Building and operating the worlds first

LNG Passenger Ferry – a Review

• In 1996 the Norwegian Parliament decided to build two types of gasoperated

car and passenger ferries; one operating on LNG (Liquefied

Natural Gas) and one on CNG (Compressed Natural Gas).

• The main reasons for this decision;

– The finding of large quantities of gas on the Norwegian section of the

Continental Shelf

– The intention to achieve more experience using gas in general – and in

the transport sector in particular

– The reduction of pollution and green house gases from the transport

sector was also an important element in the decision making

• In 2001 the two ferry operators MRF and Fylkesbaatane merged and

formed the Fjord1-group designated to build the first LNG-ferry. The

CNG project was never started.
