Green IT ?!?

“Green IT Gains Priority Status”

“Make Al Gore Proud: Go Green!”

“Intel Unveils…Green Technology”

“Wal-Mart to set Sustainability Standards”

“5 Steps to Green IT”“Green IT Now More than Ever!”

The Status Quo

• “Typical” 5,000 sq. ft. data center:• > 1,100 kilowatts (more than 1 megawatt!)• Running 24x7• Energy Cost: $750,000 - $1MM annually

• Typical PC: 600-1000 kWh annually• Up to $150 a year per PC!

Where are we Headed?• Driven by demand for computing & storage

capacity, and more desktops• Increasing by 12% annually• Nationally as much as $3.3 billion:

• 53 billion kWh

• 64.7 million metric tons of CO2

• Equal to 13 million automobiles

• Will double by 2011

Fact: No Universal Metric For Data Center Output

In the absence of this metric, discussing data systems energy efficiency is not meaningful. We can only talk about reducing

data systems energy consumption.

Measuring Efficiency

Applies to servers and workstations alike!

Roadblocks

• “I don’t care!” or “Not on my network!”• IT Department vs. Facilities Department• “I don’t know how!”

Energy Efficiency Emerging as a Top Concern of Data Center ManagersAlong with Power, Cooling & Space Constraints & Availability

What are your top facility / network concerns?

How We Begin

• Start with simple initiatives

• Look at ongoing projects

• Consider new technologies

• Make it part of your process!

Tools

• Billing history

• Submetering

• Benchmarking – metrics

• Major manufacturer website tools

• Focus on Energy: calculators, tools, expertise

Technology Opportunities

• Virtualization – Consolidation• Network PC Power Management• Energy Star standard-based systems• High Efficiency Power Supplies & UPS• High Efficiency Cooling Systems• Intelligent control systems

Green IT Leadership

• IT and Facilities working together

• Looking at every opportunity

• Making energy important

• Working with Focus on Energy

What is Focus on Energy?

• Wisconsin’s statewide energy efficiency and renewable energy program

• Aimed at increasing Wisconsin’s energy independence by helping residents and businesses implement efficiency and renewable energy projects

• Focus works with businesses of all types, including the commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors, as well as schools and government

Why Energy Efficiency?

• In today’s tough economic climate, businesses cannot afford to overlook energy efficiency• Reduce operational costs• Opportunity to reduce the state’s carbon footprint• Energy efficiency gives your company a competitive

advantage• It’s the right thing to do

• Focus on Energy is here to help you improve your bottom line!

Energy Efficiency Success

• Since 2001, Focus has helped businesses around the state save more than $120 million in annual energy costs

• More than 56,000 businesses have participated in Focus

• More than 3,000 Wisconsin businesses partner with Focus to sell energy related goods and services (Market Providers)

Focus on Energy Services

• FREE Technical Assistance• Unbiased advice from experts• Industry expertise• Energy evaluations• Education and training sessions• Network of vendors and market providers

• Cash Incentives

Nationwide…

• Arizona Public Service• Austin (TX) Energy• Avista Utilities (ID, WA)• Bonneville Power

Administration• BC Hydro (Canada)• Efficiency Vermont• Energy Trust of Oregon• Eugene (OR) Electric• Idaho Power

• Los Angeles DWP• New York State (NYSERDA)• Oncor Electric (TX)• Pacific Gas & Electric• Puget Sound Energy (WA)• Sacramento• San Diego (Sempra)• Southern California Edison• Xcel Energy (MN, CO, etc.)• Wisconsin Focus on Energy

Typical Services Nationwide

• Data Center Design assistance• Data Center Audit assistance• Data Center Commissioning, Monitoring• Incentives for facilities measures

• Most are custom incentives requiring engineering calculations
