Te anonymous donors whopaid or burned cat iggerscare began reading about theFletcher amily and the re thatdestroyed their home on Hal-loween in Frederick County Re-port. Te couple was having din-ner at Castiglias in Winchester. My husband and I discussed thesituation on our ride home. Wereally wanted to do something tohelp.
Te donors continued to ol-low news o the amily in Freder-ick County Report. It was won-derul hearing about so manypeople coming together to helpthe amily, especially during theholidays.
Te couple are cat lovers. Teyhave three cats and take care o aourth. When they saw pictureso igger and heard about the
vet bill at the Plaza Pet Clinic inWinchester, the donors made acall and paid the bill in ull.
igger is such a cute thing andthe amily has been through somuch that we had to help. Beingcat lovers, we know how hard it
is to have your pet away rom you. Hopeully it helps to startthe amily become whole again.
Te picture o Colton holdingigger on last weeks cover wasadorable!
Te couple does not want rec-ognition; they just wanted to behelpul. I everyone does a littlebit to help, so much can get done.We wanted something good tocome out o this tragedy.
Dr. Wartlut, iggers primarycare vet at the Plaza Pet Clinic, assured this reporter that the
veterinary clinic did not holdigger hostage or its bill. Ac-cording to Dr. Wartlut, we toldthe amily they could take ig-ger home as soon as he was able.We were happy to work with theamily to get the bill paid. We allell in love with igger and hatedto let him go, but we wanted himhome with his amily as soon aspossible. Te clinic wrote-o
almost $1,000 in iggers carerom the bill.
racy Fletcher said the am-ily is working its way throughthe holiday season. Everyonehas been a big help. Its hard oneveryone when you lose every-thing. My son Hunters room wasdecorated with all o his awardsor grades and athletics. Tat isthe kind o loss that breaks yourheart. But we are thrilled to haveigger back home where he be-
longs.Tank you again to everyone
who has helped the Fletchers.

When the HolidaysWont Light Up
Q:I bought three strings of exte-rior holiday lights last year todecorate the trees in my backyard. This year, although I put them upthe same way, half the bulbs on onestring wont light. Whats goingon? Carol in Cocoa, Fla.
A:The problem is likely as sim-ple as a single burned-out light bulb halfway down the string. Turnon the lights as you normally do andlocate the first bulb on the string thatwill not light up. Mark that bulb witha small bit of masking tape so youcan find it again, and then unplug thestring.
Go to the box where you stored your
holiday lights and look for a containeror a small plastic bag that containsreplacement bulbs and fuses. Returnto your string, locate the burned-out bulb, remove it by pulling it firmlystraight out of the socket, and put areplacement bulb in its place. (Thenew bulb must be the same size andtype as the old one.) Plug the stringback in and turn on. If the bulb was theculprit, the entire string will relight.
If that method doesnt work, youmay have a fuse issue. Fuses are locat-
ed in each of the plugs. Iare attached end-to-endure occurs at one of thes
points, try removing from the attached end aa replacement fuse (be sthe entire string before dto be safe).
Fuse faults can occur wstrings are attached end-
loading the circuit. Readinstructions to find out tnumber of light stringsattached to each other (tha good limit).

Te Green Circle pedestrianpath around the city o Win-chester has gained more thanone oothold recently, helpingthe nearly two-decade project inits power-walk toward comple-tion.
Planning Director im You-mans says that City ofcials vot-ed on uesday, December 13 todevelop, with consultants, twomeasures involving the Circle. One, known as the AmherstStreet segment, leads rom Old
own out to Meadow Branch Av-enue across rom the Winchester
Medical Center. Te Council alsovoted to acquire two acres o landbehind the Moose Lodge on EastCork Street; this second sectionwill be known as own Run Lin-ear Park, Phase 2.
Te construction o the path, meant or walking, jogging andbicycling, has been a start-and-stop process since 1994 whencity ofcials deemed it an o-cial project and not just theabstract idea it had been as arback as twenty years ago. Tepath was originally conceived to
provide a sae, environmentallysound seven-to-eight miles or
residents, tourists and studentsin Winchester to utilize as an al-ternate mode o travelling withinthe City, involving own Run wa-terways as much as possible. TeCircle includes, but isnt limitedto, important City destinationslike Shenandoah University andJim Barnett Park, WinchesterMedical Center and the Oldown Historic District.
Considerations have to be
made when implementing newphases o the path, says im.
For example, this being an en- vironmentally-oriented project,we want to plant trees as muchas possible along the path. Wetake into account drainage anderosion issues. We work withlandowners, as was the case withthe Amherst Street Improve-ment Project across propertybelonging to the Museum o theShenandoah Valley and the re-cent acquisition rom the MooseLodge. Winchesters expansion on Green Circle works
Reindeer not all red-nosed Rudo
While Rudolph might be the most a-mous reindeer, there remains no docu-mented evidence o a red-nosed reindeerguiding Santas sleigh on an especiallystormy Christmas Eve. But just becauseno one has yet to nd the real Rudolph, that doesnt mean we dont know a ewthings about Santas sled buddies.
Reindeer are also known as Caribouin North America.
Females generally weigh between 170to 260 lbs., while males are oten muchlarger, weighing as little as 200 lbs. butas much as 460 lbs.
Reindeer reside in both the Arctic and Subarcticing o wild reindeer and herding o semi-domesticatis important to several Arctic and Subarctic people.
Reindeer ur can vary considerably. In northern preindeer tend to have white ur, while southern popudarker in color.
Reindeer size can also vary depending on locationern reindeer populations tend to be larger than thecounterparts.
In most reindeer populations, both males and emantlers. Among deer, reindeer have the largest antlersto body size.
Males oten battle with each other by locking antright to mate with certain emales.
During migration, some reindeer reach speeds omiles per hour.

