Established 3 Subcommittees –Veterans in Crisis, Programs, Comms
The Fire Watch Council was formed by Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns Counties in November 2019 pursuant to Section 163.01, Florida Statutes, to coordinate regional efforts to reduce military veteran suicides in Northeast Florida.
Each County contributed seed funding and a Council Member
Established 2 standing committees -Rules, Finance
Must comply with Florida Sunshine laws
The Structure
Vision Beliefs Mission Values
End veteran suicide in Northeast Florida.
Reinforce the 5-county area as the most military
and veteran-friendly community in the U.S.
We believe that the more opportunities we can provide to alter a
veteran’s unique trajectory toward acute crisis, the lower we can
drive the rate of veteran suicide.
Build a 10,000+ peer-to-peer, early intervention
veteran network designed to pre-empt crisis
conditions by connecting veterans to each other and to the community resources available to
them. We will also identify and shore up weaknesses in the community’s crisis care continuum in order
to prevent veteran suicide.

More detail on next charts
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has developed the Crisis Intercept Mapping process for Military and Veteran Suicide Prevention.
This helps communities identify weakness and strengthen the delivery of evidence-based suicide prevention policies and crisis care practices.
The Fire Watch invited SAMHSA to deliver a 2-day workshop on April 15/16 in Northeast Florida. This has been postponed to June or July due to coronavirus.
Participants will include first responders, health care providers, mental health providers, military representatives and veteran service organizations from all 5 counties.
The output from this workshop will become part of the data and evidence set that The Fire Watch will use to create, launch track and assess new outreach and coordination programs as well as future grants.

Watch Stander Program
A peer-to-peer program designed to connect veterans to each other and to crisis and pre-crisis resources
Goal is to establish kinship and destigmatize that asking for help is a sign of weakness
The program will be non-clinical … we are mobilizing peers to watch out for, and reach out to, each other
• We are not building a mental health organization
We will also identify and help ‘hidden populations’ of disconnected veterans, including rural veterans, homeless veterans and transient veterans passing through Northeast Florida
Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) will be our partners
• We will not replicate what VSOs do, but rather direct veterans in need to them
We will also bring a sense of purpose to veterans … ‘veterans watching out for veterans’

Watch Stander Pledge Non-Veterans
• Civilian ‘Veteran Champions’ are welcome and invited to be Watch Standers
• Must pass all requirements of a Watch Stander but with the following additions:
Must take an extra 20 min course design for civilians to learn how to speak to military members, veterans and their families

I pledge to make it my mission to Stand Watch for myself and others in order to prevent veteran suicide.
I will regularly connect with my fellow veterans and be vigilant to their concerns.
I will create an environment where asking for help and reaching out to others is a sign of strength.
I will reach out to a fellow veteran when I sense concern and ask, “How can I help?”
I will familiarize myself with the veteran resources available to me and others.
I will consult with a professional if I believe a veteran in need requires assistance.
I understand that, by standing watch for myself and others, I am helping to save lives.
