YESTERDAY'S RACE RESULTS FROM | OTAKI - QUEANBEYAN - TAREE | PAGE 13
Robbie Griffiths admits he feels like
a new man after overcoming a
potentially fatal health scare last year
and is full of zest for the year ahead on
the racetrack as he oversees his Cranbourne stable.
Track gallops this morning will help
determine how many of Griffiths’ team of nine
two-year-olds - a glimpse of what lies ahead
for the popular horseman - will line up in the
two divisions of the Blue Diamond Preview at
Caulfield on Saturday.
Griffiths has three juveniles, Glenfiddich
(Fastnet Rock), Mottram (Dawn Approach)
and Mysterious Art (Wandjina), nominated
for the Blue Diamond Preview (C&G) (Listed,
1000m) with the former set to have a hit-out this
morning to confirm his place in the $160,000
race. Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Dubai on cards for returning Hey DocMultiple Group 1 winner Hey Doc (Duporth)
remains on track for a tilt at the Al Quoz Sprint
(Gr 1, 1200m) in Dubai if he pleases co-trainer
Tony McEvoy in his upcoming Melbourne
assignments. Hey Doc was a dominant winner
of the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in
Perth on November 30 at his second start back
from 14 months off the scene after undergoing
joint surgery. The gelding's next start is Friday
night's Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at The
Valley and on Monday morning the six-year-
old was taken to the track where he produced a
pleasing solo gallop over 1000 metres with Luke
Currie aboard. "I think if he runs well on Friday
night we'll look at going to the Orr, but Dubai is
definitely on the cards," McEvoy said. "We want
to go there and that's on the 28th of March, so
it's a little way off.” Morning Briefing page 4 >>

The Edinburgh Park-bred Glenfiddich
showed talent in his first campaign, running fifth in the Maribyrnong
Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Flemington, before having excuses in the Merson
Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) nine days later, a race in which Magic
Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Away Game (Snitzel) ran fourth.
“He’s the most advanced and if he gets a run I think he will go well,”
Griffiths yesterday said of Glenfiddich, who was a $200,000 Magic Millions
purchase by his trainer and Peter Ford Thoroughbreds.
“He won a jump-out last week at Cranbourne and he will gallop (this)
morning.
“I thought if he drew the outside barrier at Flemington he could have
easily have ran 1-2-3 and won the race and then at Sandown he bombed
the start and got into trouble and cut a leg in running.
“Everything went wrong that day. Using Tagaloa as a formline, who
ran alongside him at Flemington, I think that his performances are better
than they read.”
Stablemate Mysterious Art will also have a hit-out this morning to
determine whether the $36,000 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale
graduate has his first start in the Preview.
He finished runner-up in a jump-out on January 13 at Cranbourne
Racecourse while Glenfiddich won an 800-metre heat on the same day.
“I reckon he is holding together well and he will gallop with
Glenfiddich and he’s a big chance of running,” Griffiths said.
Mottram, who won a jump-out in December, was given a quiet jump-out
to finish second at the Cranbourne Training Centre yesterday and Griffiths will
monitor the colt’s condition before determining whether he lines up at Caulfield.
In the Blue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m), Griffiths has six two-
year-olds entered: Amy’s Pride (Pride Of Dubai), Bond Girl (Bel Esprit),
Halvoya (Unencumbered), Miss Bank Place (Magnus), Night Of Delight
(Night Of Thunder) and Sweet As Scandi (Magnus).
Bond Girl was runner-up in a jump-out yesterday but is an unlikely
starter, with Griffiths indicating that Night Of Delight, Miss Bank Place and
Sweet As Scandi were favoured to run on Saturday.
“The best of my fillies are Night Of Delight and Miss Bank Place. Miss
Bank Place won a jump-out very well this morning and Sweet As Scandi
won a trial at Cranbourne racecourse last week,” he said.
“They were either going to gallop (yesterday or today) and I thought
some of them just needed a
little bit more practice out of
the barriers so we used the
trial, whereas I was happy with
Glenfiddich and the same
applies to Mysterious Art.”
Griffiths only recently
returned to regular trackwork
and race days after recovering
from brain surgery. He was found to have a brain aneurysm in August last
year and underwent surgery soon after.
The Group 1-winning trainer said his extended time away from the
day-to-day running of his business proved he had a high-calibre team of
staff underneath him.
