They accepted the authority of Haggai’s word (1:12-13).

They acknowledged their fear of the Lord (1:12).

They allowed their spirits to be stirred (1:14).

“They came & worked on the house of the Lord of host, their God” (1:14).

“Consider – give careful thought to – your ways” (Hag 1:5, 7).

BUILDING GOD’S HOUSE

Hope for the Discouraged

Haggai 2:1-9

3 Reasons we get discouraged when building God’s House

The Work Seems Small.

The Work Is Hard.

The Work Is Long.

Remedy for discouragement

Right Attitude: Be Strong (Hag 2:4).

Right Action: Work (2:4).

Right Reason: His Presence (2:4, 5).

Right Outcome: The Work You Do For The Lord’s House Will Last (Hag 2:6-9; Heb 12:26-28; 1 Cor 15:58).

BUILDING GOD’S HOUSE

Seek His Righteousness

Haggai 2:10-19

God only blesses the holy

Jesus: “Seek first…” (Matt 6:33).

“The Kingdom Of God”: Haggai 1 – “Make God’s House your priority.”

“His Righteousness”: Haggai 2:10-19 – “God only blesses the holy.”

Contamination of sin

Is Holiness Contagious (2:12)? NO!

Is Sin Contagious (2:13-14)? YES!

Achan (Josh 7:10-15)

Ananias & Sapphira (Acts 5:11, 14)

Household Utensils (2 Tim 2:20-21)

Consequence of sin

Emptiness (2:15-17).

Example:

Corinth (1 Cor 11:30-31)

King David (Psa 32:3-5, 1-2)

Remedy for sin

Remembrance. “Carefully consider” (2:15, 18).

Remember your emptiness.

Repentance. “From this day forward” (2:15, 18, 19).

Seek His righteousness

“All these things shall be added to you” (Matt 6:33)

Hag 2:1919 Is the seed still in the barn? As yet the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yielded fruit. But from this day I will bless you.'"

BUILDING GOD’S HOUSE

“Take Courage…I Will Accomplish My Purpose Through You.”

Haggai 2:20-23

Haggai: A Summary

Strong Challenge (1:1-15)

Strong Encouragement (2:1-9)

Strong Command (2:10-19)

Strong Assurance (2:20-23)

What keeps us working on God’s house?

God’s Promises To Zerubbabel:

“I will” (2:20-23; Isa 14:24; 46:8-11).

To Us:

“I will be with you”(Matt 28:18-20).

“I have given them” (John 17:20-23).

What keeps us working on God’s house?

God’s Power For Zerubbabel:

“Shake, Overthrow, Destroy” (2:20-23).

For Us:

His Spirit (Zech 4:6-10; Rom 8:9-11; Eph 3:16-17; Phil 4:13).

His Word (Eph 6:10, 17).

What keeps us working on God’s house?

God’s Choice Was Zerubbabel:

“Like a signet ring” (2:23).

We Are Chosen “In Christ”:

Bear fruit (John 15:16). Come out of the world (John 15:19). Be holy (Eph 1:4). For salvation (2 Thess 2:13). By God (1 Pet 2:4). Generation (1 Pet 2:9).

What keeps us working on God’s house?

God’s Choice was Jesus:

Jesus leads God’s people out of captivity (Eph 4:8; Heb 2:15).

Jesus oversees the building of God’s house (Matt 16:18; Eph 1:22-23).

Lessons from Haggai for us:

God’s work must not be neglected.

1. Set aside personal ambitions (ch. 1).

2. Overcome excuses (ch. 2).

3. Purify the heart (ch. 3).

4. Trust God implicitly (ch. 4).

Theme verse (Hag 2:4; Matt 6:33).

God’s purpose will prevail (1 Cor 15:58)!
