FOUNDERS DAY AT THE ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL
The Annual Founders Day celebration was held on 22 April in the courtyard of the Architecture
School. Actives grilled beef and vegetarian burgers and served them buffet style along with a
choice of salads, chips and donuts and cookies for dessert. After the meal WA Mikhel Hafner
welcomed alums and had the students introduce their parents. He then turned it over to alumni
association president Dave Pezda. Dave thanked the actives for the meal and asked the graduating
seniors to come forward to receive APX medallions which they can wear on their graduation
gowns. Vern Gibbs Scholarship Chair, Jeanne Hubert presented scholarships to Sophie Ruf and
Giovanni Martinez. Their submissions will appear in the Fall/Winter newsletter. The alums then
retired to a classroom for their annual meeting. Notes from the meeting are on page 2.

ANNUAL MEETING OF THE IKTINOS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
NOTES FROM THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE
IKTINOS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
The meeting was called to order by President Dave Pezda and roll call was taken. There were ten
alumni and one active present. After approving the minutes from 2017, they went on to old
business: Treasurer Devon Kinney is still investigating the APX Fund at the Architecture School,
Linda Lilly reported that the policy of National is that APX brothers doing graduate work at a
school that has an APX chapter may choose to participate in either the alumni association or the
active chapter and the outgoing WA Alex Worth has informed Devon that the $2,234.00 residual
from the centennial celebration that is currently in the active chapter’s account will be returned to
the alumni association within five days. Linda Lilly and Mikehl Hafner reported on Convention.
Dave Pezda reported that we have received some copies of the program from the William Sanders
Fanning exhibit in Croatia. One copy was given to the active chapter and one copy will go into
the alumni association archives. Devon Kinney reported that our assets are $13,537.88. Mikehl
Hafner reported for the active chapter: the new e-board will be using Robert’s Rules, they will
establish an employment outreach with alumni and they initiated nine new brothers bringing the
total number of actives to 50. Jeanne Hubert reported for the Vern Gibbs Scholarship. There was
a discussion of how we could grow the fund. Linda reported for the newsletter: the fall/winter
issue will continue as electronic (except for those who requested a hard copy) and the Iktinos Face
Book page is now renamed Linda Lilly-Iktinos Communications. Additional copies of the history
book have been printed; please contact Linda if you would like to order one. Elections were held
and the same officers and board members were reelected by acclamation. Under new business
Linda requested petty cash for miscellaneous expenses (cards, postage, etc.). The annual picnic
was announced for 2 September. Under suggestions for the betterment of the fraternity, Airun
Sondgeroth suggested that the actives reach out to UG0 students. Jeanne Hubert expressed an
interest in having a fraternity house for our actives. National discourages this for liability reasons.

ALPHA RHO CHI – 70TH NATIONAL CONVENTION
The convention was held at the downtown Marriott overlooking the Portland River. Attendees
began arriving on Wednesday; several visited the Rodin exhibit at the Portland Art Museum and
later got together for dinner. On Thursday afternoon convention-goers had a choice of four
optional tours: Skylab Architecture, Allied Works, ZGF Architects or Ecotrust Building. On
Thursday evening the Welcome Reception took place at Portland Center Stage at the Armory
where attendees posed along the staircase and balcony for the group photo. Business sessions
were held on Friday and Saturday (see notes on pages 4-6). On Friday evening the Iktinos Alumni
Association took our chapter out to dinner at the Mandarin Cove. They were joined by the
Demetrius Alumni Association delegate and the two pledges from the Amenophus Colony. After
the Saturday business session, attendees shopped at the APX Marketplace. The Awards Banquet
was held Saturday evening in the Marriot Ballroom.
ALUMNI/ACTIVE DINNER
In January the Iktinos Alumni Association
hosted the annual alumni/active dinner at the
Newport West Clubhouse. Attendees
enjoyed appetizers and chatted about how
they spent the holidays. They then held a
brief business meeting to choose the alumni
delegate for National Convention. The
delegate will be Veronica Bauman. After the
meeting there was a buffet supper.