“I think the surgery has improved me - I feel sharper than ever. He
tweaked something for better in there,” Griffiths joked yesterday.
“But it does change your perspective and makes you appreciate things
a lot more and it’s certainly motivated me more than anything.
“It’s also been very good for the key leadership group in the stable
because they have all had to step up. The fact that they have succeeded
has meant they have got the credit and it has proven that they have got the
ability to do what is required.
“It has actually strengthened our team.”
The team of two-year-olds preparing for summer-autumn returns
comes after Griffiths bought four yearlings at the recent Magic Millions
Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
He bought colts by More Than Ready (Southern Halo), Rich
Enuff (Written Tycoon) and Magnus (Flying Spur) with Peter Ford
Thoroughbreds and a Choisir (Danehill Dancer) colt in conjunction with
Dream Thoroughbreds and Bluegrass Bloodstock.
The Magnus colt, who is from the same family as Griffiths’ Newmarket
Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner The Quarterback (Street Boss), and the
son of Rich Enuff are both Vobis eligible.
“You have a Magic Millions horse forever and you have all the Vobis
benefits from being conceived in Victoria - it’s fantastic to get Vobis horses
out of the Magic Millions sales. You can cover every base that way,” said
Griffiths, who is a long-time advocate of the Vobis scheme.

Manuel heading to Australia StakesHey Doc’s stablemate Manuel (Commands),
who won last year’s C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)
after resuming in the Australia Stakes, will also
return at The Valley on Friday night. A six-year-
old, Manuel has not raced since finishing last
in the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) last May.
Tony McEvoy, who trains in partnership with
son Calvin, gave Manuel a gallop at The Valley
yesterday. "We started off in this race with him
last year before he won the Orr, so we're on the
same path," he said.
Six Group 1 winners in Australia StakesAside from the McEvoy-trained duo, the
Australia Stakes is set to be a high-class renewal,
with six of the 14 nominations having previously
won a Group 1. Joining Hey Doc and Manuel as
top-tier winners to have been handed an entry
are Scales Of Justice (Not A Single Doubt) and
Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie) as well
as three-year-olds Microphone (Exceed And
Excel) and Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible).
Loving Gaby, who won over track and distance
when taking out the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) on October 25, is the TAB’s $3.50 early
favourite for Friday’s feature. Nominations have
been extended until this morning.
Embrace Me to face Australia Stakes challenge Danny O’Brien is under no illusions as to the
task facing Embrace Me (Shamexpress) in the
Australia Stakes, with the Group 3 winner having
been installed as a $34 outsider with the TAB.
"We're really keen to see her back at Moonee
Valley," O'Brien said. "Her best performances
by far have been at Moonee Valley. Albeit she's
not that well-placed at weight-for-age it's just
going to be good to get her back to a track where
she performs so well. I think she can run well
but it is a big step up to take on the established
weight-for-age Group 1 horses. She has always
run really well here but she needs to go to a new
level to win on Friday night."
McNeil to link with Yulong’s FreshIn-form jockey Jye McNeil is looking forward
to being reunited with the Yulong Investments-
owned Fresh (Fastnet Rock) in the Blue
Diamond Preview (Fillies) (Gr 3, 1000m) at
Caulfield on Saturday. The Peter and Paul
Snowden-trained juvenile made a strong
impression when winning by three lengths on
her debut at Geelong, while the runner-up,
Personal (Fastnet Rock), broke her maiden at
Flemington on Saturday. "That's a good guide
to go off, so hopefully all being well she can
run well on Saturday," McNeil said. “It will be
interesting to see how she measures up at that
level, but obviously I've got quite a nice opinion
of her. She had a little jump-out last Friday at
Flemington and she seemed to go quite well.

She's definitely improved out of Geelong. She is
dropping back to the 1000 metres, but she was
quite sharp at Geelong. I don't think the drop
back to the 1000 will worry her, but I reckon she
will run 1200 as well. So all being well she can
measure up."
