FROMTHEPRESIDENTAmyHardisonTully“I'mlookingforwardtothefuture,andfeelinggratefulforthepast.”--MikeRoweDearSCFSMembers,Ithinkwinterisover.AndwhileIhaveneverexperienced

polleninFebruary,itisherenonetheless.Althoughspringhasarrivedearlierthanever,wearetheluckyonesinthisscenariosincethispeskypollenwillbringflowers,greengrassandwarm(er)weather.Thespringseasonoftenconjuresthenotionofnewbeginnings,notjustwithnature,butoftenwithinourselvestoo.WhenIthinkthenewbeginningsthatspringbrings,Ioftenthinkofgrowth–notjustgrowthinnature,butalsopersonalgrowth.Noneofuswouldbewherewearenowwithoutpersonalgrowthandexperiencesfromourpast.Thelongpracticesessions,recitals,lessons,andmasterclassesofourpastandmakeforgreatmusicalexperiencesinourfuture.

TheSouthCarolinaFluteSocietycelebratesits10thAnniversarythisyear.EveryYearsince2007wehavehonoredtheartistryofourfavoriteinstrumentbyfeaturingguestartists,recitals,competitions,workshopsandmore.Overthepast10yearswehavehostedexceptionalguestartistslikeBradleyGarner,TadeuCoelho,BrooksdeWetter-Smith,CarlHall,NicolasDuchamp,ChristinaSmith,RhondaLarson,JeanneBaxtresser,BonitaBoyd,PaulaRobison,andJillFelber.WewilladdMarkSparkstothisdistinguishedlistastheguestartistofour10thAnniversaryfestival.

YouwillreadinthisissueabouttheoriginsoftheSouthCarolinaFluteSociety.ThankyoutoAmandaBarrettandWendyCohenfortheirvisiontobringaflute-centeredorganizationtoourstate,whichhasprovedtobenefitthestudents,teachers,andcommunityflutistsinSouthCarolina.Theyworkeddiligentlyto

Looking Back and Planning Ahead Tocelebrateour10thanniversaryseason,weaskedtwoofSouthCarolinaFluteSociety’sfoundingboardmembers,AmandaBarrettandWendyCohen,tosharesomeoftheirmemoriesaboutthefoundingofSCFS.Howwastheideaforthesocietyborn?

Amanda:Ihadtriedtoorganizelocalflutists,andwehadmetacoupleoftimestoreadensemblemusic…withtheideathatotherflutistsinothercitiescoulddothesameandwecouldcometogetheryearly,butIwasn’tabletogetanythinggoingoutsideofGreenvilleduringthatyear.Aboutayearlater,Wendycalledmewithherdesiretostartasociety.Wendy:IwantedtocreateasourceforSCflutiststocometogetherandlearnfromeachother.TheyearthatitstartedIwasinterimfluteprofessoratUniversityofSouthCarolina,whichwasagreatcentrallocationforustocometogetherforafestival.IwantedtheretobemoreattentionforSouthCarolinaintheflutecommunityandalsotoshowSCflutistswhatis“outthere”beyondtheirownstate,sothatstudentswouldbeawareofthedifferentplayinglevelsandhavetheopportunityforguestartiststocomeandteachmasterclasses.

Whowasinvolved?

A&W:Initiallyjustthetwoofus.WecontactedalawyerwhowasafriendofWendy’sandanaccountantwhowasafriendofAmanda’s.Oncetheattorneysetuptheby-laws,weknewthatweneededofficersandaboardofdirectorstobecompliantwith501cregulations.Theattorneyadvisedthatweneededanoddnumberofboardmembersforvotingpurposes.Webrainstormedwhomtoask.(Boardofdirectorsthefirstyearincluded:Wendyaspresident,AmandaasVP,EstherWaiteassecretary,RobinPughDohertyastreasurer,andfivemembers-at-large.)

WhatisthemissionofSCFS?

A&W:Tofurthertheeducationofflutists,createperformanceopportunities,andpromotetheloveofmusicandtheflute.