NOTES FROM THE PORTLAND CONVENTION BUSINESS MEETINGS
24 and 25 MARCH, 2017
On Friday morning WGA Phil Buckberg
welcomed the delegates and those in good
standing were seated. The Iktinos Alumni
Association was represented by Veronica
Bauman and the Iktinos Chapter by Mikhel
Hafner. They then heard from those asking
to be seated by special consideration.
Theodorus was missing the Corporation form
from the State of Tennessee. Sastratus did not
have a seal on their form. After offering
adequate explanations these two chapters
were seated. Seshaute was denied being
seated until their credentials could be
reviewed. A ten minute break was called to
review the credentials. After the break,
Seshaute was seated as was Apolodorus
bringing the delegate total to 49. Phil read
the names and chapters of brothers who had
passed since the last convention and called
for a minute of silence. The delegates then
voted to accept the standing rules of the
convention.
The floor was opened to nominations for President and Secretary of the Convention. There were
four nominations for president one of whom declined the nomination and two nominations for
secretary. Nominating and candidate speeches were given for the position of president. The
delegates voted by ballot. Emily Buckberg of the Olympus Chapter was elected. She was sworn
in by the WGA. Nominating and candidate speeches were given for the position of secretary and
again the delegates voted by ballot. Kylie Miller of Pytheos was elected. Emily appointed Jessica
Zamora of Cossutius as parliamentarian and Moises Gonzales as sergeant-at-arms. Kylie, Jessica
and Moises were sworn in by Emily. This was followed by a ten minute recess.
When the delegates were reseated, the convention president asked for volunteers to for the Audit,
Resolution and Nominations Committees. Several attendees came forward. Phil Buckberg gave
the report of the Grand Council. (Note: the official report is posted on-line at the Grand Council
website.) Phil recognized and thanked the members of the Grand Council for the work they’ve
done throughout the year. Since last year the fraternity has added more chapters. There are
currently less colonies because more of them have become chapters. The status of the fraternity
is 1100 student members from 31 chapters, 24 of which have more than 20 members, 11 dormant
chapters, one colony at Southern Illinois University, 21 alumni associations and 10 metro groups.
A new activity organized last year was Alumni Days. The Grand Council also organized an
Advisor Round Table and a Leadership Conference. Phil also reported that we have new insurance
and that a representative of the insurance company will speak at lunch and will hold a workshop.
He also noted that they are making progress with the backlog of membership certificates. He then
5
talked about better record keeping and redoing the national data base. Phil noted that 100% of the
alumni associations are on line and would like to see the same from chapters. He then turned the
floor over to the WGE, Emily Lewis. Emily reported that the total income was $174,000.00. The
biggest expense was the leadership conference; other expenses were insurance, administration,
badges and certificates, Grand Council meetings and colony programs. The WGS, Christina
Anderson, spoke about publications. WGAA, Hao Phung talked about Alumni Days held in
October in Chicago, San Francisco, New York City and Houston. Next year additional Alumni
Days will be held in New Orleans and Los Angeles. He also reported that Metro Groups have held
summer picnics and monthly Happy Hours. There are two new alumni associations this year.
2016 set a record high for alumni dues. Phil then took back the mike and spoke about risk
management and emphasized that if anything is not APX policy, then it is not covered. He
recognized non-GC members who have assisted the Grand Council and thanked them for their
work. Grand Advisor, Vicki Horton recognized members of the APX Foundation and past Grand
Council members in attendance. The Grand Council then took questions from the delegates and
other attendees. The Grand Council report was accepted by the delegates.
Nicole Dress, President of the APX Foundation began her talk with a brief history of the
Foundation. It was established in 1989 on the occasion of the fraternity’s 75 th anniversary.
