Completion Flow Control

Flow Control is the ability to regulate or prevent the flow of fluids or gases in the wellbore, and flow controls are the devices used to perform those functions. Flow control is required throughout the life of the well:! at the initial completion ! during the producing /injection life

Flow Regulation Flow controls are used to regulate or prevent flow, during the operational life of the well, often for very long periods. These include:! Zone isolation ! Reducing or increasing production or ! Safety systems safety valves or injection ! Fluid loss control

injection flow valves

of the well ! whenever wellbore intervention is required ! At workover time

The flow control process is often underestimated, and flow control design frequently under-engineered, leading to unnecessarily costly intervention operations. Weatherford Completion Services offers a very wide range of flow control products backed by the operational expertise necessary to ensure that flow control selection reflects the needs of the well throughout its life cycle, and not just at completion time. Barriers Many flow controls are barriers to flow in the wellbore. They can be either bidirectional or uni-directional and in some cases both. Flow control barriers are used for:! ! ! ! !

Flow regulation devices require the twin virtues of long term reliability and simplicity of operation. Pressure Testing Flow controls are used for all wellbore pressure testing to:! Confirm the integrity of completion and ! Confirm the integrity of XMAS Trees ! Set packers

its components

Under-balanced completion Well suspension Zone plugging Safe removal of XMAS trees or BOP's Recovery of upper completions during workover

Flow control barriers must be designed to withstand all potential hazards.

Weatherford Flow Control Structure

Weatherford Flow Control Structure Weatherford divides the Flow Control product line in the following groups: Interventionless Completion Products Weatherford Interventionless Completion Products system is a grouping of tools which perform Flow Control functions (barriers, fluid loss control, packer setting) without the need for a specific intervention in the well bore on wireline, coil tubing or other means. Slickplug The Weatherford Slickplug is a retrievable bridge plug deployed and retrieved on slickline, or other intervention means that do not require explosive or pyrotechnic setting tools.

Sliding sleeves Weatherford Sliding sleeves are tubing mounted devices which regulate flow from or into individual producing zones, or to control communication between the tubing and the annulus. Standard flow controls Weatherford Standard Flow Controls comprise a wide range of industry standard flow control devices, including nipples, lock mandrels, plugs, standing valves and every accessory for those items. Standard Flow Controls are the appropriate choice for conventional, economical, flow control requirements. Uniset flow controls The Weatherford Uniset System is a high performance, high pressure, premium flow control system to suit exacting completion architecture.

Slickplug

The Weatherford Slickplug is a retrievable bridge plug designed from the outset to be deployed and retrieved on slickline, or other intervention means that do not require explosive or pyrotechnic setting tools. The development of monobore completions by Operators led to the requirement for a reliably retrievable bridge plug. This type of bridge plug quickly found additional applications in certain non-monobore type completions where the use of, or access to, nipple profiles was compromised. The plugs initially developed for these type of applications were deployed on electric line and set using explosive or pyrotechnic devices. Monobore completions, and more especially nipple-less completions require the relatively frequent use of this type of bridge plug. The requirement for electric line equipment and personnel for such deployments incurs major operating costs. The Slickplug, by virtue of being installed and retrieved on slickline, eliminates the need for expensive electric line services. Operation ! The plug itself consists of 5 basic components: ! The Upper slips ! The Element ! The Lower Slips and set/uniset mechanism ! The Drag Mechanism ! The Load Transfer Sleeve

10

Slickline Deployment The tool is run on a conventional slickline tool string. In the running position both sets of slips are retracted. Once lowered close to setting depth the plug is picked up. Lowering the plug again will set the lower slips. They can be retracted again by picking up the plug. This allows repeated pick-up and set-down of the plug to determine depth correlation. Once the lower slips are set and the plug lowered on to them, downward jarring sets the upper slips and partially expands the element. Once the upper slips are set, upward jarring will shear the load transfer sleeve. This allows the jarring force to be transferred to the element itself and not through the slips into the tubing wall. Continued upward jarring will fully energise the element. Finally the running tool is sheared off the plug. The plug is now set and can be tested. Retrieval of the Slickplug with a standard wireline pulling tool and pulling probe requires only light downward jarring to achieve collapse of the element and retraction of the upper slips. Some time is allowed for the element to fully relax before pulling out of hole. Before recovery to surface, the set/uniset mechanism is cycled to ensure that the bottom slips will open should the plug be dropped for any reason (e.g. wire break) on the way out of the hole. Hydrostatic Setting Tool Deployment For deployments where slickline jar action is not possible, or where depth control requirements demand an electric line deployment with CCL/GR instruments, hydrostatic setting tools are available for the Slickplug. These tools use well pressure

