Workshop on Advance Qualitative Research

The two-day workshop on Advanced Qualitative Research focuses on in-depth understanding of
philosophical and methodological aspects of qualitative research. Qualitative research as an approach
falls under the broader interpretive paradigm and believes in producing knowledge from the
perspective of research respondents. This approach has been widely accepted across the social science
disciplines pertaining to both academic and practice based research. Some of such key disciplines are
media and communication studies, marketing and other areas of management, development studies,
gender studies etc. The empirical insights generated using qualitative research methods has been
helpful in producing knowledge and hence transforming many such disciplines mentioned above.
This workshop, therefore, aims to discuss the key theoretical concepts, methods, and designing
projects in the area of qualitative research leading to the knowledge production process. The learning
outcomes include conceptualizing qualitative research projects and academic writing.

Workshop Facilitator
Aanchal Sharma is an Assistant Professor with Symbiosis School of Media and Communication. Her
major research interest is in the area of Communication for Social Change with a special focus on
gender and development studies. Aanchal is a fellow of MICA, Ahmedabad where as part of her
doctoral research, she conducted an ethnographic enquiry to study participatory communication and
empowerment processes of women self-help group of Uttrakhand. She is also pursuing her Ph.D from
Faculty of Media and Communication, Symbiosis International (Deeemd University). She was a
visiting scholar at IDCE, Clark University, USA where she attended a course on Qualitative Research
Methods.

About SSMC-B
Symbiosis School of Media and Communication, Bengaluru, (SSMC-B) established in 2009, aims to
serve the multi-faceted needs of the media and communication industry in particular, and the society
in general, through education, training and research. It seeks to train students to be competent,
responsible and innovative professionals in the media industry sector, through a program structure that
offers students an academic rigor blended with industry inputs. The institute has carved a niche in the
field of Media and Communication education through its 2-year full time MBA program in
Communication Management. SSMC-B has an industry – oriented contemporary curriculum and
specializations in Advertising, Public Relations and Media Management. The academic program is
delivered through group discussions, case studies, seminars, workshops, industry projects and
internships that enhance the Industry-Academia interface, social responsibility projects that sensitize
future communication professionals to societal issues and needs. Equal emphasis is laid upon co-
curricular activities channelized through specialization aligned clubs and sports.

AboutThe Workshop
The two-day workshop on AdvancedQualitative Research focuses on in-depth

SSMC-B Director
Dr.Triveni Goswami Mathur is a Fulbright
Scholar, with a total experience of 28 years in
the field of academics and the media industry
is the Director and Associate Professor at
Symbiosis School of Media and
Communication, Bengaluru – a constituent of
Symbiosis International (Deemed University). A
Ph.D. in Media and Communication from the
University of Pune, Dr.Mathur has been
teaching core courses in Journalism, Media
Research Methods, Contemporary India; Media
Perspectives and Gandhi and Peacemaking to
both undergraduate and post-graduate level
students in India and the USA and delivered
lectures in leading US universities. Her research areas of interest include
interdisciplinary approach to society through media studies. Also a Rotary
International Scholar to USA, she has held senior academic positions
including member of the Board of Studies of leading educational institutes in
India. She has contributed significantly to study abroad programs in India,
and is an Editorial Board member of the Virginia Review of Asian Studies.
Dr.Mathur began her career as a Journalist in Indian Express and then moved
on to the Press Trust of India serving in Assam and Maharashtra extensively
reporting on ethnic conflicts, politics, crime, business, and social issues. A
former Independent Director on the Board of Directors of Johnson Controls
Automotive Ltd, a leading automotive component manufacturing multi-
national company, Dr.Mathur is an author, translator, editor with published
work.
Workshop Facilitator

Theories and Cultural Studies, Research Methodology, Advanced Qualitative
Research, and Corporate Citizenship.
