A comparison of the Initial and Recurring System Operating Costs

Anincreasingnumberofpublishedarticleshavecriticisedthedeficienciesofall-airvariableairvolumesystemsinmeetingspaceminimumventilationairquantitiesasdictatedbyANSI/ASHRAEStandard 62.1 – 2016. A tested and proven method of mitigating the deficiencies of theaforementioned systems involves theusageofDedicatedOutdoorAir Systems (DOASs). TheseHVAC units are used to decouple space sensible and latent loads; effectively, the DOASs aredesignedtodelivertherequiredspace-specificoutdoorair(OA)quantitiesatalltimeswhilstalsohandlingOAsensibleand latent loads.Spacesensibleand latent loadsare thentreatedusingaparallelHVACsystem(VRFs,FCUs,etc.). Inpractice,DOASsmayalsobedesignedsothatspacelatentloadsarefullytreated,furtherreducingthedutyrequirementsoftheparallelsystem.Thevirtually unlimited DOAS arrangements, however, have caused confusion in the engineeringcommunity regarding the selectionof units that present themost favourable pay-backperiod.Moreover, the highly climate-dependent performance of DOASs further complicates theequipmentselectionprocessfordesignengineers.Theaimofthispresentationwastoassessthepurchasing and operating costs of six different system configurations in four different cities,namely Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion and Rhodes, by examining the under-lyingthermodynamicprocesses.Thepay-backperiodofeachunitarrangementwasthendeterminedandthesystemswiththeshortestpay-offperiodwereidentified.Anumberofconclusionswerefinally drawn to assist design engineers in developing sustainable and energy-efficient DOASsolutionstailoredtoclientrequirements.
