“Crash the Superbowl” is a nation-wide contest that challenges

America to produce a Doritos commercial that will air during the

Superbowl. While fame and bragging rights would be enough

incentive for most, the real prize is the $1,000,000 reward given

to the makers of the favorite commercial. This year, the members of

ComM 304 also entered the competition. The team of eight was

divided into four realms of responsibility. Of course, as this was a

group project, we all tried to assist each other in whatever way we

could. The journey started with a white erase board-- but after weeks

of strategizing, filming, editing, and repeating several steps along the

way, we have produced a commercial that makes us proud.

background:Doritos is a brand of tortilla chip that is produced by the Frito-Lay company since 1964. Doritos chips are sold worldwide in assorted flavors and are one of the most popular snack items in the United States. The flavors include that Doritos produces are: Nacho Cheese, Cool Ranch, Salsa Verde, Rappin’ Jalepeño and more. Doritos is well known for its Super Bowl commercials, where it holds a competition for fans to create a commercial to air in front of the Super Bowl. This competition is called “Crash the Super Bowl.”

key problem:With the Super Bowl being flooded with commercials, Doritos needs a commercial that will stand out amongst the other commercials.

objectives:• Produceahumorouscommercial• Thecommercialmustbeoneofthefinalist• ThecommercialmustwintheCrashtheSuperBowlcontest• ThecommercialmuststandoutamongstalltheSuperBowladclutter

marketing strategies for accomplishing objectives:To accomplish the objectives will have to make sure the punch lines are funny, and that men will find it hilarious. Focusing on men is important, because more men watch the Super Bowl than women, and these men are between the ages of 18-45. The medium to use is television. The focus of the commercial needs to be Doritos, and that this commercial is unique and doesn’t blend in with other TV commercials.

Target Audience:Our target audience are men between the ages of 18-45 that make $25,000-$75,000 a year. These men have graduated from high school and have at least some college education. Most of these men are married and have kids living with them. These people are eccentric and love inviting people over to their houses.

Key Message:The main message we need to send is that Doritos is the supreme snack food of choice. That bringing Doritos to a party will bring life to the party.

Executional Mandatories and Considerations:Television Commercial must:• Becomical• Beexactly30secondslong• NotcontainanythingdeemedinappropriatetoHardingUniversity• HaveDoritosinthecommercial

Key Deliverables:There is only one key deliverable in this campaign. Television is the only medium that can meet the objectives.

Tone and Colors the Communications should have• Red• Orange• Yellow• Upbeat• Fun

Broadcast Advertising Class at Harding University is Entering Doritos Crash the Super Bowl Contest

Harding University class transforms into an advertising team. These junior and senior level students are planning, creating and entering an original commercial for the chance to be featured during the 2011 Super Bowl. Searcy, Arkansas October 15, 2010 A team of nine students in the broadcast advertising class at Harding University are entering the Doritos Crash the Super bowl Contest in hopes of becoming one of the finalists. The Doritos Crash the Super Bowl Contest will ultimately select three finalists, based on originality and creativity, adherence to creative assignment and the overall appeal. Those finalists’ commercials will be shown during the Super Bowl. The team consists of two of each of the following: producers, pre-production planners, art directors and post-production editors. The COMM 304 team has already come up with a concept for the commercial and will begin shooting on Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010. Once the commercial is shot team members will edit the footage and submit it to be judged by Nov. 15. This hands on, real world experience is very unique and if you are interested in covering this story you are more than welcome to send either a reporter or photographer to the video shoot this Sunday at 3pm at 129 Indian Trail Dr. If no one can attend, photographs can be provided.