What?
Ped-heads, im calls them.Te buttons on street cornerspedestrians use to change trafcow so they can cross rom oneside to the other.
Ohthose. So who pays orthem, should they need to be in-stalled?
Most o the work were able todo with the Green Circle comesrom grant money, im says.
And because its ederal moneywere working with, other agree-ments must be honored, like pro- viding proper signage along thetrail and ensuring that the path is
accessible to everyone, includingramp installation where neces-sary. Ofcials want to be surethe trail is available to all whowish to ollow its meanderingpath through the Citys amenities
and natural scenery. One other eort aimed at draw-
ing people to the path is a mini-marathon or race enthusiastsBeginning in 2004, the GreenCircle 5K and one-mile Kids Runhave been staged annually in Oc-tober. Te races are sponsoredby the Shenandoah UniversityPhysical Terapy Departmentand Shenandoah Valley Run-
ners. Both races begin and end atthe Abrams Crossing ShoppingCenter on Jubal Early Drive andare routed through the AbramsCreek Wetlands Preserve.
So whether youre a weekend
workout warrior or just want toslow down and experience his-toric Winchester without hav-ing to search or a parking space, get on the Green Circle. Werealways excited to see the Circlebecome more o a reality, saysim.

Te eyes o the nation will bexed on the Presidential elec-tion next November, but manypolitical watchers are lookingvery closely at Virginia, as it mayhold the answer to who will con-trol the US Senate going orward.Te razor-thin majority held bythe Democrats is at risk and tak-ing a Democratic seat in the OldDominion would go a long waytoward putting Republicans backin power. With President Obamaat the top o the ticket and the ate
o the House and White House indoubt, the prospect o a Republi-
can controlled government is ter-riying nervous Democrats.
im Kaine, the Democrat, andRepublican George Allen met ortheir rst debate on December7th in Richmond and both candi-dates scored some blows. Allenhas previously served the stateas a US Senator and im Kainewas a popular, moderate Demo-cratic governor beore going oto become the chairman o theDemocratic National Committee.Kaine tried during the debate torame Allen as the kind o Repub-
lican that voters overwhelminglyrejected in 2006 and 2008.
Allen or his part attemptedto marry the image o PresidentObama, unpopular at the mo-ment in Virginia, with that oim Kaine. Allen pointed outthat Kaine had basically been aspokesperson or the President asthe chair o the DNC. Consider-ing Kaines personal popularity asgovernor, it will be his time at theDNC and his relationship withPresident Obama that will likelyhurt him the most. Kaine and thePresident are close and the Presi-dent seriously considered Kaine
as a running mate, though even-tually gave in to voices o doubt
over Kaines outspoken Catho-lic aith and somewhat pro-lieviews.