Maher highlights Preview options Ciaron Maher and David Eustace are planning
a three-pronged attack on the fillies’ version
of the Blue Diamond Preview, with Marchena
(Deep Field), A Beautiful Night (Night Of
Thunder) and Unstoppabelle (I Am Invincible)
set to line up, while Toscanini (Fastnet Rock)
is being mooted for a tilt at the Blue Diamond
Preview (C&G) (Listed, 1000m). “This Saturday,
we’ll have Toscanini. We were going to have
a look at the Karaka Million with him but he
needed to win or run second at his first start
and he was narrowly beaten and ended up
fourth at Geelong,” Maher told Racing.com
yesterday. “We’ll see how he works tomorrow
and he might be an option. For the fillies, we’ve
got Marchena. She was placed in the Ottawa
down the straight. We’ve also got A Beautiful
Night, who won last start at Flemington, and
Unstoppabelle, who was a bit unlucky when a
short-priced favourite over at Adelaide at her
last start. She just slipped out the back and
we had to scratch her. If she had won that she
would have probably headed up to the Magic
Millions.’’
Strong Diamond hand for Maher and EustaceToscanini is a $101 chance with the TAB for
Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) glory on
February 22, but Maher believes he and Eustace
hold stronger chances elsewhere, suggesting
Tanker (Pride Of Dubai), Idea’s Man (Brazen
Beau) and Rathlin (Fastnet Rock) will all head
to the $1.5 million contest. “Tanker, we’ll most
likely see in the Prelude (in two weeks) and
Ideas Man in the Chairman’s (three weeks) and
Rathlin will probably just go straight in,’’ the
co-trainer told Racing.com. “His (Rathlin) was
a very good run at the Millions. He just went
left over the first couple of strides and it just put
him right at the tail of the field but his sectionals
were really, really good so hopefully he can
draw a little bit better and begin a little bit
better.’’ When asked for his leading contender,
Maher said: “Ideas Man I suppose was very
sharp here (winning the Inglis at The Valley)
and he came off a fairly light campaign. I always
thought he had quite a bit of improvement in
him. He spelled nicely and seems to be coming
up really well and seems to be nice and sharp.’’
Superium out to bounce backJoe Pride has entered Superium (Verrazano) in a
1400-metre handicap at Randwick on Saturday,
with a view to the three-year-old bouncing back
having been withdrawn from the
Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m)
at the Gold Coast last Saturday week when
Queensland veterinary stewards deemed his
action to be unsatisfactory on the eve of the
race. The decision irked Pride, who has also
entered Superium in an 800-metre barrier trial
at Warwick Farm today. “My vet cleared him
when he got back," Pride said. “He had an easy
week after the trip up to Queensland and back."
Superium has won three of his eight starts and
was second in a Randwick Group 3 last August.
Beau Balmain on comeback trailThe Jim Conlan-trained Beau Balmain (It’s
Gino) is set to make his first start since running
13th in the John F Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m)
at The Valley on September 7 when he lines
up over 1600 metres at Caulfield on Saturday.
“He developed a splint in the Feehan Stakes
so that’s why he went so badly and so went out
for a spell and we had him gelded at the same
time,” Conlan told Racing.com. “I think he was
waiting for his mates a bit as a colt. He would get
to the front and like a lot of stallions, he would
wait for the herd and he’d get his head up and
they would swamp him. I’m looking at his third
race being the Mornington Cup and that would
give him a gold ticket into the Caulfield Cup.’’
The winner of the Mornington Cup (Listed,
2400m) gains a ballot-free run in the Caulfield
Cup (Gr 1, 2400m).
Guard Of Honour to take on Tarzan
Last-start Gold Coast winner Guard Of Honour
(Northern Meteor) is set to clash with track
specialist Tarzan (Drumbeats) in Saturday’s
Open Handicap (1000m) at the Sunshine Coast.
The former made a successful debut for Eagle
Farm trainer Kelly Schweida when triumphing
on January 4 having previously been trained
by Kris Lees, while Tarzan has won 16 races
during his career, 10 over the 1000 metres at
the Sunshine Coast. "We haven't reinvented the
wheel. Often a change of scenery works with
these older horses," Schweida said of Guard Of
Honour. "He won a trial and was good at the
Gold Coast but Saturday will be another test.
He is a stakes winner and been placed in some
good Group races and if he can find that form
he will be hard to beat."

