Fundación El legado andalusí
The legado andalusí is a foundation belonging to the regional Government of Andalusia and with the participation of the Spanish Government. The
honorary president is the king of Spain.
The Foundation also has the backing of the UNESCO, the European Council and the Spanish Agency for
International Co-operation, among others.
The aim of the legacy is to valorise and spread the hispano-muslim cultural heritage concentrating on the
mutual influences of the Mediterranean area throughout the centuries.
Objectives
• Making the Hispano-Muslim civilisation, its art, its monuments, better Known. Acquainting people with its various cultural contributions.
• Spreading the role that Spain and Andalusia have played throughout history as the cultural bridge between the East and the West, along with the Mediterranean and Latin American countries.
• Promoting cultural and rural tourism, traditional arts and crafts and protecting our cultural heritage.
• Improving the perception both worlds have of each other and establish better relationships between them.
• Involving the other countries which play part in this legacy, adding our common past to our “cultural wealth”, in the certainty that this will benefit us all.
Exhibitions
• The foundation has organized more than 60 themed exhibitions that show the splendour of the culture of al-Andalus.
• The exhibitions have been backed by an exhaustive research work, generating a massive media coverage and creating solid cooperation links.
Publications
• The publications are distributed all over the most important points of sale in Spain. They have a relevant presence in the most famous Spanish and international book fairs.
• The Legado Andalusí carries out an important editorial work, having published more than 80 books on themed matters, tourism, monographs, brochures, exhibitions and periodicals, and they have been translated into numerous languages.
Cultural Itineraries • We seek to contribute to cultural
cohesion in the Mediterranean, starting from the concept of Cultural Itineraries.
• They are trans-national routes that disseminate a common heritage and history, and contribute to establish close links between the countries.
Cultural Itinerary of the Almoravids and the
Almohads
Cultural Itinerary of the Umayyads
Cultural Itinerary of Mudejar Art
Pavilion of al-Andalus and the Science
• It’s the final destination of all the Routes.
• It is located inside the Science Park of Granada.
• There are almost 4500 m² dedicated to the Arab scientific legacy and the different contributions made by Andalusi civilization.
• There are Thematic Weekends for the promotion of the more than 200 towns belonging to the Routes, as well as a permanent exhibitions and other activities.
Other Activities The Foundation intends to support all the festivities or events celebrated in the towns along the Routes having a linkage to culture. It can be done in different forms:
• seminars, conferences
• recuperation of old jobs through workshops (tiling, falconry, plasterwork, inlaid work, Arab calligraphy)
• Andalusi music concerts
• travelling exhibitions
• Travels: educational routes for children and circuits articulating Andalusia as the “Live your Legacy” or the “Know your province”
• Marketing throughout international tour-operators (TUI), travel agencies (El Corte Inglés), tourism fairs, and 7 collaboration agreements with companies related with tourism.
• Activities in the Pavilion al-Andalus and Science of Granada: “thematic weekends” for the promotion of the towns of the routes
The legado andalusí proposes to strengthen the inland tourism offer through the creation of a major itinerary in order to promote development in those areas far from regular tourist circuits. The routes give a major boost to cultural and rural tourism, traditional arts and the preservation and protection of monumental and artistic heritage.
It was Major Cultural Itinerary of the Council of Europe in 2004
Cultural Routes
• Route of the Caliphate • Route of Washington Irving • Route of the Nasrids • Route of Almoravids and Almohads
• Route of the Alpujarras • Route of Ibn al-Jatib • Route of al-Idrisi • Route of al-Mutamid
Route of the Caliphate
• This route connects Granada with Córdoba, the capital of the most important Muslim empire of al-Andalus.
• The caliphate of Cordoba (939-1031) was proclaimed by Abderraman III, who impulses the culture during his kingdom.
• The caliphate´s era was the period of maximum glory of al-Andalus in terms of politics, trade and culture.
• This route was used for commercial, artistic, and scientific exchanges.
Route of Washington Irving • This route goes from
Seville to Granade, through Malaga, reviewing the steps followed by the American writer, Washington Irving, in 1829.
• The most famous Irving novel, The Alhambra Tales, collects some hispano-muslim legends and the experiences of the writer during his trip and his stay in the Alhambra.
• In the late Middle Ages, this route communicated the Christian south of Spain and the Nasrid Kingdom of Granade. That’s why its border fortresses and castles stand out.
Route of the Nasrids • This route recalls the Nasrid Kingdom of
Granada (1238-1492), the last bastion of Muslim power in Spain.
• It begins in Navas de Tolosa, where the Christians (1212) beat the Muslims, whose power were divided into the Taifas Kingdoms, one of which, the Nasrid Kingdom of Granade, was created by a powerful local leader, Alhamar.
• Because these were border lands during the 13th and 14th centuries, plenty castles and watchtowers were built.
• This itinerary includes also ancient remains as the prehistoric caves of Píñar.
Route of Almoravids and Almohads
• This route is inspired in the Almoravids and Almohads, two dynasties of Berber origin (Sahara) who achieve to forge a huge empire reaching from the south of Spain to the north of Africa between the 11th and 12th centuries.
• It has two branches that join in Ronda and then go to Granada through the itinerary followed by the traveller of 14th c., Ibn Battuta, who made a long journey from Tanger to China.
Cádiz
Tarifa
Route of al-Idrisi
Almuñecar Salobreña
This route is inspired in the geographer of 12th c., al-Idrisi, who creates a famous world map and made plenty geographical descriptions of the al-Andalus of his century.
This itinerary goes from Malaga to Granade through the seaside towns and the Lecrin Valley.
The nature has a leading role in this route: there are forest of yew trees, almond trees and wetlands. But the most characteristic are the tropical fruits as avocado or sugar cane, that grow due to the subtropical weather.
Route of al-Mutamid It starts in Lisbon and goes to Seville through two branches; from there, it arrives to Granada by the Route of Washington Irving.
This itinerary holds the southwest of the Iberian peninsula: Portugal and Spain, two countries that in ancient times were part of the same territory governed by al-Mutamid, the king of the Taifa of Seville in the second half of 11th century.
The southern branch goes through Silves, where al-Mutamid, as a teenager, discovered love, poetry and music.
In this route we can perceived the historical continuity between the towns of Alentejo and Algarve and Western Andalusia.
