Edward Norton Stars in PSA for Antarctic ProtectionEdward Norton fans have had a lot to talk about over the past few
weeks. The star, who has been largely absent from the big screen since
2010’s “Stone”, appeared in several segments during last Sunday’s
Academy Awards and has now filmed a PSA in support of the Antarctic
Ocean Alliance.
The coalition has started an online petition to advocate for the creation
of the largest no-take marine reserve on the planet. The reserve would
be established on and around the Antarctic continent and would man-
date that international government policies prevent human interference
with the area’s habitats and wildlife. Specifically, fishing and industrial
activity in the surrounding oceans would be banned.
According to the PSA, the Antarctic Ocean has become especially at-
tractive to industrial fishers because the waters are relatively untouched
and so are home to large quantities of fish that no longer exist in more
populated areas.
As the UN Biodiversity Ambassador, Norton brings quite a bit of noto-
riety and authority to the initiative. In the PSA, the actor urges fans to
join the cause saying, “Everything that our lives and are civilations are
built on rely on healthy ecosystems in the planet.”
Given the fact that there is an upcoming international gathering of
25 nations, which will decide the fate of Antarctica’s Oceans, Norton
expresses how urgent it is for people to act now.
“You can send a clear signal,” he says, “that millions and millions of
people are watching this process, don’t let us down. I’m going to be
watching, join the watch.”
The “Fight Club” star isn’t the only celeb to have added his name to
the petition, Richard Branson, Charmain of Virgin Group and famous
oceanographer Sylvia Earle are both on board. The campaign also part-
ners with many other environmental advocacy groups including Oceana,
Greenpeace, and the World Wildlife Fund.

Sports Going GreenJeremy Lin Proves He’s Got Heart on the Court and OffIt hasn’t even been a month since Jeremy Lin captivated audiences with his dazzling moves on the court, but
we can already say, we’re happy the Harvard grad has made it to the big time. (And not just because I’m a
New Yorker.)
Lin has proven that he’s worthy of all the attention by playing like an all-star and, perhaps more importantly,
giving back to others. According to Huffington Post, he autographed his game winning jersey that he wore
against Kobe Bryant so that money could be raised for the Garden of
Dreams Foundation. With the jersey, a meet and greet and game tickets,
the point guard helped raise $42,388 for the organization which works
to bring joy and once in a lifetime experiences to children facing obsta-
cles. The money could benefit kids experiencing homelessness, illness,
a loss of a parent or any other number difficulties.
And that was his second donation to the organization. The man has
been famous for less than a month! Between the games, the press, and
wrapping his head around his newfound celebrity, it’s nice to know the
budding star is looking out for others.

Green MusicIncredible Lion Photos Taken With High-Tech Remote Control CameraPhotography is a high-tech industry, especially when photographers try
to figure out ways to get closer to dangerous animals without putting
themselves in harm’s way. Conservation photographer Will Burrard-
Lucas has created a high-tech solution that has helped get him amazing
images that would otherwise be impossible -- such as lions feasting or
Komodo dragons flicking their tongues at the lens. Most recently Bur-
rard-Lucas has made modifications to their “BeetleCam” that provide
photographers with even more flexibility for getting images, and these
incredible photos of lions show off what is possible.
Brothers Will and Matt devised the BeetleCam in 2009 in order to get
close-up photos of African wildlife. It is essentially a remote-controlled
car with a DSLR mounted to the top. But after an unfortunate encounter
with a lion, it was clear the BeetleCam needed to be armored up so the
brothers added some armor and made a few design tweaks to come up
with the current model.
Thousands Tell Amazon to Ban Sales of Dolphin and Whale MeatRecently, the news broke that a site owned by Amazon.com, Amazon.jp in Japan, was illegally selling whale meat. The
massive public outrage in response caused Amazon to remove the items from their site.
Many animal advocates and conservationists are telling Amazon that they haven’t gotten far enough yet, though. A
Change.org petition has been started demanding that the company establishes a policy permanently banning the sale of
dolphin and whale meat. Melissa Sehgal is currently in Japan as a Cove Guardian documenting the slaughter of dolphins in
Taiji as well as their capture for captivity. She started the petition that has gathered over 123,000 signatures from around
the world.
“Quietly pulling those products from their site is not enough. It’s time for
Amazon.com to put a permanent ban on whale, dolphin, and porpoise meat in
place. I know that not everyone can come to Japan to join me to speak out for
dolphins and whales, but together we can convince Amazon to permanently
stop selling all whale, dolphin, and porpoise products. If Amazon–the largest
online retailer in the world–were to adopt a policy like this, it would send a clear
message to the world,” Sehgal adds.
Amazon has yet to respond, but over 100,000 people and bad press around the
globe are hard to ignore.
Miley Cyrus and More Team Up for Sean Penn’s Haiti PSA VideoSean Penn was honored earlier this year for his humanitarian efforts in
Haiti. Now, he will be in a star-studded PSA created by his J/P Haitian
Relief Organization (J/P HRO).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the video directed by actress
Soleil Moon Frye stars Miley Cyrus, Zooey Deschanel, Edward Norton,
Pras, Sarah Silverman, LL Cool J, and Eric Dane. Cyrus has also
appeared in an auction video for J/P HRO, in which she takes a picture
of herself and signs it as an auction item. Another video stars Rainn
Wilson who has a script signed by the cast of The Office. Wilson jokes,
“This little gem — hello — a cast-signed Office script worth billions.
So much better than Edward Norton’s signed Illusionist DVD. Who even
understood that movie?”