Siblings to clash in Sunshine Coast CupSiblings and stable companions Balboa Rocks
(Easy Rocking) and Pennino will clash in
Saturday’s Sunshine Coast Cup (Listed, 1400m)
for local trainer Darryl Hansen. The duo are the
only winners from five foals to race out of the
winning Clang (Bellotto) mare Alpha Girl, while
Balboa Rocks won the $125,000 race last year.
"We used to ride her in the lead but these days
we ride her with cover and she can really hit
the line hard," Hansen said of Pennino. "If you
go back through her form she is never far away
in good races. I think she is well up to a race
like the Sunshine Coast Cup. She can run in it
and then go for a spell with the winter carnival
in mind." Regarding Balboa Rocks, Hansen
added: "He always improves out of sight at his
second-up run so I expect him to go a lot better
in the Cup.”
Sydney targets likely for Australian Bloodstock pairAustralian Bloodstock-owned European
imports Danceteria (Redoute’s Choice) and
Chief Ironside (Lawman), both of whom have
been transferred to Kris Lees following spring
campaigns under the care of David Menuisier,
look set for autumn preparations geared
around The Championships at Randwick,
despite both having been nominated for the
All-Star Mile (1600m) at Caulfield on March 14.
"We nominated both horses but it doesn't look
like we've got a big enough ownership group
to get them in with enough votes," Australian
Bloodstock’s Jamie Lovett told Racing.com.
"Chief Ironside is the likelier of the two to come
to Melbourne." Having won the Crystal Mile
(Gr 2, 1600m) in October, Chief Ironside could
resume in an All-Star Mile 'win and you're
in' race, with possible targets including the
Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on
February 22 or the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m)
at Flemington two weeks later.
Sunlight back under saddleThree-time Group 1 winner Sunlight (Zoustar)
was ridden for the first time since undergoing
surgery to remove two chips from a splint bone
when trotting at Flemington yesterday. The
Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained speedster
underwent three weeks of box rest and three
weeks of walking following the operation and
she is now being set for an overseas trip to Royal
Ascot. "She was back under saddle today, first
day," Tony McEvoy said. "She was very fresh
and very excited to be back doing what she loves
doing. So it's just going to be a slow build-up
now. I want to take her to Royal Ascot, so that's
the goal. I've got to plan a path into that which
I haven't done yet. I just want to get her back
moving along a bit and making sure that that
leg is not going to flare up, which can happen.
If it flares up it means it's all off and we've got to
wait until the spring. But at this stage I'm pretty
comfortable that she's going to be fine."
Flemington Group 1 nominations releasedFollowing her recent setback, Sunlight will not
be asked to defend her Newmarket Handicap
(Gr 1, 1200m) crown with the four-year-old
not among the 60 nominations taken for the
Flemington sprint on March 7. Entries were
also released yesterday for the Australian Cup
(Gr 1, 2000m), run on the same day, with that
contest attracting 67 nominations, while the
Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) attracted 106
nominations, with the Caulfield Guineas (Gr
1, 1600m) winner and runner-up, Super Seth
(Dundeel) and Alligator Blood (All Too Hard),
potential runners in the $1 million feature on
February 29.
Warwick Farm trials brought forwardA Warwick Farm barrier trial session will be
conducted on Monday, February 3, after Racing
NSW officials brought the heats forward by
one day to avoid a clash with a provincial race
meeting. Nominations for the Warwick Farm
trials will close at 11am on Thursday, with heat
one to be run at 8:15am. A Gosford race meeting
will be held on Tuesday, February 4.
New manager for ClippertonSydney jockey Sam Clipperton is set to return to
race riding next month after taking an extended
break from the sport. Clipperton, who had a
stint in Hong Kong before returning to NSW at
the end of the 2019 season, has not ridden in a
race since September 27. Yesterday, Clipperton
announced that Andrew Northridge would be
his new manager and that he intends to ride at
the Randwick barrier trials on Thursday. He will
then make a reappearance at the races early in
February.
VRC to bring forward twilight meetingChanges will be made to Flemington’s twilight
meeting on March 7 after feedback from the
latest fixture on Saturday, with Victoria Racing
Club chief executive Neil Wilson indicating
race times will be brought forward. “We are
getting feedback from participants that the time
frames of 8pm are too late and we’ve taken that
on board,’’ Wilson told RSN 927’s Racing Pulse
yesterday. “So, for our meeting in March - we
are looking to confirm this shortly - will come
back to a 7pm finish and probably run from
2pm-7pm time frame rather than a 3pm-8pm
time frame, so that feedback has been well and
truly heard and we will make that adjustment.