to power a compound piston which when tripped, provides the necessary setting force to set the plug. The most sophisticated of these devices includes a battery powered (two AA cells) timer, with an external switch, that can be reset in-hole if desired. The HST is ideal for Slickplug deployments to suspend downhole pressure gauges or other instrumentation. Short versions of the Slickplug, with the drag spring set/unset mechanism removed, are in development to take advantage of the HST capabilities.

SlickplugThe Weatherford Petroline Slickplug was developed in response to the oil and gas industry move towards Mono-bore well designs. The initial driver behind the development was to design a bridge plug suitable for slickline setting using mechanical manipulation alone. This was designed to reduce operational costs associated with electric line and remove the need for radio silence when using explosives. To cater for applications where depth control or high angle access became necessary coiled tubing, drill pipe and electric line setting adaptors have been developed allowing the user total flexibility. The use of a standard base Slickplug assembly in conjunction with slip or full option kit reduces inventory costs. The Slickplug has an extensive and fully documented run history with an enviable reliability record.

Slickplug H Bottom Equalizing AssemblyThe Weatherford Uniset H-Type Slickplug Equalizing Assembly is a conventional two run equalizing system comprising of a Housing, which fits below the lock mandrel, and an Equalizing Prong. The Equalizing Prong incorporates dual centralizers. The upper is fixed permanently and the lower is shear pinned in place. This assists both centralization into the housing and protects the elastomeric seals from wear and damage as they are lowered into the wellbore. When the plug body is encountered, light downward jarring shears the lower retaining pin, allowing the sealing prong to move downward through the centralizer to the sealed position. All sealing prongs are supplied with QLS or Sucker Rod threads, which allows the insertion of spacer bars (stem) to extend the prongs when required for high debris conditions. A Junk/Valve Catcher sub fitted with an internal fishing neck or a Dummy Rope Socket can easily be attached to the threaded or QLS top connection. To further assist in debris management the H-Bottom Housing can be extended on request.

Features! ! ! ! !Centralized equalizing prong QLS or Sucker Rod top connection as standard Junk Catcher tops supplied on request Large bore equalizing ports Bi-directional sealing

Benefits! !Protected seal when run in hole Positive equalization

Applications! ! !Completion or workover operations Tubing integrity testing Zonal isolation

SlickplugJunk Catchers

22

23

Slickplug - Junk CatchersThe Weatherford Petroline Slickplug system can be supplied with a variety of Junk Catcher subs. The junk catchers can be split into 3 distinct designs ! Top Set Junk Catcher The top set junk catcher is run separately from the slickplug and is utilised to prevent any junk or debris from entering the internals of the slickplug. The top set junk catcher is run and recovered using a standard GS or DU type pulling tool and is available in a short or long version. ! Bottom Junk Catcher The bottom junk catcher is run directly below the slickplug equalising assembly and allows for any junk or debris, which enters the slickplug to settle out below the equalising assembly. A single junk catcher is suitable for all sizes from 4 through 7. The bottom end junk catcher is also available with QLS connections to allow gauges or Spring Roller Centralizers to be attached to the bottom of the slickplug assembly. ! Sealing Junk Catcher The sealing junk catcher is utilised where debris or junk settlement is expected. The packing element forms a seal against the tubing or liner wall giving a positive debris seal preventing any ingress to the slickplug. The sealing junk catcher is normally utilised when production or well clean up will be performed above a slickplug.