Contributions to the Foundation are tax-free. They manage four APX funds; some are for
scholarships and others provide grants to chapters and alumni associations for professional
programs. In addition they manage 17 funds on behalf of chapters and alumni associations. Nicole
also talked about the program providing bronze, silver and gold APX medals overseen by the
foundation. She then took questions. The report of the APX Foundation was accepted by the
delegates.
The Nominating Committee gave their report. There were two nominees for WGAA and one each
for WGS, WGE and WGI. The report was accepted and there were no further nominations. This
was followed by nominating speeches and candidate speeches.
There was no unfinished business from last convention.
After lunch, attendees heard from Keynote Speaker Nico Larco, AIA, Associate Professor of
Architecture at the University of Oregon and Co-Director of the Sustainable Cities Initiative.
This was followed by eight workshops. From 2:00-2:45 these were NCARB, Volunteer APX,
Chapter Houses and Recruitment. During the 15 minute break Portland’s famous Voodoo donuts
were served. From 3:00-4:00 four more workshops were held: Social Media, Ritual, Misconduct
and Photography.
When the delegates and attendees reassembled, they were told that the report of the Audit
Committee was tabled until tomorrow. The Resolution Committee presented nine motions, 70A
through J (70I was replaced by 70J). Last year the Convention voted to change the length of terms
of the Grand Council from two to three years. 70A addressed the time table for electing officers.
This was passed. 70B involved “cleaning up” the description of appointees (such as regional
directors). This passed. At the previous Convention the WGI was added to the Grand Council,
therefore a description of the WGI’s duties was needed. After much discussion and several
amendments, motion 70C was passed. 70D dealt with an error concerning the WGE, in that it
referred to Article 15 when it should be Article 17. This passed. 70E was a motion that any change
to the ritual would need ¾ of the delegates to vote for it rather than the current 100%. This was
amended to 7/8 of the delegates and passed. 70F was a motion to add a table of contents to the
bylaws and constitution, this passed. At the WGA’s suggestion motion 70G was withdrawn. 70H
was a motion to have a committee to create a creed. This did not pass. 70J was a motion to
6
recognize Amenophis Colony to become a chapter. This was tabled until tomorrow so that everyone
could review the petition. The election of members to the Grand Council was tabled until tomorrow. The Saturday business session was called to order at 9:00am. The Audit Committee reported that the
books are in order. The report was accepted. The delegates then voted on motion 70G to accept the
Amenophis Colony as a chapter. The maker of the motion spoke on behalf of the colony. This passed
with much applause, hugging and congratulations. Motion 70K was out of order because it had not
been received in time for yesterday’s session. It will be carried over until next year’s convention. It was asked if there were any more nominations for Grand Council; there were none. The candidate
for WGI gave his speech. He was not in attendance yesterday because of his job. There were several
questions for the two candidates for WGAA. The results of the election are: WGAA Hao Phung,
WGS Christina Anderson, WGI AJ Kessinger and WGE Emily Lewis. Suggestions for the betterment of the fraternity included a plea for more volunteers to fill positions
including RD’s. The Convention director reported that the 2018 Convention will be held in the historic
district of Baltimore, 2019 will be in Houston and 2020 will be in Omaha. Attendees were reminded
to bring their lanyards and IDs to the banquet. The 70th APX Convention was adjourned.
2017 IKTINOS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION DUES
Enclosed with this newsletter is the 2017 dues form. Our dues remain at $20.00/year. In addition to
the dues, the form includes lines for an additional contribution toward the operating expenses of our
alumni association, the Vern Gibbs Scholarship Fund and the Iktinos Endowment. Our alumni
association budget pays for the printing and mailing of the newsletter, registration for our delegate to
National Convention, taking our active chapter to dinner on Friday evening at convention, medallions
for graduating seniors presented at Founders Day, State of Michigan non-profit corporation fees and
park rental for the annual picnic (the $5.00/person suggested donation for picnic attendees goes toward
the cost of burgers, hot dogs and tableware). The Vern Gibbs Scholarship Fund provides scholarships
to our actives. Interest from the Iktinos Endowment Fund has been used to supplement the Vern Gibbs
Scholarships as well as for projects such as the Iktinos History Book. If our alumni association would
at some time decide to provide a fraternity house for our chapter, the Iktinos Endowment Fund can be
used for that. The Iktinos Alumni Association works to be supportive of our active chapter and as an
inspiration to them of continuing brotherhood. Your dues and contributions make this possible.