We’ve also learned from feedback around
lunch and dinner and how all that works. We
made some adjustments on Saturday, which
was positive, but based on the feedback, we’ve
got some work to do with that as well.’’
NEW ZEALAND
Ellerslie kick-off for CatalystStar three-year-old Catalyst (Darci Brahma),
who was last seen winning the New Zealand
2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on November 9,
will return in the Mr Tiz Trophy (Gr 3, 1200m) at
Ellerslie on Saturday prior to embarking on an
Australian campaign. The son of Darci Brahma
(Danehill) showed his fitness when beating Cox
Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) third Te Akau Shark (Rip Van
Winkle) in a barrier trial at Matamata last week.
“At this stage if he does well at Ellerslie he’s
going over for the C S Hayes (February 15) and
his grand final will be the Australian Guineas
(February 29),” said Rick Williams, general
manager of owner Dick Karreman’s The Oaks
Stud. “If he gets enough votes for the All-Star
Mile he’ll go for that, too. Even if he does miss
out on the votes, he could pick up a wildcard
entry if he wins the Australian Guineas. He’s
really well and we couldn’t be happier with his
trial. He’s on target for Ellerslie.”

Darci Brahma’s resurgence to capture HK buyers’ attention
Catalyst’s sire Darci Brahma has 12 lots
catalogued in Book 1 of the upcoming NZB
National Yearling Sale at Karaka and The Oaks
Stud will offer six of them. However, Williams
believes interest in the youngsters will come
primarily from New Zealand and Hong Kong
buyers. “Despite what Catalyst has done, I
don’t expect any more demand than usual from
Australian buyers,” he said. “He’s left plenty of
winners over there, but most Australian buyers
haven’t taken to him. If there is a lift for him at
the sale this year I’m expecting it will be from
Hong Kong after two phenomenal years up
there.” The yearlings presented by The Oaks
Stud include Lot 139, a sister to Group 2 winner
Harlech (Darci Brahma), who recently finished
runner-up to Travelling Light (El Roca) in the
Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham.
Hassalls looking for big Karaka Millions paydayOwners Rodger and Christine Hassall look set
to be well represented at Ellerslie on Saturday
where their Hasstobemagic (Scissor Kick) is
set to contest the Karaka Million 2YO (Listed,
1200m) shortly after Madam Hass (Per Incanto)
has lined up in the Mr Tiz Trophy. Stablemate
Hasstobegood (Per Incanto), who was formerly
owned by the Hassalls, will take her chance in
the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (RL, 1600m). All
three horses are trained at Cambridge by Roger
James and Robert Wellwood and the former
said: “Madam Hass raced fiercely the other day
and got bombed late. It’s hard to see anything
beating Catalyst, but she’s good enough to be a
place chance. The same goes for Hasstobegood.
She had no luck fresh-up at Ellerslie last time
when flushed wide and even wider on the
turn. If she gets a draw she won’t be out of it on
Saturday.”
Westbury return for RondinellaJames and Wellwood will also saddle Rondinella
(Ocean Park) in the Westbury Classic (Gr 2,
1400m) at Ellerslie on Saturday with the five-year-
old having run eighth in the Matriarch Stakes (Gr
2, 2000m) at Flemington on November 9 when last
seen. “She came back from Melbourne very jarry
and muscle sore everywhere,” James said. “She’s
right again now, but the 1400 metres will be too
short for her on Saturday. We’ll make a decision
after the race where she goes next. She’ll probably
go straight over 2000 metres. She could run in the
New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie again. She got
knocked from pillar to post in it last year and still
ran third to Melody Belle and Danzdanzdance. It
was a top effort.”
Haunui Farm Classic looms for WyndspelleThe Haunui Farm WFA Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) on
February 22 is the next target for the Johno Benner
and Hollie Wynyard-trained Wyndspelle (Iffraaj)
following his runner-up effort in Saturday’s
Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). “It is probably the
obvious target,” Benner said.
