Kia ora tatou
Over the past three years Donna
Bainbridge has brought a variety of
new and very meaningful service-
learning opportunities to the upper
years of the lower school. These
include working with disabled students at a local garden,
supporting the Auckland City Mission and regular interactive
visits to Mercy Parklands. These rich learning opportunities
have become a significant part of the journey for Michael Park
students
The 2019 Minister of Health Volunteer Awards were presented
on 17 June, during National Volunteer Week, at Grand Hall
Parliament. These awards are given out once a year and there is
only one winner nationally for each category.
This year our class 5 won the Youth Health Volunteer Team
Award for their reading buddies program at Mercy Parklands.
Two students form the class, Rohan Rakim and Catlin Buchanan
-Johns flew down to Wellington on Monday with Mrs
Bainbridge to receive the award on behalf of their classmates
and the school. Next week we will include a full report of their
visit.
Two other things that have been in the news recently also
relate to our school. The first being that teachers this week
voted on the amended pay and conditions offer from the
government. You may have seen that this includes aligning the
timing of the area school collective with that of primary and
secondary schools. This will have no noticeable impact on our
school but will mean less confusion in the future with all parts
of the pre-tertiary sector renegotiating at the same time. The
second relates to donations and the option for schools from
decile 1-7 to opt into a government payment scheme rather
than collecting donations. As a decile 8 school Michael Park falls
outside the boundaries of the offer to consider this option.
Finally, today we celebrated Matariki with a dawn blessing and
breakfast organised by Whaea Andrea, the Kapa Haka group,
our Maori lead team and the community. Next week will see
our school engaged in a week of Matariki celebrations
culminating in the Matariki festival on 28th June. Today we also
marked the shortest day with our Spiral festival. This year we
had one large spiral in the eurythmy room, junior and senior
classes were paired to walk the spiral together during the day.
It was a very peaceful, joyous and reverent celebration as we
begin to move towards the longer days and the light that will
follow.
Ngā mihi
Terry Storer
Principal
The spiral festival brings the meaning of light to the world in a
way that is not intellectual but could be directly and inwardly
experienced.
All classes from 1 to 12 take part in this festival with a younger
class being paired with an older one.

Thursday 27 June at 9.00am. They are seeing allocated children
in the lower and middle school, some for vision and some for
both hearing and vision.

RSST AGM
The Annual General Meeting of the RSST will be held on
Tuesday 25th June at 6pm in the school staff room.
FAIR COMMITTEE MEETING
The class fair coordinators will meet Wednesday 26th June at
7pm in the staff room. If the class fair coordinator can't attend
then at least 1 representative from that class must attend.
As we know, Christine Fairclough, who very ably led the fair
committee for the past few years, has moved on and there are
some areas of the fair that we all need to work through
together.
MPS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TEAM
On Tuesday the 18th of June, the high school basketball team
played against St Peters School at Dilworth College. MPS played
an amazing game with both great defense and exceptional
offense, and got the victory by twenty points. Everyone played
very well and worked together as a team to get a great result.
Final score being 58 to MPS and 38 to St Peters. I feel proud to
be part of a team that shows great skills and sportsmanship.
Well done Boys!

LUMINO THE DENTISTS - HIGH SCHOOL
ADOLESCENT DENTAL VAN IS COMING TO MICHAEL PARK
SCHOOL FROM 22-23 JULY
OPTIONAL ORAL HEALTH TREATMENT
Lumino The Dentists know how important good oral health is to
your child’s overall health and happiness.
We will be setting up one of our mobile dental units outside the
gym toilets, and will provide each student with a dental
examination, including dental health and care advice, x-rays (if
required), treatment (if required) and a personal Smile Report.
Where treatment cannot be completed, your child will be
referred to a Lumino The Dentists practice. If your child requires
orthodontic treatment, we will advise you to contact your
family dentist or orthodontist specialist.
Enrolling your children to see Lumino The Dentists is an ideal
opportunity to give them preventative dental care easily and
conveniently. Lumino The Dentists School Smiles Programme is
fully funded by the Ministry of Health and is an effective model
for delivering quality dental care to New Zealand’s secondary
school students.
If you would like your child to be part of the Lumino The
Dentists School Smiles Programme, you can enrol your child
when they arrive. If your child is already enrolled, there is no
need to re-enrol each year unless there has been a change of
address or change in medical history. Parental consent is
needed for all students under the age of 16 years.
You can learn more about the Lumino The Dentists School
Smiles Programme by visiting www.lumino.co.nz

MPS has had a long tradition of parents making wonderful wooden treasures to sell
at the Summer Fair.
This year the woodwork group hasn’t been operating due to dwindling numbers
and no current co-ordinator.
The co-ordinator’s role is mainly to be a central contact person and to hold the key to open
and lock up the woodwork room at each session. This task could be shared by more
than one person.
Sessions are usually on a weekday evening for a
couple of hours. If you’re keen to help get the group
and running again, you could pick whatever time suits you!
If you’re interested in joining the woodwork group or potentially helping to coordinate it,
please contact Dana in the school office

