Vol. 4 No. 1 FALL 2011
Florence
School
Christian
September 11, 2011 marked the 10th
anniversary of the day that America was
attacked on her own soil by the evil acts of terrorism. In spite of the
tragedy, Americans united in faith, and prayer and displayed the heart of
patriotism.
Ten years later, our
students chose to remem-
ber that day and honor
local firefighters for their
service to our community.
It was recorded that 343
firefighters lost their lives
on 911 in serving their
community. FCS stu-
dents presented a special
911 chapel that included songs to honor our nation and a tribute to the
firefighters. Alumnus Thomas Moye and senior Rachel King presented
a monologue based on a true story of a NYC fire captain who had to
write the eulogies of the eight firefight-
ers in his battalion who died on that
tragic day.
FBT Children’s Ministry Director Amy Giles and her sons
Jarrett and Jamison shared their hearts from the perspective
of a firefighter’s family.
Principal Jim Berry acknowledged and thanked the firefighters for their
service to our community.
FCS welcomes three new teachers to the faculty: Melissa
Roeder, Cris Averette and Megan Kendall. Mrs. Roeder
teaches P.E. and will serve as an assistant coach in volley-
ball and girls basketball. Mr. Averette teachs 10th grade
English. Mrs. Kendall teaches music for Kindergarten and
lower elementary grades. She also teaches drama and music
appreciation classes for secondary grades. We are blessed
to have these new additions to our faculty.
Mrs. Roeder Mr. Averette
Mrs. Kendall
Following the Chapel,
Mrs. Bryant, Mrs. Ev-
ans and Mrs. Kendall
delivered homemade
goodies and cards made
by elementary students
and parents to the local
fire stations and Howe
Springs. FCS will not
forget 911!
The October

has been cancelled.
“Celebrating 40 Years”
A Ministry of the Florence Baptist Temple
This is definitely a landmark year for
FCS. In May, we graduated our 1000th
student, and this school year marks our
40th year. I am especially fortunate to
have been here since the beginning.
There have been many challenges, but
the rewards have been far greater. I want
to thank each of you for sending your
child (children) here. I know many of
you make sacrifices—especially in these financially difficult
times. Let me encourage you by saying that if you are going to
sacrifice, the foundation is the most important place to do so—
if you want the building to be sound.
Let me also thank Jim Berry, Sandy Bryant, Scotty
Keefe, Jimmy Miles, Nina Bohler and Doreen Miles for their
administrative leadership, as well as our entire faculty. I am
grateful for each of them.
Christian education is unique. It is not only concerned with
the education of the intellect, but also the education of the
heart. The other day, a young man had some very important
spiritual questions. He went to one of our faculty, Byron
Jones, and later made a decision to give his life to Christ as a
result of that conversation. Afterward, he commented about
how much confidence he had in Mr. Jones because of
the way he relates to the students. I hear these kinds of
stories regularly and thank the Lord that we have a school
where Christ is honored. May it always be so.

“Celebrating 40 years” I have had the privilege of being
involved with Florence Christian
School since the late 70’s. My parents
made the decision to enroll me in FCS
as a first grader so that I could receive
an excellent education in a Christian environ-
ment. I graduated from FCS in 1988, earned my college degree from
Liberty University, and returned to FCS to teach high school math and
coach soccer and basketball in 1993. This marks my ninth year serving
in the role as Principal.
The Lord has really blessed FCS through the years. God led Pastor
Bill Monroe to establish a Christian School in August 1972. That year,
FCS employed five faculty and staff members and enrolled 54 children
in kindergarten through 3rd grade. Each year FCS added a new grade
until the first graduating class received their diplomas in 1979. On May
20, 2011, FCS reached a milestone as it saw the 1000th student receive
her diploma. FCS has reached another milestone as it opened its doors
for the 40th consecutive year. We have grown to 50 faculty/staff mem-
bers with over 730 students enrolled in K3-12th grades.
As we reflect on the 40 years, I count it a great blessing and opportu-
nity to work with young people whether through the role as an adminis-
trator or teaching them in the classroom. It is very rewarding to see our
students that go on to live successful lives that honor and glorify the
Lord Jesus Christ.