IKTNOS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FACEBOOK NAME CHANGE FROM NEWSLETTER EDITOR, LINDA LILLY
Our Facebook page name has been changed from “Iktinos Alum Assoc” to “Linda Lilly-Iktinos
Communications”. This is because of Facebook policy. Facebook pages for Associations cannot be
interactive, that is, information can be posted for the membership, but they cannot respond to it or post
their news and photos. However an individual Facebook page is interactive. In order to be an
individual, the person’s name must be on it. Although we’ve had Facebook for several years now, it
was just a few months ago that they realized that my name is probably not “Iktinos Alum Assoc”. Until
then I was tagged in Facebook photos as “with Iktinos Alum Assoc”. If one of the Iktinos brothers
announces a marriage, birth of a child, a landmark birthday, etc. I send a greeting card on behalf of our
alumni association. Their posts on Facebook are my primary source of information. For condolences,
I usually hear from the surviving spouse or a family member in a letter or personal email.

CONDOLENCES
Last month the newsletter editor received a note from Ruth Dawson that her husband, Brother John
Dawson had passed away in January in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was originally from
Stainbaugh, Michigan. Brother Dawson served as WA of Iktinos during his days as a student. When
he graduated from Michigan in 1953 he joined the army. For 30 years John had a successful
architectural practice designing mostly schools and churches in Kalamazoo, Michigan and
Washington, DC. In 1990 President George H. W. Bush appointed John to the position of Architectural
Preservation Officer for both the Old Executive Office Building and the east and west wing of the
White House. Shortly after his retirement in 1995 he was selected to oversee the permanent
preservation of significant sites at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. In 1998 John and Ruth were able to
fully retire, splitting their time between Eagle Harbor, Michigan and Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
In 2012 they moved to a retirement community in Colorado Springs to be closer to their family. Iktinos
extends condolences to Brother Dawson’s wife Ruth and their family. A sympathy card has been sent
on behalf of our alumni association.
DECEMBER AND MARCH PLEDGE INITATIONS
Our active chapter initiated pledges in December and again in March at the Newport West Clubhouse. In December several alumni got together for a holiday brunch at the home of George and Linda Lilly
before going up to the Clubhouse to wish the actives well on the initiation and to talk with the pledges
about the role of the alumni association. The March initiation took place during St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Alums again stopped by the
Clubhouse and brought the actives and pledges homemade shamrock sugar cookies.

IKTINOS ANNUAL FAMILY PICNIC
SATURDAY, 2 SEPTEMBER, 12:00 NOON
In the past the Iktinos Alumni Association family picnic has been held in July. Although our
student chapter has been invited very few have attended. This is of course because they are back
home and have summer jobs or are maybe lucky enough to do summer studies abroad. In order to
have more active participation, this year the Alumni Association has decided to hold the picnic
when the students are back in Ann Arbor. The picnic will be on Saturday, 2 September at Delhi
Park Metro Park, North Shelter. We have checked the football schedule; Michigan will be
away playing Florida in Arlington, Texas.
The alumni association will provide hamburgers, hotdogs, condiments and tableware. A donation
of $5.00/adult is suggested, no donation is necessary for children. Attendees are asked to bring an
appetizer, salad or dessert. There will be a piñata for the children and whiffle ball and beanbag
toss for all.
All Iktinos alums and actives and their families are invited as well as APX brothers from other
chapters living or visiting in our area. Mark your calendar for Saturday, 2 September!!! We hope
to see you then!!!
