GATOR TALES NEWS & VIEWS OF
BLUE HERON PINES GOLF COURSE COMMUNITY 29200 Jones Loop Rd, Punta Gorda, Florida 33950
Volume 28 Issue 6 Blueheronpineshoa.net June - July 2019
President’s Message
Does anybody
miss the love bugs yet?
This is being written mid
-May, and one can only
hope that they’ve be-
come a distant memory
by the time this issue is published. This season
seemed to be the worst in several years. Not only
do they create a mess when they splatter on your
car, a biker friend confided that they also taste
nasty. I’ll take his word for it.
This is the first of our “online delivery”
issues. By keeping Gator Tales online, we can of-
fer enhanced and expanded content while also sig-
nificantly reducing costs. It’s a win-win situation
where everybody benefits...especially the readers
and advertisers. Of course there will always be
hard printed copies for our neighbors who do not
have internet or email.
I’d like to give a tip of the hat to Peter
McNaughton, Wilson Yerk and everybody on the
Gator Tales team who lent a hand in this transition
effort. It would not have been possible without
your vision and hard work.
Enjoy your summer wherever you are,
folks, and be safe!

Calendar The Calendar is published
every month in Gator Tales and a copy is on each
of the bulletin boards. There have been many dif-
ferent events that are being added or discontinued.
Please, if you are in an event that is no longer held
or you are adding an event, please contact Mau-
reen Heger or Jim Sievert to have the calendar cor-
rected. If an event is only for a month or three, that
should be put on the calendar. If you find an error
or omission on the calendar, please contact us to
fix it. Thank you!
As many of you know, we have been
discussing a change in the way the Gator Tales
is published and distributed. Rather than print-
ing “hard” copies and delivering them door-to-
door, we have been moving towards electronic
printing and distribution for nearly a year. The
time has come to make the switch.
As we discussed, electronic publication
and distribution will save us several thousand
dollars per year in printing costs, and considera-
bly decrease the burden of distribution. Of
course, we will still print a small number of
black & white copies for distribution to our resi-
dents without access to email or internet. Ad-
vertisers will benefit because they can now pre-
sent videos with sound, if they choose to do so.
This change will become effective with
the upcoming June-July combined issue. Resi-
dents will be sent an email announcing the issue
is ready to distribute, and the email will include
a link to the latest copy. Just click on the link to
access it. As always, you will still be able to
browse the Gator Tales directory within the
BHP HOA website for copies of past issues.
If you have questions, please don’t hesi-
tate to contact your HOA Board members or
myself.
Thanks!
Larry Roberts

Entertainment Committee

deck or pool area should be on the calendar.
Please contact Maureen or Jim for availability.
Private parties must still be booked thru the

questions, please let us know.
Host Committees The months are quickly
passing us by, and the calendar is pretty wide
open for events. Please hold your meetings and
come up with some ideas for event(s) sched-
uled for your month.
We would like to thank all
the residents of BHP who helped
make the Horse Races such as
success. We could not have done
it without all who volunteered. Thanks to The Bol-
yard's, the Richardson's The Niemann's, the Sixts,
the Schutz's, Ken Ralph, Trish Wiggington, Tom Fee, John Lucas,
The Robinsonn's, the Skoreks, Wayne Carter and Carl Sullivan.
As you can see, "It takes a Village".
We were able to contribute to the HOA and through the gen-
erosity of our patrons a special collections was done which enabled
us to donate to breast cancer research.
Once again we thank you for your time and generosity

What is more enjoyable than to sit and
watch a butterfly flit around in the garden?
South Florida has a climate that attracts butter-
flies all year; you simply need to encourage
them to stay around and lay eggs to create a
new generation of butterflies. Select plants
that give adult butter-
flies energy and, also,
plants that provide
food for caterpillars.
Luckily, we have hun-
dreds of plants that
attract them; native
plants are best (and
easiest to maintain be-
cause they are drought
tolerant, disease resis-
tant, and adapt better
in our environment).
Choose plants
that grow to different
heights and have different bloom times. Con-
sider shrubs, trees, vines, as well as flowers.
Different types of plants attract different types
of butterflies. If possible, group several of the
same kind of plants to give unity to your gar-
den. Vines not only give height to the garden,
but also provide food for both caterpillars and
adults.
Butterflies have 4 life stages: egg, cat-
erpillar (larva), pupa (chrysalis) and adult.
Many colorful plants sold as butterfly plants,
will only provide nectar for the butterfly, not
food for the caterpillars.
Butterflies are attracted to flowers that
smell sweet and they especially like orange,
yellow, pink, purple and red colors. They polli-
nate the flowers as they sip nectar from it.
They need sun to keep their
body temperature high, so
provide some flat stones or
mulch near the butterfly
plants for them to rest on.
Butterflies like bottlebrush,
cassia, coral bean, coral hon-
eysuckle, dill, firebush, fire-
cracker plant, lantana, pars-
ley, porterweed, purple
cornflower, the gumbo
limbo tree, and many, many
more. Our Florida monarchs
stay here year around, breed
year around, and are partial
to milkweed. Our state butterfly, the Zebra
Longwing, deposits its small yellow eggs on
young leaves and tendrils of Purple Passion-
flower.
To get REALLY involved, pick up a
copy of famous Florida naturalist, Roger Ham-
mer’s book ATTRACTING HUMMING-
BIRDS AND BUTTERFLIES IN TROPICAL
FLORIDA.

Plan Ahead for a Hurricane Charlotte Country
Disaster Planning Guide
Hurricane season is almost here. Here
are some tips to minimize damage to your prop-
erty and others in the event of a hurricane. Clear
your yard of loose objects which become poten-
tial airborne missiles in high winds. Place items
inside your house or shed.
Anchor objects that cannot be moved
inside (no matter how heavy or large). Close all
windows and doors. FYI: Taping glass will not
prevent breakage. Store documents and valu-
ables in waterproof containers; secure in highest
possible spot.
Some examples of things to secure:
Lawn Furniture
Potted plants
Gazing Balls
Statues
Bicycles
Trash Cans
Garden Hose(s)
Decorative flags and poles
Any other decorative items
