Forerunner Projects Overview

Four projects:1. ITEC – Intelligent Technologies Enhancing

Communication.2. Mentorship Skills: Development of an innovative

mentor simulation resource for the existing and future workforce.

3. Supporting Decision Making in the Community: A Digital Resource for Pre-Registration Nursing Students.

4. Simulated Patients: A standardised quality assured approach to training and implementation.

1. ITEC – Intelligent Technologies Enhancing Communication.

Successes &Challenges

• Tablet devices with associated apps are being increasingly used across health and social care sector.

• Community, hospital and school settings are taking advantage of tablet technology to support the assessment and treatment of both children and adults with communication difficulties.

• Currently no standardised guidelines relating to the use of tablets and apps leading to variance and variety across practice.

2. Mentorship Skills: Development of an innovative mentor simulation resource for the existing and future workforce.

Mentors are not fully equipped to undertake elements of the role to the standard expected by the NMC (Jones, 2010)

Current mentor training is classroom-based

Students can find it difficult to relate to role-plays ‘acted out’ by their peers (Sullivan, 2001)

Project justification

• 10 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the North West of England were invited to participate in the online survey

• 12 respondents completed the survey from 6 institutions • 7 respondents use paper-based case studies to address the

Mentorship ‘sign-off’ requirements• 5 respondents reported that they do not use simulation in

any aspect of their Mentorship training• 100% of respondents stated that they felt using simulation

as part of Preparation for Mentorship adds value to the course.

Development of case scenarios

Examples of case simulations

Innovative teaching and learning package containing realistic case simulations

3 case simulations presented as a serial drama incorporating digital and social media and interactive reflective elements delivered sequentially

Learners engage with the case simulation media, discuss and reflect on the events presented

Mentorship Simulation Package can be used to assess the learners’ ability to make a sign-off decision based on all the evidence presented
