residents in Finland• Lower stage comprehensive school takes six

years, classes 1-6, ages from 7 to 12

• Upper stage comprehensive school, classes 7-9

• additional teaching is available for one year after basic education, 10th class• It’s free

for everyone

Vocational education institutions and upper secondary schools

• Both usually take three years• After vocational education you are

qualificated to work in profession you have studied

• At the end of the upper secondary school the students take a matriculation examination which gives you better opportunities to become accepted into institutes of higher education

• Every year about 30 000 students graduate from upper secondary school

Universities and Institutes of higher education

• Polytechnic qualification usually takes between 3.5 and 4.5 years

• A matriculation examination or a basic upper secondary level vocational qualification is required to get into a polytechnic

• University usually takes 5 or more years• Matriculation examination is the easiest way

to get into the university• After higher education you can get a

doctorate
