Dear Members,
Greetings!
I am happy to share my
thoughts with you through
this combined 18th-19th edi-
tion of STAI e-Newsletter. 18th
edition was not released in
time due to nationwide lock-
down. In the past three
months, we are passing
through an unprecedented
situation that brought the
world to collectively combat
the spread of a pandemic, put-
ting economies on hold and
changing everyday life & work
for their communities.
The sugar season 2019-20 is
almost at fag end and the
sugar production is likely to be
27 MT against consumption of
24 MT. With exports of 5 MT,
the opening stock with the
industry would be 12.5 MT as
on 1st Oct 2020 against 14.5
MT as on 1st Oct 2019 which
would be good enough to meet
6 months of the country’s con-sumption.
Going forward for sustainability and
profitability, the industry should
ponder upon emulating Brazilian
formula of having flexible factories
wherein they easily switch between
sugar/ethanol production depend-
ing on the price premium of one
over another. The Govt. on its part
to encourage industry, has allowed
production of ethanol from all the
sources of sugar and even vide its
notification dt. 13th May 2020 ad-
vised sugar mills to augment their
ethanol production capacities.
STAI organized two All India semi-
nars, one each in the month of Jan
& Feb 2020. After the relaxation in
lockdown, as a new initiative, STAI
for the first time successfully orga-
nized two Webinar Sessions viz.,
1)Air Pollution Control in Sugar
Mills and Distilleries in May 2020
2)Bio-fuels & By-products in June
2020. Highlights of the seminars
and webinars are given in subse-
quent pages of this e-newsletter.
STAI Council is drawing future
course of activities for the Associa-
tion and we are also awaiting for the
govt guidelines for holding large
gathering events. Accordingly we
shall be communicating the venue
& dates for the Annual Conven-
tion in due course of time, keep-
ing in view the safety, wellbeing of
members and other stakeholders.
Please stay safe by taking neces-
sary precautions, maintain social
distance for the safety of your
near and dear ones.
With regards,
SANJAY AWASTHI

All India One Day Seminar on “Bio-
Enzymes/other Technologies for
Condensate Treatment and Recy-
cling in a Distillery” was organized
by The Sugar Technologists’ Associ-ation of India (STAI) in association
with Shreenath Mhaskoba Sakhar
Karkhana on 22nd January 2020 at
SMSKL Sugar Factory, Shreenath
Nagar, Pune.
The seminar was followed by
delegates visit to SMSKL, Distillery
and Demo R & D 2G Ethanol Plant.
The seminar was organized to
create awareness regarding Water
Conservation in Molasses based
Distilleries which has assumed
great significance in today’s context for distilleries to take up treatment
processes for achieving zero fresh
water usage.
The seminar was attended by over
150 delegates from across the
country.
Following dignitaries graced the
occasion and addressed the dele-
gates during the Inaugural Session:
Chief Guest-Mr P A Raut, Chair-
man, Shreenath Mhaskoba Sakhar
Karkhana

Mr D.M. Raskar, Council Member,
STAI and CEO Shreenath Mhasko-
ba Sakhar Karkhana
Speaking on the occasion Mr Sanjay
Awasthi said that the game changer
for the Indian Sugar Industry has
been the Govt of India’s new Bio-Fuel
Policy – 2018 which allows produc-
tion of ethanol through B heavy
molasses as well as with the direct
sugarcane syrup for blending with
petrol. In near future this will not
only make the industry sustainable
but can also be an import substitute
to crude oil.
With the above new plants for
ethanol production will be estab-
lished and for the same industry
needs to focus on adoption of
modern technologies to adhere to the
stringent guidelines of the Govern-
ment of India of Zero Liquid Dis-
charge.
Mr P A Raut, Chairman, Shreenath
Mhaskoba Sakhar Karkhana , Chief
Guest in his address shared the
modernization journey of SMSKL
Plant from 1250 TCD plant estab-
lished in 2004-05 to a modern
present day 4500 TCD Sugar
Factory and attached 10 MW Power
Plant ,45 KLPD distillery and 3
KLPD R & D 2 G Ethanol plant.
He added further, “With the faith of Sugarcane Growers surrounding the
factory area and through the
dedicated team of technocrats the
factory has implemented modern
technologies and also running
various R & D Programmes for
achieving higher efficiency and
profitability”
STAI Publication “Year Book and
Technical Data Directory of
Indian Sugar Factories for the
year 2017-18 and 2018-19” was also released during the occasion.

quality sugarcane to the factory.
Mr Murugesh R Nirani, Chief
Guest, said that “Sugar Industry’s Scenario now a days is changing
very rapidly, power co-generation
from sugar factories which was
considered a profitable venture few
years back has now been taken over
by Ethanol Production. Also sugar
factories need to shift their focus,
understand the market conditions
and gradually changing manufac-
turing process from Double Sul-
phitation to refined sugar. Through
this the factories not only be able to
meet increasing internal demand for
the refined sugar but calibrate our
position as a credible exporter of
sweetner on sustained basis.
Mr P K Belsare, Vice President,
STAI proposed a Vote of Thanks and
thanked all the delegates, speakers
and sponsors for their active
participation in the seminar.

STAI Webinar on “Revenue Generating Modern Technologies for Air Pollution Control in Sugar Mills & Distilleries”
Page 7
The Sugar Technologists’ Associa-tion of India in association with
M/s Enviropol Engineers organized
Webinar Session on “Revenue
Generating Modern Technologies
for Air Pollution Control in Sugar
Mills & Distilleries” held on 29 May
2020.
With the emission norms getting
more stringent, the capital expendi-
ture on Air Pollution Control Device
(APCD) is increasing for Sugar
Factories. In this scenario of profit
erosion urgent need of technology
integration is required, wherein
meeting environment norms be-
comes a revenue generating model
and not a burden.
Mr Sanjay Awasthi, President, STAI
in his welcome address said that
“Despite the importance of bagasse
drying in recent years, it has not
been sufficiently discussed. The
bagasse dryer as we all know, like
the pre-heater and economizer,
increases the steam generation
efficiency but it only becomes a
significant influence when flue gas is
used as the heat source for drying. It
also helps in reducing air pollution
and air demand in the furnace.”

The Sugar Technologists’ Associa-tion of India organized webinar
session on “Improving Sustainability of Sugar Industry through Biofuels and
By Products” held on 16 June 2020.
As it is evident that Sugarcane, a high
biomass crop is a treasure house of bio
based products for food/fuel/feed/
fibre/fodder, chemicals, bioplastics,
pharmaceuticals etc. Governments
around the globe are also interested in
production of alternative bio-fuel & by
products from sugar industry due to
growing concerns over energy security
and brought on by diminishing fossil
fuel reserves and instability in their
prices.
Speaking on the occasion Mr Sanjay
Awasthi, President, STAI said that
“The biggest problem of sugar industry is how to achieve sustainability. With
excess production of sugar in last 3-4
years, the industry is not able to
generate profits from its operations.” He added further “The only solution for the sugar industry to come out of
crisis is to focus on production of bio-
fuels and by products”.
