Five weird but wearable computers
While there has been some (perhaps Borg-
inspired) work done in implanted (in our bodies)
computing, wearable computers are much closer
to becoming mainstream.
Not only are several vendors working on products,
it’s also a great do-it-yourself project.
So while we wait for the wearable computing
revolution, here are five weird wearable
computing prototypes that are blazing a wacky
trail.

I’ve been unable to source this photo,
found on an Internet message board, but it
just had to be shared.
I’m not sure how this computer is being
balanced, never mind worn successfully.
Hope it’s not running Windows, as reaching
back to reboot that often would be torture.
On the plus side, it looks like a great
shoulder workout.

If you’ve ever felt using your smartphone to navigate around the city is too user-friendly, that
looking at your phone while walking isn’t distracting enough, and that you don’t own enough
pairs of insanely expensive shoes, then check out these “No Place Like Home” GPS Shoes.
After programming your route into the shoes via USB at home, LED lights guide your way. Just

On the surface, there’s nothing weird about
the BioHarness 3 from Zephyr Technology.
It straps around the chest and uses Smart
Fabric sensor technology to capture
physiological data on the wearer and transmit
it via Bluetooth, and it has definite
applications in athletic training.
It does kind of make you look like Tony Stark
though, doesn’t it?

Why yes, that is a keyboard on my pants.
With Yanko Design’s wearable keyboard, you
always have a wireless keyboard close at hand.
With the keyboard’s location though, you’d be
wise to be careful when you’re reaching for
the space bar.
The manufacturer also touts a pair of “crotch-
rocking speakers.”
Now where’d I leave that mouse…

A NASA engineer took wearable
computing to a new place with his iPad
Halloween costume.
An old sweater, some fake blood, and
two iPads running a FaceTime chat with
one another and voila, he appeared to
have a hole in his chest.
Although, to make it even spookier, it
could have used Windows tablets…scary!
