The widening reach of social media is creating a ground shift in the news industry. And there is much to be learned as we are still in the early days of experimentation.
This is especially true in the realm of mobile web. Last year, a report found that social media drove 34 percent of mobile web traffic as opposed to 17 percent of desktop traffic.
The continuous change in our consumption habits and the increased interactivity of social media will ultimately make mobile a critical gateway for content.
But to use the parlance of journalism, we must not bury or lose sight of the lede:
Social media is not the boon of the traditional journalism industry, nor is it a panacea. It is merely a natural extension of our technical evolution and it is up to us to steer it in the right direction.
We convene today to define a new narrative in which social media, and digitisation in general, is at the heart of all journalistic progress. It is the mission of the Global Editors Network to bridge the gap between the different generations of editors, between content creators and technology providers, and between established media and new storytellers.
And for the next three days of the GEN Summit 2015, we invite you all to take part in defining that narrative.
We would like to shed light on some of our exciting programmes and their culmination points at this years Summit. The Editors Lab Final, the world cup of news hackathons, brings together more than 40 contestants from all over the world to compete in creating an innovative newsroom prototypes. Similarly, the Startups for News Final will crown a startup with a unique offering to journalists and journalism.
Our main evening event, the Data Journalism Awards Ceremony, will honour the best in data reporting and newsgathering. Supported by Google, CaixaBank and the Knight Foundation, the Awards are an international competition that rewards the most innovative data-driven journalism projects. This year, we selected 14 winners from more than 480 entries from all over the world.
We also invite you to visit our bootcamps on wearables and virtual reality journalism.
Participants can visit the Project Syria demo space: an immersive storytelling experience that aims to give voice to the plight of the Syrian children affected by the ongoing war.
Finally, this summit allows us to introduce the Climate Publishers Network, a collaboration initiative by 25 founding partners (see page 12) that aims to syndicate articles related to climate change free of charge in the run-up to COP21 in Paris.
Just like last year, we are honoured today to hold the GEN Summit at the beautiful grounds of the Centre de Cultura Contempornia de Barcelona. We are also grateful to our host, the Generalitat de Catalunya, for their hospitality and unwavering support.

We are in the prehistory of wearable news: the devices exist, but not yet the usages in both content creation and content consumption. Connected watches and other wearable devices might not disrupt journalism, but they will be a new way to listen to news through text to speech technologies or fast streaming reading. Sensor journalism will also appear, a sophisticated blend of crowdsourcing, big data and wearables. this bootcamp will allow editors to make the difference between gadgets and really interesting new devices empowering people or improving news distribution.

2 - From bitcoiNs to bitNeWs: toWards the oNe-ceNt article Can the itunes model fit to the news industry? is it better to sell 100,000 articles at one cent rather than 1,000 articles at one euro? this bootcamp will check what the benefits are for digital media to unbundle content and use specific platforms for selling their content. the promise is rich, from digital kiosks selling individual articles to paid-for services using bitcoins. the Data Journalism Awards (dJa) is an international competition recognising the excellence in the field. the fourth edition of the dJa received more than 480 submissions with judges deliberating over the most diverse selection of entries to date. We selected 78 finalists for the shortlist.
Simon Rogers, the director of this years dJa, said that the standard of entries was incredibly high. the entries represent every kind of data journalism; from long-read investigations to quick-hit visualisations, the whole spectrum of this growing field is represented in the shortlist, he explained.
Paul Steiger, executive Chairman of propublica and dJa Jury president, added: this years entries were the strongest yet. the winners came from a broad mix of countries, including the united States, the united Kingdom, three countries in Continental europe, three in latin america, and one in the middle east plus a consortium of 45 news organisations spread across six continents. the breadth underlines how the skills and impact of data journalism are spreading rapidly around the world and becoming increasingly crucial to the work of new and traditional media alike.

Startups for news is an international competition that rewards the most innovative start ups disrupting the media industry. gen is bringing you startups that challenge the status quo with new editorial services for newsrooms.
With this programme, gen is helping create interaction between start up innovators and senior media executives, thus encouraging the implementation of innovative practices in the newsroom. For start up innovators, this programme is the platform to access senior executives who can take them to the next level. For media executives, it is a unique opportunity to discover the tools that will shape the future of journalism and to come away with a fresh perspective on media innovation from the most cutting -edge entrepreneurs.
From January to may, gen showcased 16 startups, which faced off through online pitch battles. every two weeks, the video presentations of two startups working on a similar theme were posted on the gen website. the public voted for their favourite startup, using 1Worldonlines voting technology. the eight winning teams won the opportunity to pitch their work at the gen Summit.

the editors Lab programme is a worldwide series of hackdays hosted by leading news organisations such as BBC, el pas, reuters... editors lab brings together developers, journalists and designers from top newsrooms to build news prototypes during an intensive two-day competition.
the global editors network has already run three successful editors lab seasons. every year, the season culminates at the editors lab Final where the winning teams from each national hackdays battle it out for the title of editors lab Champion (see opposite page).

1/ editors lab gathers around 10 teams of media innovators from the best newsrooms in the country for a two-day competition. the teams are composed of one developer, one journalist and one designer.
2/ the teams work on a theme such as newsgaming, rethinking live-blogging, improving loyalty, re-imagining Comment, etc.
3/ they develop news prototypes: apps, new
features for the website, interactive visualisations, games, widgets, etc.
4/ they attend workshops given by our partners who share their expertise on the editors lab theme.
5/ the winning team is selected by a jury of experts. the winner is then invited to take part in the editors lab Final.
