I n t r o d u c t i o n

This bibliography w a s assembled in p r e p a r a t i o n for an Alaska Mineral Resource Assessment Program study o f the Sitka q u a d r a n g l e by the U . S . G e o l o g i c a l Survey. It c o n s i s t s of 366 references related t o t h e g e o l o g y of t h e S i t k a quadrangle, including selected references on the r e g i o n a l g e o l o g y of southeastern Alaska .

The Sitka 1:250,000 scale q u a d r a n g l e encompasses major p o r t i o n s of Admiralty and C h i c h a g o f I s l a n d s , and the northern half of Baranof I s l a n d , t h r e e o f the l a rger islands in southeastern Alaska. The town of S i t k a is l o c a t e d i n t h e south-central part of t h e quadrangle on t h e w e s t c o a s t o f B a r a n o f Island ( F i g u r e 1).

P u b l i c a t i o n s on the g e o l o g y of t h e r e g i o n date b a c k to the l a t e 1800's when e x p l o r e r s took a n interest in t h e i s l a n d s f o r their m i n e r a l resources. A w i d e v a r i e t y of geological literature has b e e n published since then. Each reference has been assigned a subject c o d e i n the l e f t m a r g i n f o r q u i c k indexing of topics of i n t e r e s t ; t h e codes also i n d i c a t e whether t h e reference i s a r e a - s p e c i f i c or regional i n scope (Table 1).