Refugee Resettlement Centre
On Monday we took 12 of our high school students to meet our
newest citizens at the Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre at
the AUT school on site. The students are there for six weeks
before they go to their new homes around NZ. We met teens
from Syria, Afghanistan, Congo, Colombia, Somalia and
Myanmar. We played handball, basketball, made Matariki flax
stars and shared kai together, plus some singing together. It was
a wonderful afternoon for all involved. Thank you to Mrs Hooker
for organising the flax weaving and Mrs Feenstra for helping. We
are hoping to host students back at MPS for an afternoon next
term.
We received this from AUT:
“Thank you so much for coming out on Monday afternoon. I
know it is a lot of work to organise such an outing and I so
appreciate you taking the time to visit us.
My students had an amazing time with your students and were
so surprised by how friendly and kind your students were. I am
consistently impressed by the Steiner students and how mature
and open-minded they are.
Thank you once again for all the lovely food, supplying the flax
and handballs, and just for being so welcoming and generous.“
After School Programme at the Resettlement Centre
Some of our High School students have been going to the centre
every week to help with the after school programme from 3 till
5pm. We are really grateful to see our students giving back in
this way. Thank you Dasha, Lana, Ruby and Hannah for your
commitment and support. Please see Cathy if you are interested
in this programme.
Thank you again
Cathy, for the Gift of Hope Charity Team
40 Hour Famine
We have more students that have completed the Famine and
we have heard some fabulous ways students have fundraised ,
from not using furniture to picking up 40 bags of rubbish,
baking, no talking, living out of a back pack - all for 40 hours.
Logan Lands rode his bike for 40 kilometres on the weekend -
great way to raise awareness and funds. Go Logan!
Thank you to those who have supported students and donated
to our page. There is still time - go to https://
my.worldvision.org.nz/ss/um6KH4/michael-park-school
If you have done the Famine make sure you collect your
donations and either pay it in online or bring cash into school.
Either way, return your book by 3rd July as we need them back
so we can award the winning class the movie of their choice!

returned, most interesting idea and toughest challenge. Please

the lives of the children of South Sudan.”

CLASS 8 - What is it like to be on Class 8 Play.
What, if anything, have you gained from it?
“I really believe this has massive value for all of us. I can see
already how the class has changed and I think for some people
it will honestly be life-changing.”
“This has made me see the class differently. Some people can
focus a lot more than I thought and some people can speak a
lot better than I thought. I didn’t know I could have so much
power when I speak.”
“I have felt VERY motivated for this play to be amazing and feel
like I want the class to be seen differently”
“I love how we can express ourselves without much judgement
and how it brings out a side of my friends and classmates that I
haven’t seen before. I was extremely nervous about this all
term, but it’s great.”
“What I have loved about being on play, is the feeling of letting
yourself go. The space that you work in is very free and open,
which means that it feels nice to be in an environment that you
can move around in and feel free.”
“I enjoyed first of all that I like drama because I didn’t think I
would really like that much. I also enjoyed the challenges of just
getting a task and having to finish it with your own will power
instead of being babied through everything “
“I have got so much out of this, I can’t put it into words.-It is a
feeling of being really alive.
“I think this has helped me to be a better speaker and has
taught me how to push out of my comfort zone. I’m a whole lot
more confident in my speaking, less scared to put myself out
there. “
“I think play is very valuable because it is a massive growth
experience for an individual, but also as a class. It teaches you
learn lots of life lessons as well. “
“I have loved the chance to try something that I’ve never done
before. It has been very eye opening about our classes good
qualities and our faults. I like that my strengths and weaknesses
have become clearer.
“It helped me be able to concentrate more and focused, but
also enjoy myself and let myself be more open to speaking out
loud.”
“I feel like drama has helped me able concentrate and be more
focused and not talk when we have to, it also made me able to
be more open and speak out loud. “
“I have loved doing drama because I’ve come out of my shell
and I like hanging out with my class mates.”
“It has gained a lot of confidence in myself and I’m not always
putting myself down as much and thinking I’ve done a bad job”
“I would want my child/another child to do this it really brings
out the best in people, you’ve got the best drama teacher in the
world (being honest), the class creates a bond that that I doubt
any other class at any other school has.”
“Just doing it is the best for me because I am in a major play –
the play, the lights, the movement and most importantly your
training has transformed me mentally and physically.”
“I never knew the class was so good at drama it was like
everyone had hid this from everyone, a hidden ability everyone
had but never showed it.”
“I think that I have changed as a person. Realising that
everything’s not just about me and the true qualities/talents of
my class mates.”
“It has built up my confidence
in everything. Speaking and my
self-esteem. It’s helped me
realise my classes strengths and
weaknesses.”
“I am in heaven doing the play-
it is so fun!”
“Going on a play as a class is
definitely important, you learn
so much about yourself and
each other. You might find that
you have a newfound love for
drama and it’s equally fun and
(Continued from page 6)
challenging.”
“I have seen many people step up so much that I thought would
not and everyone has an awesome persona I always knew they
would be great just not how much. I have also seen myself a bit
differently and think this has already started to change me.”
“I enjoy the freedom and creativeness that we get. “
“I think that play is a great thing for students our age to
because it forces your class to work together and get over silly
little things. Also it can help shy people out of their shell. It
brings everyone closer together, which is what we need to go
into High School.”
“The play is important because we are growing up and it can
help us see things and extend our experience. ?
“I love that we are given lots of opportunity to being our own
ideas.”
“Doing a play is fun because you get to present something that
you worked on!”
“I am loving every single thing about this play .I t is fun,
challenging and exciting.”
“I have loved being able to push myself to levels that I have
never been able to before along with my class to achieve
something that will stick with us a whole life ..Mostly
discovering that I can achieve things that I never would have
thought I could do.”
We meet in the handwork room from 9am—2pm (coming in later and leaving earlier is ok).
