Principal’s Note: Mary McKasy Dear Gleason Lake Families, I would like to thank all staff, parents, students, and community members for the excellent start to the 2012-13 school year. The partnership between families and school staff is a vital component to educating and inspiring our students’ growth. Sustaining this strong home-school connection encourages students to possess an enthusiasm for learning that we know results in academic, social and emotional success. Our PTO has done an outstanding job of helping to kick off the year. Our volunteers are extremely valuable to the success of our school by offering many hours of service that enhance Gleason Lake’s educational experiences. We truly appreciate all that you do! With the beginning of a new year comes the pleasure of welcoming our families that are new to Gleason Lake. We look forward to working with you and encouraging your participation. This is truly a supportive learning environment where we place a high value on our home/school connection. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance as your family transitions into the Gleason Lake community. Gator Pride on the Lakeside We are continuing to focus on the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS). This is a program that assists staff in identifying positive expectations for student behaviors. All staff members are working together to provide clear and consistent expectations for students. The teachers are explicitly teaching the expectations for appropriate student behavior in the hallway, bathrooms, lunchroom, playground and classrooms. As a Gleason Lake staff, we are committed to providing active supervision, which is a proactive measure in helping to ensure the safety and develop a sense of belonging for all our students. Our slogan is “Gator Pride on the Lakeside - I will respect Myself, Others, Property and Community.” When pride strategies are implemented school-wide, staff and students benefit by having an environment that is conducive to teaching and learning. Gator Pride is all about building a positive school-wide community. We plan to have our first Gator Pride assembly on Friday, September 14. We are encouraging all students to wear their Gator Pride or Gleason Lake spirit wear on Fridays. If you are in need of a scholarship to purchase a Gator Pride T-shirt please contact Mary McKasy or Cindy Trudell.

Principal’s Note, cont. Morning Drop Off It is very important to continually consider safety during morning and afternoon transition times. Cautious speeds and courteous driving will result in maintaining a safe environment for our students in this area. Please be sure students exit on the curbside of the car and parents should not get out of their vehicle. Children need to be ready to get out of the car so the line of traffic is able to keep moving. Please do not park and leave your vehicle unattended in this area during the morning drop off times of 8:45 - 9:15 am. If you need additional time, please park your car in the parking lot and walk your child in to school. Dismissal Pick Up • Parents must send a written note to the classroom teacher in the
morning, indicating who will be picking up your child. • If you will be picking up your child EVERY day, one note for
the year will suffice. However, if there is ever a change in that routine, a note is required.
• If your child regularly takes the bus or goes to Home Base, a note is only required if there is a change in that routine.
• Students with a Pick Up Pass will go to the Media loft and give the pass to a staff member who is supervising the area,
• The parent or the individual picking up the student will need to sign the student out at the “bubble” area and wait there until the student is released to the adult. Parents are required to park their cars and come into the building to get their children. The front of the building is marked for parking places at this time of day.
• Parents are responsible for picking up children promptly at 3:50. • We ask that you respect the teacher’s classroom time and not
pick up your child before school is over.
Please join us in welcoming the 2012-2013 school year and the fall season! All Gleason Lake students, staff and families are invited and welcome. It should be a fun evening for everyone. The cost is $2.00/person at the door which includes two slices of pizza, veggies, fruit, dessert and a beverage. September 21st 2012, 5.00 to 7.00 p.m. Food and Outdoor Fun! David Kottke will be providing the music.

Freddie Contreras News from the PTO
Freddie Contreras, President Welcome Back! What a busy time! Greeting new and returning families, looking at all the big smiles of friends reunited after summer break, laughter and enthusiasm permeating the school once again. It reminds us it’s time to start our new school year. The energy experienced during this time is quite exciting and then the daily routine starts to kick-in and everything starts to fall in place. I’m ready for the routine! As a past PTA president once said, “Now is the time to start building memories”. There are upcoming opportunities where you can use your time and/or talent to create memories by volunteering. We will cherish this glimpse of time as we look back and reflect on our children’s elementary school years. I look forward to working with our Gleason Lake Elementary School Community. For several years I have been a parent hallway reader. It has been one of my fondest memories to observe the progression of young readers as they struggle with individual words and evolve into more fluent readers. Consider volunteering in your child’s classroom. Upcoming events: Fall Festival. Friday, September 21st. Health Screening, October 8-11th. Have a great school year. And, please feel free to contact me at maduro858@msn.com or (612) 968-2919.

Gift Wrap and More! Gleason Lake’s major fundraiser, the annual Gift Wrap Sale, is ready to begin! Students will receive sales packets on September 13th and selling will continue through October 3th. Our school receives 50% of the overall sales, so in that short time we will fund books for the library, field trips, subscriptions for students to study online, technology enhancements, the Outdoor Learning Center naturalist, and much more! Last year, the fundraiser generated almost $20,000 so we have a great big target to shoot for. Students will be selling a wide variety of heavy- duty gift wrap and accessories, baking mixes, candles, magazine subscriptions and health and beauty products. Orders can be easily placed electronically by visiting www.Innisbrook.com. The sales packets provided to each student contain further instructions as well as the beautiful catalog full of great products. Let’s support this fundraiser and help all the programs that make Gleason Lake a great place for our kids! If you have any questions, please contact Melissa House at 763-473-1354, brmjhouse@comcast.net, or Jill Wine at 763-473-0389, scottwwine@aol.com.
GLEASON LAKE HEALTH SCREENING This year’s Health Screening will take place Monday, October 8th through Thursday, October 11. Most Gleason Lake students will be tested for vision and/or hearing. There is a re-‐screen date scheduled for Tuesday, November 13th for students who were absent during the initial screening, or for those who may require a second screening. This service requires many, many volunteers! Under the guidance and instruction of a Wayzata Public Schools district nurse, parent volunteers will screen the students. This is a fun way to work directly with the kids, and no medical experience is needed! There are sign up sheets in the office, online, and in your Family Packets. You may also email us directly to sign up for a shift. Please contact us with any questions. Jenny Higgins Kris Webert jenniferehiggins@hotmail.com webert_kris@comcast.net
