Awards
She participated in several national and international composition
competitions and awarded prizes for her works in New York,
Weimar, Vienna, Paris, Moscow, Plovdiv, Sofia, London, Tirana,
Zagreb, Athens and Thessaloniki.
Lina received the Baerenreiter prize for her work ‘CONtrust’, 2010.
Her chamber opera ‘The Expelled’ awarded and performed by the
Greek National Opera in Athens, 2012. Her chamber opera ‘Fear
&(s) the Love’ awarded and performed in Music Biennale in
Zagreb, 2015. She awarded with the title of “Young artist of the
year” from the Union of Critics of Music and Theater in Athens,
2008, and the prize of Association Franco Europeenne de l’Alto for
the work ‘Neuma’ (for solo viola), in Paris, 2014.
Her work ‘Chronographia’ was selected to participate at the
workshop of Arditti Quartet in Guidhall School of Music and
Drama in London, 2014. Also, Lina’s work ‘Kivos‘ for 12
violoncellos, performed in Musikverein as a prize of the Kom-
position Wettebewerb from the Kunsthaus Muerz, in Vienna, 2013.
She has been participating in composition competitions aquiring
prizes for her works. Some of the competitions she won, are: the
4th International Jurgenson Composition Competition 2007 in
Moscow (1st prize), the 2nd International Ivan Spassov
Composition Competition 2007 in Plovdiv, (3rd prize), the Greek
Children Opera Festival 2008 in Thessaloniki, (3rd prize), the 2nd
International Ton de Leeuw Composition Competition 2008 in
Tirana, (3rd prize), the 11th International Via Nova Composition
Competition 2010 in Weimar, (2nd prize), the Golden Key
International Composition Competition 2010 in Vienna, (3rd prize),
the 7th International Composition Competition Young Virtuosos
2011 in Sofia, (1st prize), the 2nd International Composition
Competition Nicolay Myaskovksy 2012 in Moscow, (3rd prize).
Selected compositionsof Lina Tonia
Education
She studied composition (Bachelor and Master degree) at the
Department of Music Studies in Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki with professor Christos Samaras. Furthermore, Lina
completed a PhD in composition in Edinburgh University (2008 –
2012) with professor Nigel Osborne and Michael Edwards, where
she was studying with a Greek National Scholarship from Union
of Greek Composers (2008 – 2009) and IKY Foundation (2009 –
2011). She studied composition (Master degree) with Michael
Jarrell at the Vienna University (2012 – 2013).
Career
Lina worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Music Theory &
Composition with a fellowship of Research Committee of Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki.
She is a member of International Alliance for Women in Music
(IAWM) and also of Greek Composer‘s Union. She is jury member
in International Academy of Performing Arts and Sciences
ENKOR.
Lina teaches composition at the Department of Music Art &
Science of the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki.
Compositions
Lina worked for her works with many ensembles and orchestras
including the Arditti Quartet, the London Contemporary
Orchestra, the Jalas Chamber Orchestra, the Edinburgh Quartet,
the Alea III ensemble, the Hebrides ensemble, the ensemble
Marges, the Dissonart ensemble,the Greek National Opera,
the State Orchestra of Athens, the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki
and broadcasted on BBC Radio3.
Her fifth string quartet premiered in Wien Modern 2015 by the
Arditti Quartet, in Vienna, Konzerthaus Mozartsaal, 2015. Also, she
was invited as guest composer to the 15th Piano Campus
Competition in Cergy Pontoise 2016, where her piano concerto
‘Les Mondes Flottants’ commissioned to be premiered on the
final stage of the piano competition from the finalists.
