Fall 2016 Volume 2
2
I want to welcome you to the second edition of The Capitalist. In this edition, I want to share and cele-
brate the mission of the School of Business, which is: “To provide a learning environment, offering diverse opportunities for academic and experiential development of all interested stakeholders”. This mission guides our everyday decisions and activities. In the School of Business, we recognize, promote, and cele-brate a diversified culture based on formal academic rigor and informal social networking. Our values follow the highest ethical standards, with a framework of integrity, honesty, accountability, and respect.
In the fall of 2016, we welcome two new faculty members into the School of Business (SB). Both faculty members have not only doctorates in their respective business disciplines, but also private industry experi-ence. Dr. Campbell brings marketing experience and 21st century skills knowledge to the SB. Dr. Scar-borough brings extensive human resources experience and venture capitalist practice to the SB. I also want to congratulate Dr. Deborah Combs on successfully defending her dissertation.
Internship opportunities bring our mission to life by providing hands-on opportunities to our students. It also allows the community and the student to learn from each other, share perspectives (theory and prac-tice) and it delivers business and economic knowledge to both groups. The SB is committed to providing experiential learning opportunities and “hands on” experience to the student body.
Students organizations and their advisors have been especially busy this semester. Delta Mu Delta Interna-tional Honor Business Society (DMD) had two fundraising events and hosted two guest speakers. The Mar-keting Club, the School of Business and DMD participated, together, for the first time in the WNMU Home-coming Parade. Students representing all three departments in the School of Business represented the SB in an Ethics competition in Albuquerque. Lastly, the School of Business, the Center for Gender Equity and DMD joined efforts to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week.
As you know, the School of Business is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Pro-grams (ACBSP). In 2018 the department is up for re-affirmation of our accreditation. To help with this pro-cess, a new School of Business Advisory Board was formed. I would also like to invite the staff and faculty at WNMU, as well as the community to get involved in these efforts and be part of the ACBSP accreditation process. Working as a team, I’m sure the SB will remain accredited.
At the School of Business, we want to build on the relationships we have and create new ones. I am looking forward to hearing from you, the readers. Get involved and be part of the changes in the School of Busi-ness.
Go Mustangs!
Respectfully,
MIGUEL A. VICÉNS, D.E.D, M.B.A
Associate Dean, School of Business Assistant Professor of Management/Entrepreneurship

new school year brings a new leadership team for the School of Business at Western New Mexico University and with that comes a change in direction.
As the School of Business focuses on an upcoming reaccreditation in 2018, new faculty members and a new associate dean will be sharpening their focus on what programs are viable for incoming students.
“I’m very excited and optimistic about the future for the School of Business given the organization and crea-tion of programs that benefit our students and community,” said Dr. Miguel Vicéns, the school’s new Asso-ciate Dean.
Vicéns is in his fourth year as an assistant professor of Management at WNMU. He has served as the direc-tor of the MBA program and the university representative for the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Uni-versities (HACU). Vicéns is planning ambitious goals including program improvements and greater involve-ment in the community.
“I’m confident that as a team, we will be successful in achieving our goals,” said Vicéns. “We invite the busi-ness community to partner with the School of Business and take advantage of its resources.”
Those resources include student internships and use of the Business Assistance Program for small business-es needing guidance.
The school’s new team includes Dr. David Scarborough, a new professor of management who recently taught at Black Hills State University. Scarborough’s background includes a career specializing in human re-source management, statistical analysis and new product development.
Also joining the School of Business is Dr. Charles “Chip” Campbell as a professor of marketing. Campbell has taught in higher education for over 10 years and has over 20 years of experience in organizational mar-keting in several industries.
New and returning faculty members will be joining Vicéns in overseeing curriculum development and enroll-
ment growth. Programs offered through School of Business include degrees in accounting, business man-
agement, general business and marketing. The school also offers a fully online MBA program with optional
focuses on international business, healthcare management, management information systems or instruc-
tional technology and design.
