The Little Things Ten years ago this July, my grandfa-ther, Weikko Aho died. He was 88, one of The Greatest Generation and beloved by many. He had lived a good life, and fought through many difficul-ties. My grandfather devoted himself to his family, his church, and his gar-den. We all still love him very much. One of the things I remember from the funeral is my dad and his brother’s appreciation for all who took the time to come to the funeral home and greet the family at the visitation. It was a small thing to those who took the time to wait in line and speak to our family, but it meant so much to have all of those who Weikko had touched, come back and offer kind words of apprecia-tion. I hear the same thing from fami-lies from our church and community when they experience the loss of a beloved family member. Attending a visitation, gathering for a funeral, or bring food by the house all seem like little things when we try to support a grieving family. It is simple to show up and bring chicken. It is im-portant to be present even though we know we cannot fix the grief that oth-ers are experiencing. And in such times, attending to the little things is important. As Christian people who connect through the church, I think, and hope, we work hard to do the little, small, simple things well. Though we cannot do everything perfectly every day, sometimes a call comes at the right time. Other times a card finds its way to the mailbox on the just the right day. And in so many other countless ways like calls, greetings, pats on the back or hugs in the hallway, it is in these little things that we find the love, support, kindness, and grace that makes a congregation a church and not just a group that gather when it is convenient. This week is the beginning of summer. For the next eight to ten weeks, some-one will be on vacation, others will be
for some time on the beach. As a con-gregation, we will be more scattered across the state than we normally are and for many reasons, this is great. We need the change of pace. We benefit from a change of scenery. And we are blessed by time away with friends and family. But, as we go, may we never forget the little things. May we remem-ber the love, support, kindness and grace that others need back home. May we remember that though we carry our bodies and many, many, suit-cases to other places, our family of faith is still at home. And may we re-member those things, we remember that it is the little things that help us love our home, love each other, and love the family of faith that is Oxford Baptist Church. This summer, let’s be sure we remember the little things for in them we find the power and pres-ence of God. Peace, Chris

Mission Opportunity
June 18th-24th As our own youth travel to perform mission work in Kentucky, other
youth will travel to perform mission work closer to home. Through
Rebuilding Hope’s “Service On Site” project, fifteen teams of youth
will work in Vance, Granville, Warren, and Franklin counties to help
poor and needy families. The work of these youth teams will be as fol-
lows:
Replace the roofs on twelve homes
Install handicap ramps on two homes
Replace hail-damaged siding on one home
Oxford Baptist Men are asking different organizations in our church to
support one of these teams by serving lunch and snacks at their work
site, a home in the Oak Hill community, where the roof of the home
will be replaced. The team will consist of approximately fifteen youth
and adults. On Sunday, June 19th, this team will join us for worship
and lunch in our church family center. All are welcome to join for
lunch. Thank you for offering hospitality to those who are helping oth-
ers. Please contact the church office of Steve Timberlake for more in-
formation.