“He does hold a nomination for the Herbie
Dyke but ten furlongs has proven to be too far
in the past. I know he won a Waikato Guineas
at 2000 metres, but that was at age-group level
and he got a peachy ride. We might just keep
our powder dry and come here to Otaki. It looks
like a race that he is really going to be hard to
beat in at weight-for-age. He ran well in it last
year when second and I am picking that Te
Akau Shark and Melody Belle won’t be here, so
we will probably just target that race.”
Eccles on target for OaksJennifer Eccles (Rip Van Winkle) remains on
target for the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m)
on March 14 following her third-place finish
from a wide draw in Saturday’s Desert Gold
Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m). Beforehand, the Shaune
Ritchie-trained filly is being aimed at the Fillies
Classic (Gr 2, 2000m) at Te Rapa on February
8 prior to an outing in the Lowland Stakes (Gr
2, 2100m) at Hastings on February 26. “She still
ran the last 600 metres faster than anything
else (32.25 seconds) and from an Oaks point of
view it was a good run,” Ritchie said of Jennifer
Eccles’ Desert Gold performance. “She’s had a
look at Trentham now and her next two runs
will be over 2000 metres and 2100 metres and,
if at any point 2000 metres is an issue, I’ll re-
evaluate things and look to drop her back to
1600 metres. But for now she’s on target for the
Oaks.”

Coolmore buys share in SottsassCoolmore have purchased a 50 per cent share
in last season’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1,
2400m) third Sottsass (Siyouni), with original
owner Peter Brant maintaining the other half-
share and Jean-Claude Rouget remaining as
the four-year-old’s trainer. Sottsass has won
four of his seven starts, including the Prix du

year’s Arc, with dual winner Enable (Nathaniel)

New Group / Grade 1 winners
Harbour Watch - Former Tweenhills
stallion Harbour Watch (Acclamation)
broke new ground on Sunday when
Waikuku’s (5 g Harbour Watch ex London
Plane by Danehill Dancer) success in the
Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin
provided his sire with his first elite-level
winner. Harbour Watch, who was unbeaten
in three starts as a two-year-old in Europe,
stood at Tweenhills for five breeding
seasons before being forced to retire from
covering duties in 2017 on veterinary
advice. His seven individual stakes winners
include the Group 2 winner Tis Marvellous.
Master Of Design - The Mitigator (5 g ex
Charming Ruby by Rubiton) provided his sire
Master Of Design (Redoute’s Choice) with
both a first stakes winner and a first elite-
level success when taking out the Thorndon
Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham on Saturday.
The Mitigator was purchased for $75,000 at
the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling
Sale before being passed in at the NZB Ready
to Run Sale of 2YOs later that year. He hails
from a good female line, being a half-brother
to Group 2-winning filly Fontein Ruby
(Turffontein) and the Wakeful Stakes (Gr 2,
2000m) placed Palumbo (Sebring). His own
dam, Charming Ruby, is a three-quarter sister
to Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner Fields Of
Omagh (Rubiton) and a half-sister to Group
2 winner Infinite Grace (Prince Of Birds).
Charming Ruby died in September 2017.
Master Of Design, who won Randwick’s TJ
Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), stands at Greta
West Stud for a fee of $3,300 (inc GST).
New stakes winnersDeep Brillante - Mozu Bello (4 c ex Harlan’s
Ruby by Harlan’s Holiday) provided his sire Deep
Brillante (Deep Impact) with just his second
stakes winner when he posted a comfortable
victory in Sunday’s Nikkei Shinshun Hai (Gr 2,
2400m) at Kyoto. The Naoyuki Morita-trained
four-year-old got the better of runner-up Red
Leon (Deep Impact) by two and a half lengths
with a further three-quarters of a length back to A
T Lassen (Summer Bird) in third. Mozu Bello has
now won four of his 11 starts.
Kizuna - Crystal Black (3 c ex Ash Cake by
Taiki Shuttle) made it two wins from as many
starts as he became Kizuna’s (Deep Impact)
third individual stakes winner when taking
out the Keisei Hai (Gr 3, 2000m) at Nakayama
on Sunday. The Fumimasa Takahashi-trained
three-year-old, who won a newcomers race on
his debut last month, beat favourite Sky Groove
(Epiphaneia) by half a length with Diastima
(Deep Impact) another two and a half lengths
away in third. Kizuna, winner of the Japanese
Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in 2013 also landed that
season’s Prix Niel (Gr 2, 2400m) at Longchamp
when edging out Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f)
hero Ruler Of The World (Galileo).