Features! Available for all slickplug sizes ! Extensive range of lengths and types available as standard

Applications! All slickplug operations where potential for debris is evident.

SlickPlug Setting ToolsThe Weatherford Petroline Slickplug can be set utilizing a number of methods. For Slickline set operations where mechanical manipulation is required, a simple Mechanical Running Tool can be utilized. For 51/2 and larger Slickplugs a High Load Mechanical Setting Tool is utilized. Mechanical Setting Tool The Slickplug can be set using mechanical wireline manipulation alone. Conventional wireline jarring provides sufficient energy to fully pack-off the element. Once the J Slot mechanism has been activated setting the lower slips, downward jarring sets the top slips and partially compresses the element. Subsequent upward jarring fully compresses the element. Once fully set the running tool is sheared off and recovered to surface. High Load Mechanical Setting Tool The High Load Mechanical Setting Tool (MST) is used when setting 51/2and 7 Slickplugs where mechanical manipulation cannot provide sufficient element pack-off. The MST is hydraulically primed on surface although the tool itself contains no seals. When the Slickplug is located at its setting depth, mechanical jarring fires the MST releasing the stored energy. This provides the high force required to pack off the Slickplug element against the tubing wall. Surface Setting Adaptor Should the need arise to set a Slickplug on surface prior to completion installation, a hydraulically operated surface setting adaptor can be supplied on request.

Slickplug Probes & ProngsThe Weatherford Petroline Slickplug utilizes a variety of probes and prongs for differing functions. These fall into three separate categories. Pulling Probe The pulling probe is run together with a DU or GS type pulling tool to retrieve the slickplug following equalization. The probe engages the release mechanism of the plug, this frees the top slips and relaxes the element. The slickplug may then be easily picked off the bottom slips and recovered. Where the slickplug is to be pulled utilizing coiled tubing or drillpipe, a ported pulling probe is utilized in conjunction with a Flow Release DU or GS type pulling tool. This combination allows the internals of the slickplug to be washed clear of any debris prior to latching the flow release pulling tool. Equalizing Prong The Equalizing Prong is run to allow pressure equalization prior to pulling the Slickplug. Generally a separate equalizing trip is made before pulling the plug on Slickline. Combined pulling and equalizing prongs are routine when pulling the Slickplug on coiled tubing or drill pipe.

Standard Flow Controls

Weatherford Standard Flow Controls include a wide range of longestablished, industry standard flow control equipment, including nipples, lock mandrels, plugs, standing valves and every flow control accessory. Where the traditional components for the system fall short of current performance criteria, for example lock mandrels with hinged trailing dogs, Weatherford provides modern, fully engineered, retrofit equipment to suit the downhole nipple profile in question. Where a particular flow control item proves to provide superior performance, Weatherford has engineered that solution for use across the whole range of industry standard profiles, ensuring the best performance from the available technology. Standard Flow Controls are the appropriate choice for conventional, economical, flow control requirements. For high performance, high pressure, flow controls to suit exacting completion architecture, please refer to the Weatherford Uniset system. Systems Two separate systems are covered by Standard Flow Controls. The first is a fully selective (WX & WOR) and bottom no-go Each system comprises:

(WXN & WRN) system. The lock mandrels for this system are identified the same way as the equivalent landing nipple WX, WXN, WOR, WRN. The second is a top no-go (WF) and bottom no-go (WR) system. CLF & CLR Retrofit locks are available for WF & WR nipples. These are internal fishing neck, siton-the-no-go CL Lock Mandrels that take the same packing and same plug bottoms as the WX/WXN Locks allowing great efficiencies in inventory and operational flexibility. The running tool includes a telltale indicator to confirm correct installation. Consult your WCS Flow Control representative for more information. Includes blank cap Performance Criteria The pressure rating for all Weatherford Standard Flow Controls is 5,000 psi working pressure unless otherwise stated in the relevant Technical Data Book. Seal bore sizes are limited to traditional stepped increments for each tubing size and weight. The two standard material specifications are : ! AISI 4140 low alloy steel for standard service ! 9Cr-1Mo for sour service.