Whatweresomeofthechallengesfacedinitscreation?

A&W:MONEY.Notknowingifwecouldpaytheguestartists,thelawyer,theaccountant…W:Gettingcorporatesponsors.AmandaandIwalkedaroundtheexhibithallattheNFAconventioninAlbuquerqueintroducingournewsocietyandaskingvendorsiftheywouldbeinterestedinsponsoringourinfantsociety.Anotherchallengewas,andstillis,gettingtogetherformeetingssincewearespreadoutoverawholestate.WetriedmeetingsinColumbia,conferencecalls…A:…alsoameetinginGreenvilleduringtheweekendofaGSOconcertwhenamajorityofboardmemberswouldbepresent.WetriedtomeetindowntownGreenvilleandconnectwiththerestoftheboardbyconferencecall,butitwassoloudthatnobodycouldhearanything!

FluteComm is a community gathering of flutists open to any and every flutist who wants to participate. Register for the FluteComm Ensemble, perform with your own flute ensemble, or just attend the final concert. For those who register for the FluteComm Ensemble, we will spend the day rehearsing, learning, and getting to know one another. The day's hard work and friendship will be showcased on the final concert. The registration fee includes full ensemble rehearsals, section rehearsals, lunch, an interactive warm-up styled after Bobby McFerrin’s “Circle Songs,” and a 90 minute Alexander Technique session with certified teacher and fellow musician, Petrea Warneck. $35 Registration for the FluteComm Ensemble $5 per member of a pre-formed ensemble to perform only on the final concert Full a full schedule, registration forms, and more details visit www.laurenwatkinsflute.com and select the “FluteComm” tab.

A:AfallfestivalheldatBobJonesUniversity.TheBJUwindbandhadalreadybookedTadeuCoelhotobeaguestsoloistwiththeband,sowepiggy-backedourfestivalthenextday.

Werethereanymemorablemomentswithguestartists?

W:BradGarnerperformingwiththestudentsatthefirstclosingrecital.They’vereallyallbeenoutstanding.

HowhasSCFSgrownandchangedsinceitsfounding?

W:It’sprettysimilartowhatitwasinthebeginning.Wedidn’thaveasmanycompetitions,andwedidn’tinvolvestudentsfromotherstates.Nowwedo,andwehavemanymorecompetitors.Wehavemorerecognitionintheflutecommunity,whichisoneofthethingsIwantedtoaccomplish.A:Wehaveincreasedthesizeoftheboardsothatmorepeoplecouldbeinvolved—wesometimeshavegraduatestudentsserveasboardmembers.

HowhasSCFSbuiltasenseofcommunityforSCflutistsandstudents?

W:It’sbeengreatforsomeoftheteacherstoworktogetherandshareteachingmethodsandideas.It’sgivenmanyperformersintheareaanopportunitytoknoweachotherbetter,too.A:It’salsogiventhepre-collegestudentsmoreopportunitiestoreconnectwithotherflutiststheymeetatregionandall-stateband.Thecollegiatestudentshavealsobeenabletonetworkand“comparenotes”aboutcollegeexperiences.

HowdoesSCFSenrichstudents'aspirations?

W:Itgivesaspiringperformerstheopportunitytoperforminfrontofeachother,anditgivesaspiringteachersachancetoobservegreatartiststeach.

WhatareyourhopesforSCFSinthefuture?

W&A:Thatitwillcontinuetothriveandtohelpstudentsandteachersconnectwitheachotherandencourageeachother.

WhatplansarethereforthegrowthofSCFS?

A:Wehopetohaveongoingsponsorshipsforourvariouscompetitionsandtoencouragemorestudentstoparticipate.Iwouldliketoseemoreadultamateursbecomeinvolved.W:Hopefullythemembershipwillcontinuetogrowandthattheboardwillhavenewideasformarketingandenlargingouroutreach.

WhatarewaysthatmemberscancontributetothemissionofSCFS?