Needs Further - Armidale Stud resident
Needs Further (Encosta De Lago), who is best
known as the sire of inaugural All-Star Mile
(1600m) heroine Mystic Journey, registered
his fourth stakes winner on Saturday when
Bold Star (4 g ex Alzahra Star by Danewin) took
out the Kensington Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at
Flemington. Needs Further, who stood for a fee
of $13,750 last year, is also the sire of dual Listed
winner Pateena Areena and Mystical Pursuit,
the winner of five of her eight races, while
Mystic Journey won the Australian Guineas
(Gr 1, 1600m) prior to her All-Star Mile success.
Trained by Gordon Richards, Bold Star has now
won seven of his 17 starts, while he was runner-
up in the Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) on
New Year’s Day.

New Approach - Darley sire New Approach
(Galileo) reached his half century of stakes
winners when the Charlie Appleby-trained
Magic Lily (5 m ex Dancing Rain by Danehill
Dancer) came out on top in a thrilling finish
to the Cape Verdi (Gr 2, 1600m) at Meydan on
Thursday. The lightly-raced mare edged out the
promising Nisreen (Raven’s Pass) by a short
head with a further two and a half lengths back
to the winner’s stablemate Beyond Reason
(Australia) in third. Magic Lily, who finished
third in the Fillies' Mile (Gr 1, 1m) having won
by eight lengths on hef debut, is out of Oaks
(Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Dancing Rain (Danehill
Dancer). Her full- brother Jalmoud was third
in last year’s Grand Prix de Paris (Gr 1, 2400m).
New Approach stands at Dalham Hall Stud in
Newmarket for £30,000 (inc GST).
Per Incanto - Victory for Lightning Jack
(3 g ex La Petite by Savabeel) in Saturday’s
Gore Guineas (Listed, 1335m) provided Per
Incanto (Street Cry) with his 15th individual
stakes winner. Ridden by in-form Kozzi Asano
for Kelvin and Aimee Tyler, the three-year-
old gelding was winning for a second time
in seven starts when he caused something of
an upset by getting the better of Live Drama
(Ghibellines) and Bronte Beach (Reliable
Man) in a tight finish to the Gore feature. Bred
by Gloria Kenny and the estate of the late Jack
Georgetti, Lightning Jack is out of the mare La
Petite (Savabeel), a daughter of Avondale Cup
(Gr 1, 2200m) winner Creil (Frenchpark). Per
Incanto stands at Little Avondale Stud for a fee
of NZ$17,500 (plus GST).
Savabeel - Waikato Stud’s champion sire
Savabeel (Zabeel) sired his 96th individual
stakes winner when Showbeel (3 f ex Showileo
by Galileo) landed the Desert Gold Stakes
(Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham on Saturday.
Showbeel was purchased by Baker Racing
for NZ$215,000 from the 2018 New Zealand
Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale. She has now
won twice from seven starts for prize-money
earnings of NZ$57,190 and becomes the first
stakes winner for Showileo, herself a half-sister
to champion New Zealand stayer Showcause
(Giant’s Causeway), Group 2 winner Safwan
(Encosta De Lago) and Sydney Listed winner
Safwa (Danehill). Savabeel, the five-time New
Zealand champion sire, stands for a fee of
NZ$125,000 (plus GST).
Shocking - Soleseifei (7 m ex Evaline by
Van Nistelrooy) posted her first win in almost
two years when she came out on top in a
blanket finish to Saturday’s Wellington Cup (Gr
3, 3200m) and in the process provided her sire
Shocking (Street Cry) with a tenth individual
stakes winner. Ridden by Trudy Turner for
Jamie-Lee Lupton, just two heads split the
first three home crossing the line as The Good
Fight (High Chaparral) and Toms (Towkay)
filled the minor placings. Soleseifei, who was
a NZ$26,000 purchase from the Rich Hill Stud
draft at the 2014 Select Yearling Sale at Karaka,
has now won five of her 29 career starts.