Git baskets make an
easy, afordable option
Te go-to git o late is the g it card. Chance are, though, that recipients -- although thrilled thatthey can do their own shopping -- may nd gitcards a bit impersonal.Statistics indicate that around $100 million in
git cards are purchased every year in the U.S.Despite being a popular git item, roughly six to10 percent o all git cards go unused, accordingto the ower Group. Some even come with in-activity ees. As an alternative to git cards, gitbaskets may be a welcome change.Git baskets are relatively easy to put together
and sometimes, especially around key holidays, can be purchased ready-made. Grouping similar-ly themed items together to t a particular inter-est can t the bill when shoppers cant decide ona git to buy.Te advantage to git baskets is that they can
be assembled or just about any hobby, interestor occasion. Tey dont even have to be in a tra-ditional basket. Heres a look o some easy gitgroupings to t a wide variety o events.* New baby: A collection o baby-themed items
works when wishing new parents well. It can alsobe a good solution or when all o the bigger-scaleitems on a baby registry have already been pur-chased and only the smaller, lower-priced thingsare let. Put together inant -shirts, wash cloths, outlet saety plugs, shampoo, diapers, and the
other things new parents may not immediatelythink to buy. Wrap it all up in a portable babybathtub or a container that has utility.* Housewarming: Kitchen essentials are good
ideas or newlyweds or those who just bought anew home. Scour the kitchen tool aisles o de-partment stores or specialty shops. Tese can bethemed according to what is purchased as well. For example, ll a large mixing bowl with a rub-ber spatula, a box o paper mufn cups, cake mix,and mixing spoons or the person who loves tobake.
* ravel: Getting ready to take a trip can be a bithectic, and a traveler may overlook some o theessentials that can make the vacation more plea-surable. Items like a travel alarm clock, miniaturesize toiletries, travelers checks, gum, a journal, travel guides, and a memory card or the personscamera are good ideas. Pack all o these thingsinside o an expandable tote bag.* Kids activity bag: A simple git that ts the
needs o kids is a backpack or tote bag lled withboredom-busters. Tese can include portablemanipulative toys, coloring books, crayons, col-ored pencils, puzzles, DVDs, a disposable cam-era, and any other toys that t the interests o therecipient.* Host/hostess git: Saying thanks to a riend
or amily member who has invited you over ora dinner or overnight stay can be as simple asgrouping a ew things together. Put together a
basket with a set o sheets, hand towels, pillowand other essentials that can be appreciated byuture guests.* Food: One git idea that goes quite well in a
git basket is ood. Pick a theme and put theitems together. Barbecue lovers can appreciatesauce, shish kabob skewers, spice rubs, a cook-book, hickory chips, grill tools, and other similaritems.Git baskets are personalized gits that are easy
to assemble and can be a viable alternative to gitcards.
Food and beverage groupings are popu-
lar choices for gift baskets.

much more moderate to liberalvoters that have been ocking toNorthern Virginia or years.
Te debate, while civil, indi-
cates that the campaign aheadwill be marked by negativity andpolitical attacks. Allen will attackPresident Obama and attempt totie him together with Kaine, whileKaine will attack Allens record asa Senator in a time when Repub-licans became very unpopular.Kaine in particular wants to ap-
pear as the moderate alternativeto a man he wants to paint as areactionary conservative. Hisimage is still solid in Virginia,
despite his time as chair o theDNC, but many voters may notbe aware that he held that posi-tion. Allen and his campaign warchest will make sure to poundthat into every voters head, whileKaine will likely spend millionson ads describing Allen as out otouch and extremist.

Last-minute shopping or the holidays
Its December 22and youve just barelymade it through halo your holiday shop-ping list. Te panicmay have set in that you just dont haveenough time to geteverything done.Tis is a common
scenario around theholidays. Shoppershave the best inten-tions to get their gitsearly, but whether be-cause o work obliga-tions or social events, the task seems to getpushed urther and
urther into December. Soon many are staring down the calendarexperiencing sweaty palms. Many others may be putting o holi-day shopping simply because o the current state o the economyand aordability.According to a Steelhouse Marketing Consultants poll o 1,000
consumers, 62 percent predict they will spend less money on the2011 holiday season. Plus, 56 percent o amilies predict they willcomparison shop more than they have in the past. Tese actorsmay contribute to just how long shoppers put o actually gettinginto stores or going online to shop. For the scores o shoppers who consciously or subconsciously
wait until the last possible minute to shop, there are ways to sur-vive and surprise riends and amily with great gits.
* Git cards: Tey may not have sentimental meaning behindthem, but git cards are ast and easy. Chances are you can runinto a store and be out with a handul o git cards in less than 15minutes, depending on lines at the checkout counter. Also, many
supermarkets, bookstores and other retailers oer git card ki-osks enabling you to shop or dierent git cards all in one place.* Food and beverages: While everyone is heading to the mall in
droves, you can be stepping inside o a gourmet ood or spiritsstore. Splurge on ne cheeses or that trendy bottle o liquor thata git recipient has mentioned but not yet purchased or him- orhersel.* Magazine subscription: A magazine subscription is an easy x
as a last-minute git. Purchase one copy o the magazine at thenewsstand and wrap it up nicely. Put a note that a years worth othis periodical is on the way. No one will suspect that the git wasa last-minute thought.* E-certicates: Retailers like music or book sellers will e-mail
a git certicate code to the person o your choice on a selecteddate. For those who are never without an e-reader or mp3 player, digital gits could t the bill.* Gas card: It may sound unny and tacky, but a gas card rom
a brand-name station is a universally acceptable git or anyonewho drives regularly. With uctuating gas prices, lling up thetank can be an expensive venture. Having a pre-paid g it card canhelp.Online retailers are also there to help last-minute shoppers.
Many online retailers guarantee in-time-or-Christmas shippingeven on gits ordered as late as December 23. However, overnightshipping charges will cost more. But its all worth it to get theitem in time.Waiting until the last minute or shopping can induce some anx-
iety. But knowing about easy gits or procrastinators can take thestress out o this type o shopping.
