What is the smallest object in the universe
An atom is the smallest object in the universe
Everything is made up of atoms
Can I compare an atom to anything that I’ll understand
You can compare an atom to a brick – the tiniest piece
of a building

Why do you need to learn about atoms
Atoms determine everything about an object, except its
form
How big is an atom
If you place 10,000,000 atoms in a line next to each
other, they would measure less than this line:
Atoms are much too small to be seen with a standard
microscope

An atom is made up of electrically charged particles
that hold it together
What are the tiny particles in an atom
Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons
Is there a difference between these particles
The nucleus (center) of the atom is made up of positively
charged protons and neutrally charged neutrons (no
charge)

How does the electrical charge effect the atom
If you place two magnets end to end they will move
apart or snap together
If the magnets snapped together, you placed two ends
with opposite poles together
In what way is this like an atom
The positively charged protons hold the atom together
by attracting negatively charged electrons that are
rotating around the nucleus

Write the correct verb form for each sentence after the letter.
Simple machines (help or helps) you to accomplish
work.
Levers (is or are) simple machines.
A lever (is or are) a bar that (turn or turns) around a
stationary point (calling or called) a fulcrum.
To move an object with a lever, you (has or have) to
overcome the force (calls or called) a load.
You (lift or lifts) a load with your effort.

Refer to the page on Subject-Verb Agreement (pages 83)
Directions:
Write the letter that corresponds to each sentence below on a piece of paper.
Write the correct verb form for each sentence after the letter.
There (is or are) three types of levers.
In a class one lever, the fulcrum (lie or lies) between
the load and the effort.
In a class two lever, the load (is or are) placed between
the fulcrum and the effort.
A class three lever (have or has) the effort in between
the fulcrum and the load.
Longer levers (work or works) better than shorter
levers because this simple machine (are or is) much
easier to use if the effort is farther from the fulcrum.

Turning forces (allow or allows) something to rotate
around a fixed point, or a fulcrum.
The turning force (is or are) (know or known) as a
moment.
Hinges on a box (pivot or pivots) around a fulcrum.
The farther you (is or are) from the fixed point, the
less effort you will (need or needs) to exert.
You can loosen a bolt much more easily with a long-
handled wrench than you (is or are) able to with a
short-handled wrench.

changes) the speed of complex machines.
Many complex machines (is or are) made up of simple
machines.
Scissors (has or have) extremely sharp wedges for
blades that force the surface of an object apart.
A pair of scissors (is or are) a class one lever with the
fulcrum between the effort and the load.

Green plants are multicellular plants that use carbon
dioxide, water and energy from the sun. These
substances allow them to turn minerals and nutrients
into food for growth, maintenance, and reproduction.
Only plants are able to capture the Sun’s energy
directly. The Sun cannot give you energy without the
help of plants.
Even though our bodies are warmed by the Sun that
does not produce enough energy for us to meet our
needs.
You need to eat food to obtain the necessary energy for
life processes. Green plants are essential for you and
your well-being.
Photosynthesis is a process by which plants provide
energy for almost all life. This process is extremely
important for you and me.

List object pronouns in each sentence after each letter.
Photosynthesis is possible because plants contain a
substance call chlorophyll. Chlorophyll helps them
capture the sun’s energy.
Chlorophyll uses the Sun’s energy. Chlorophyll uses it
to build carbohydrates from minerals, carbon dioxide,
and water.
Chemical energy is produced during photosynthesis.
Water and carbon dioxide use it to create sugar and
oxygen.
Carbon dioxide enters plants from the atmosphere.
Tiny holes (stomata) allow it to enter the leaves.
Leaves release oxygen into the air in the form of a gas.
Oxygen is then available for you and me.

The required water and minerals for photosynthesis
enters plants in two ways. Both the roots and the leaves
absorb it.
If you were looking at the plant down through the stem,
you would see water entering the plant from the roots
as well as the leaves. The stem channels the water up
towards you and the leaves.
The basic sugars that plants make during this process
are known as carbohydrates. Plants use some of them
for their own needs.
A biochemist, named Melvin Calvin, studied the
process by which plants take in carbon dioxide from
the atmosphere to make organic compounds. The
Calvin Cycle was named after him.
Environmental factors are important during
photosynthesis. The intensity of light, temperature,
and concentration of carbon dioxide affect it greatly.

Plants absorb water and mineral nutrients from the soil.
Their roots also allow them to store sugar and starches.
The potato plant stores carbohydrates in its
underground tubers. When you eat one of them, you
are eating its underground tubers.
Humans depend on extra nutrients provided by plants.
They contain carbohydrates, fats, and protein in them.
Plants also require other ingredients for their
sustenance. There are at least 13 mineral nutrients that
supply them with the requirements for growth,
maintenance, and reproduction.
A young student could eat the roots, stems, leaves,
flowers, fruits, and seeds from a multitude of plants to
obtain minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron to
nourish him or her and provide the necessary energy
for all life’s processes.
