Project OverviewThe North Terminal

Redevelopment (NTR) Project was a planned 26-gate terminal complex designed to replace the airport’s older Davey, Berry & Smith terminal complex.

Airport Fun FactsThe new facility encompasses 824,000 square

feet and is about .75 miles in length or the equivalent of a 160 story building.

There are over 150 communication cabinets distributed between more than 36 telecommunication rooms (Special Systems Rooms).

Fiber Fun FactsThe backbone fiber consists

of both single-mode and laser optimized 50mm cables.There are almost 6000 SC

connectors terminating over 500 miles of fiber strands.

Sumitomo Airblown fiber isused for all major backbones.There are over 50 Siemon 72-port fiber panels in the Main SSR alone!

Network Electronics Fun FactsIn the base building

(supporting Wayne County Airport Authority only) there are over 50 Cisco switches providing 2400 ports of powered Ethernet connectivity.

Each switch is connected with redundant fiber connections back to 2 main core switches.

Copper Backbone Fun FactsThere are more than

9000 pairs of copper phone backbone pairs which equates into over 900 miles of copper pairs.Enough copper

pairs to go from the Detroit Metro Airport to the Dallas Airport!

Paging Fun Facts

•The paging system has over 1600 speakers throughout the project.•Speakers in the concourse are controlled with ambient sound sensors that adjust the volume based on the background noise.•Select gates utilize IP microphones for local announcements.

The Technology CablingEnd to end Siemon

connectivity utilizing MapIT patch panels for all category 6 data connections.

Voice connections are also category 6 and terminate on a Siemon S210 style block.

Over 700,000 feet of high performance Siemon Category 6 4-pair cable has been installed.

The Details!Fluke test equipment

was utilized for certification of both copper and fiber.

iTRACS software was utilized for as-builts and documentation.

Typical SSR / Raised Floor

Multi User Flight Information Display (MUFID)Over 150 displays are utilized

to inform the public as to flight schedule and to enhance the service level provided by the airlines.

MUFIDS are used for departure and arrival information in addition to baggage carousel identification.

Each gate has a 40” display for airline information.

Common Use Passenger Processing System (CUPPS)Ferndale has deployed all

the computers, printers and monitors for the Wayne County common use ticket counters and gates.

This includes baggage tags, airline tickets and scanners at each gate.

We also deployed CUSS (Common Use Self Service) kiosk stations.
