Fast Food Nation Presentation

Chapter 6 By Tera Hutto

And Lynsey Young

The Author’s Intent

• To inform the reader of the current monopoly of the beef and poultry industry influenced by the fast food industry – McDonalds.

• To tell the reader how such monopolies are destroying the independent hard-working rancher

Major Assertions by Author

• The cattle and poultry industries are becoming large company oriented and many small town ranchers and poultry farmers are being shut out of business, or go bankrupt.

• The growers are determined and controlled by the processors, and many growers can not start a business without getting the consent of a processor.

Point Proven?

• Overall, the point made by the author was proven, and quite obvious to the general public if they take a look around at how the industry is shifting.

• As larger companies keep growing, the small town growers are going disappear over time because they can not keep up with advancing times.

Author Bias

• The author spoke to a hometown grower, which has his own opinion on how industries are shutting him down and that they are mistreating the small growers.

• The rancher (Hank) that the author spoke to committed suicide less then a year after he spoke with him. The stresses of maintaining a farm that was going downhill and supporting his family were too much for him to handle. The author may have related to this and found the subject more of a concern due to the serious actions that Hank had made.

Relevance

• As long as meat products remain at a fairly low price, the consumers are going to continue buying the cheaper products with no regard to the consequences for the hometown growers.

• The economy is such a big issue that man people will continue to struggle to find new ways of supporting themselves and their families.

The End!
