Week 4: Lower Back
Laura asks: Dr. Rita, I hurt my sacroiliac joint (low back) demonstrating how NOTto do an exercise while training instructors at the last retreat! I wasexplaining the difference between WholyFit's low risk "Helmet ofSalvation" back exercise and yoga's high risk "Cobra" posture. Idemonstrated that even though they look similar, the technique is verydifferent.
I hurt my back demonstrating what NOT to do: in "Yoga Cobra" thebody is on the ground, arms straight, head back- this does NOTconform to the safety standards of AFAA or ACSM for generalpopulation group exercise classes. I had to put ice on it immediatelyand two months later it's still not healed completely! Right in the leftdimple of my lower hip area it feels like a grissly lump. My firstquestion is: why would a sacroiliac injury cause constipation?
