. Robb to serve as a judge of the Virginia State Corporation Commission, where she was the fi rst woman to serve in that role, as well. She also held the position of Virginia’s Deputy Attorney General for Judicial Affairs, prosecuting consumer protection violations and overseeing state antitrust laws, state regulations, and confl ict of interest statutes. In Texas earlier in her career, she worked in the Offi ce of the Attorney General and for the Texas Legislative Council.
Justice Lacy is a graduate of Saint Mary’s College at Notre Dame, Indiana; the University of Texas Law School; and the University of Virginia School of Law, where she earned an LLM in 1992. She was an adjunct professor of law at the University of Richmond from 1995–2003 and holds numerous honorary degrees. She is the recipient of many awards, including the Robert R. Merhige, Jr. Outstanding Achievement Award from the John Marshall American Inn of Court and the William Green Award from the University of Richmond School of Law. Most recently she was recipient of the Virginia Bar Association’s Gerald L. Baliles Distinguished Service Award for exceptional service and contribu-tions to the bar and the public at large. The Library of Virginia honored Justice Lacy by naming her as one of the eight Women in History for 2008.
In addition to teaching, lecturing, and presenting on wide-ranging legal matters, Justice Lacy has chaired many educational policy bodies, including the ABA’s Council of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar.
Justice Lacy is married to D. Patrick Lacy, Jr., and resides in Richmond. She is the mother of four sons and grandmother of three children.

The Background of the Academic Robe
The academic robes worn at American ceremonies today go back to the Middle Ages. In Medieval Europe, men and women typically wore gowns or robes that evolved to include different colors that signifi ed various
professions, trades, and religious orders. The oldest universities of northern Eu-rope, such as Oxford or Paris, grew out of church schools, and both faculty and student were regarded in the Middle Ages as part of the clergy. Hence they wore clerical garb, largely borrowed from the monastic dress of the day, not merely on special occasions, but as their regular clothing. In the United States today, the American Council on Education Administration administers the Academic Costume Code, which provides guidelines for the wearing of academic robes.
In the Middle Ages, the level of elaborate decorations on their gowns could distinguish undergraduates, bachelors, and masters. The wide velvet borders extending down the front of the doctoral gown, as well as the velvet bars on the sleeves, are either black velvet, or are colored according to the scholarly fi eld of the wearer.
The hood of the academic robe was originally designed as a utilitarian head cover worn in bad weather and otherwise dropped to the shoulders. Students and faculty alike initially wore the hood; but in the early sixteenth century, the hood was restricted to graduates, becoming the mark of a degree holder. Each college of study has a distinctive, color-lined hood by which graduates may be recog-nized in the academic procession. The length of the hood worn for the master’s degree must be three and one-half feet, and for the doctor’s degree, four feet. The hoods are lined with the offi cial color or colors of the college or university conferring.
In today’s ceremony, you will see Juris Doctor and Master of Laws graduates wearing the doctoral robe with velvet cap and tassel. Each of the graduates will be wearing a purple hood lined with green, signifying education in the area of law at George Mason.