The student government was busy this summer pre-
paring for the 2011-2012 school year. In July, Chris
Coker, Seth Harrelson, and Alyssa Holbrooks
served with the SCISA state officers to hold a ―team
building‖ day for SCISA student government officers. The meeting
was held at Heathwood Hall in Columbia. Other FCS student repre-
sentatives included Zach Anderson, Emily Ham, and Elizabeth
Chard. Two teachers, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Nesbit, accompanied
the students.
In September, Chris, Seth, and Alyssa conducted a SCISA
fall conference that was held in the State House. Student representa-
tives from all the SCISA schools were in attendance. They met to go
over the state agenda for this school year. Moriah Berry, Kristin
Bryant and Austin Johnson attended as FCS representatives. Mrs.
Bryant accompanied the students.
The entire student government has been busy working to-
gether with their classes to prepare for the Homecoming 2011. They
are leading their classes in the preparation of their class floats. They
will be involved in a number of projects throughout this school year.

The kindergarten and elementary
spiritual emphasis this year is
based on Joel 1:3... Tell ye your
children of it, and let your chil-
dren tell their children and their
children another generation.
Elementary chapels are broken
into upper (4th-6th) and lower (1st
-3rd) grades in order to teach on a more age appropriate level. We are very
blessed to have the leadership of FBT’s Children’s Ministry Director Amy
Giles on board. Mrs. Giles is very instrumental in challenging our young
people’s hearts.
‘A Time for Everything' is our
theme for the elementary students
this year at FCS. The focus is to
bring our true American Christian
heritage to the hearts and minds of
our students. Patriotism is not a
feeling but a deep love for our
country. A patriot is then someone
who loves his country, believes in
it, defends it and protects it. Our
look back at the beginning of Amer-
ica and during the Revolutionary War era will be a great adventure this
year for every student. It is important for children to understand that many
of the Founding Fathers were deeply rooted in their faith of Jesus
Christ. The Elementary Revival in September was just the beginning of a
year long journey where we will study God's Word and our American his-
tory together. I look forward to working with our teachers and students as
we discover 'A Time for Everything'!
Kindergarten teachers weekly present a lesson in
chapel that focuses on the ABC’s of America and the
monthly character trait. They will travel through the al-
phabet with a patriotic focus that parallels with Biblical
principles. Two little doll friends, Sadie and Sully, join
the young cadets in their journey each week. The 3 and
4/5K chapels are a time of reciting pledges, songs, and a
lesson that challenges even our youngest minds.
We invite parents to visit any of our chapels and join our young people
on the journey back in time to Colonial America and the study of God’s
Word!
Thank you to David and Tabatha Lawson
for their skills and creativity with our main
hall patriotic display. Scott McArthur and
G.C. Hatchell, we appreciate your assistance
with the other decorations.
WOW! Thank you FCS families for your
support and hard work in this year’s annual
candy and coupon book fundraiser. Due to
your diligent effort, we achieved our fund-
raising goal of $55,000. As a result of your
hard work, we will be given an extra day out
of school on Wednesday, November 23,
2011. Candy is still available for purchase in
the office.
Last year, several young girls,
teens and FCS moms donated over
200 inches of hair to the national
organization Children with Hair
Loss. This event was sponsored by
the Student Government. We will
be doing this service project again
in the spring. Any FCS young girl, teen or mom may participate by
growing her hair to a minimum of 8‖ long. The hair must be natural
with no color treatment. The hair donations will be made into wigs for
children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagno-
sis.
The special ―hair cutting‖ event will be held in May for the partici-
pating FCS girls, teens, and moms. They will be treated with a hair-
cut and a fun time of fellowship! More details will be coming but for
now...begin to ―grow‖ those locks!

Thank You!

gathered to watch the juniors receive their
class rings. Junior Class Officers Frankie
Slemmer, Kristin Bryant, Hanna Adams
and James McClary led the ceremony
with individual speeches
followed by the receiving
of the rings and a photo
session. This day marked
another milestone in the
life of these high school
juniors!
FCS students will honor veterans in the fifth
annual A Salute to Veterans, Thursday, Novem-
ber 10th, 9:00 AM in the FBT Worship Center.
This is our gift to the community; we invite veter-
ans and their families to join us.
Kindergarten and elementary students will present
our annual Christmas Concert, Friday, December
16th, 9:00 AM in the FBT Worship Center.
Students will take us back in to the colonial period
and how families celebrated Christmas. Family and
friends are invited to join in this Colonial Christmas

The fourth grade went buggy with their Science
insect projects! They were very creative in present-
ing a variety of
insects that capti-
vated viewers
with their array
of interesting
themes.
All About Me... Five-year-olds ―LOVE TO
TALK‖, so what better way to
get them to get over the new
school jitters than talking
about all the people, things and
places they like. It is also a
great avenue to introduce them
to public speaking. In Septem-
ber, the walls outside Mrs.
Langnecker’s and
Mrs. Nesbit’s 5K
classes were adorned
with the artwork and
stories of these young
students. They were
quite captivating!