Tapit - A maiden stakes win for Enforceable
(3 c ex Justwhistledixie by Dixie Union) in the
LeComte Stakes (Gr 3, 9.5f) at Fair Grounds
on Saturday provided America’s three-time
champion sire Tapit (Pulpit) with individual
stakes winner number 132. The Mark Casse-
trained three-year-old, who was winning for
the second time from seven starts, beat Silver
State (Hard Spun) by a length and a half, who
in turn was a neck in front of Mr Monomoy
(Palace Malice). Enforceable is a brother to
stakes winners Mohaymen and Kingly, plus a
half-brother to New Year’s Day (Street Cry), sire
of Eclipse Award finalist Maximum Security.

Brazilian horseman Dayverson
Barros enjoyed his best day yet at
the Taipa racetrack with a winning
treble on Saturday’s mixed turf and
sand programme.
Barros was in fine form on the day and
opened his account with a last-stride win on
the Victor Chan-trained Tagmaster (Eurozone)
in the Class 3 & 4 over 1800 metres on turf.
Put into a nice trailing spot one out and one
back by Barros, Tagmaster travelled well in the
run and peeled out to make his challenge on
straightening.
However, pacemakers The Macallan (Rock
‘N’ Pop) and Modena Best (Medaglia D’Oro),
didn’t surrender without a fight, with the
three having a battle down the straight before
Tagmaster prevailed by head on the line from
The Macallan, with Modena Best a short-head
away in third.
Superlative Choice (Hidden Dragon)
from the Alan Tam yard was the next winner
for Barros when he ran away with the Class 3
& 4 over 1800 metres (turf) after a lovely rail-
hugging ride by the Brazilian. The grey defeated
Blackjack Mok (All Too Hard), with Franklin
Lane (Shocking) finishing in third.
Barros rounded out his day with a big win
on the Tommy Tse and Louis Ho-prepared
Simply Impeccable (Street Cry) in the Class 2
over 1510 metres (sand).
The son of the 2002 Dubai World Cup (Gr
1, 2000m) winner Street Cry (Machiavellian) is
relishing the Taipa sand track and Saturday’s
win gave him his third success on the surface.
Simply Impeccable previously raced in New
Zealand, winning a maiden race at Matamata
over 1200 metres on a heavy track, as well as
being placed on four other occasions from his
14 runs when trained by Danica Guy.
Barros, who only joined the Macau jockeys
ranks in September, has now ridden 13 winners
and 11 placings from his 81 rides and is in sixth
spot on the riders standings.
Luis Corrales was another rider that
enjoyed a fine afternoon on Saturday with a
winning double aboard Winnie Star (Medaglia
D’Oro) and Silent Height (Redwood).
In the 3 & 4 Year Old Handicap (0-55),
the Patrick Lee-trained Winnie Star made it
two wins from two runs in Macau when he
produced a brilliant turn of foot under Corrales
to grab the runaway leader Special Charger
(Helmet) right on the wire, with Heat Of The
Battle (Fighting Sun) back in third.
The Godolphin-bred Winnie Star was
purchased by Lee for owner Mr. Chung Tat Fi
for $31,000 at the 2019 Gold Coast National
Racehorse Sale.
Winnie’s Star looks assured of a good
future, with the four- year-old’s time of 1.08.8
being just a tick slower than that of the winner
of the Class 1 on the card.
Corrales capped his day off with an easy win
in the final race, the Class 5 over 1050 metres on
the sand surface, on top of the Stephen Chow-
trained Silent Height (Redwood)
Silent Height gave nothing else a chance,
leading virtually all the way, to beat the race
favorite Crown Of Gold (Duporth), with Filial
Piety (Highly Recommended) in third.
Lover Paradise (Canford Cliffs) made it
win number 10 in Macau when he produced a
late surge under Roger Yu to snatch victory in a
thrilling three-way finish to the Class 1 & 2 over
1200 metres on the turf.
Prepared by Tony Fung, Saturday’s victory
gave the son of Canford Cliffs his eighth win over
the 1200 metres course, with his other two wins at
1500 metres. The five-year-old was not disgraced
in running fourth when beaten six lengths in
last year’s Macau Derby (Listed, 1800m) behind
Sacred Capital (O’Reilly) in race record time.
Lover Paradise was registered in Australia
as Dorset but never graced the race track or
trialled.
The win continued the good run for Roger
Yu, who is currently leading the jockeys’
premiership on 21 wins, five ahead of Oscar
Chavez on 16, with Fausto Henrique in third
spot on 15 victories.