VehiclesVolt Problems Could Hurt Obama’s Electric-Car PlanGeneral Motors’ announcement Friday that it would
halt production of its plug-in hybrid car, the Volt,
for five weeks figures to threaten President Obama’s
stated goal of seeing a million electric cars in the
U.S. by 2015.
That goal assumed that the Volt would become the
industry leader and that GM would have produced
505,000 Volts by then. Another mainstay of the
president’s electric-car plans, Fisker Automotive’s
Nina plug-in, is also on hold. The federal govern-
ment is not advancing new loan payments because
Fisker didn’t produce and sell as many of its first-
generation cars as it promised.
The government has made several investments to
promote the electric car industry, including grant-
ing GM $105.9 million to help it produce battery
packs for the Volt, and $151.4 million in a grant for
LG Chem to produce battery cells for the Volt. The
government also gives buyers of electric cars a tax
credit.
The company said on Friday it will halt production
of the Volt and lay off about 1,300 workers at its
Hamtramck, Mich., factory over the next couple of
months. The company sold just 7,700 Volts last
year, below its 10,000-car target, which was already
reduced from 15,000.

dizzying array of possibilities when
it comes to reusing wine-related
products, and now you can add
reclaimed wine barrels to the list.
Though some companies shave
off the top layers in an attempt
to reuse barrels, the wine-making
quality of such barrels is not al-
ways consistent. Afterward, at first
glance these old barrels may not
do much except hold some plants,
but that’s why we like Fontenay
Woods’ tasteful solution to reincar-
nate them as upscale flooring.
Wine can be fermented in a
number of materials, from ceramic
to terracotta, but typically it’s fer-
mented in wooden barrels (usually
oak) which impart certain flavours
to it. However, oak barrels are
costly and have a short lifespan,
with new French oak barrels cost-
ing up to a grand and lasting about
a decade before they can no longer
do the job. That’s a lot of barrels
going out of commission every
year.

VehiclesVolt Problems Could Hurt Obama’s Electric-Car PlanGeneral Motors’ announcement Friday that it would
halt production of its plug-in hybrid car, the Volt,
for five weeks figures to threaten President Obama’s
stated goal of seeing a million electric cars in the
U.S. by 2015.
That goal assumed that the Volt would become the
industry leader and that GM would have produced
505,000 Volts by then. Another mainstay of the
president’s electric-car plans, Fisker Automotive’s
Nina plug-in, is also on hold. The federal govern-
ment is not advancing new loan payments because
Fisker didn’t produce and sell as many of its first-
generation cars as it promised.
The government has made several investments to
promote the electric car industry, including grant-
ing GM $105.9 million to help it produce battery
packs for the Volt, and $151.4 million in a grant for
LG Chem to produce battery cells for the Volt. The
government also gives buyers of electric cars a tax
credit.
The company said on Friday it will halt production
of the Volt and lay off about 1,300 workers at its
Hamtramck, Mich., factory over the next couple of
months. The company sold just 7,700 Volts last
year, below its 10,000-car target, which was already
reduced from 15,000.

Though some companies shave
off the top layers in an attempt
to reuse barrels, the wine-making
quality of such barrels is not al-
ways consistent. Afterward, at first
glance these old barrels may not
do much except hold some plants,
but that’s why we like Fontenay
Woods’ tasteful solution to reincar-
nate them as upscale flooring.
Wine can be fermented in a
number of materials, from ceramic
to terracotta, but typically it’s fer-
mented in wooden barrels (usually
oak) which impart certain flavours
to it. However, oak barrels are
costly and have a short lifespan,
with new French oak barrels cost-
ing up to a grand and lasting about
a decade before they can no longer
do the job. That’s a lot of barrels
going out of commission every
year.
Fontenay Woods offers no less than
three specialized lines re-milled
from three different parts of the
barrel. Their “Cooperage” collec-
tion (named after the facilities
where casks are made) is made
from barrel heads, allowing the
original stamps and markings to
be displayed again prominently,
but in a new configuration.

Eco-Friendly Veggie RecipesRapini and Tomato Sauce with CapersWe know this isn’t the most beau-
tiful looking dish, but it sure is deli-
cious. The bitterness of the greens
with the sweetness of the tomatoes
and the added hit of saltiness from
the capers makes for a terrific
combination.
Ingredients:• 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
• 1 garlic clove, smashed
• 1 bunch rapini, large stems
removed, coarsely chopped
• 1 can tomatoes, coarsely
chopped
• 1/2 cup vegetable stock or
water
• 1 tbsp capers, drained
• Freshly ground pepper to taste
Directions:1. In a skillet heat olive oil until
it shimmers. Add garlic clove
and cook until it turns golden
brown. Remove garlic from skil-
let and set aside.
2. Add rapini to pan and saute
until it is almost tender, about
5 or 6 minutes. Add tomatoes
and stock and allow to simmer
for 10 minutes or so. Add ca-
pers and freshly ground pepper
to taste.
3. Serve over pasta or polenta.
