RobertBurns(25January1759–21July1796)wasaScottishpoetandlyricist.HeiswidelyregardedasthenationalpoetofScotlandandiscelebratedworldwide.HeisthebestknownofpoetswhohavewrittenintheScotslanguage.

HeisregardedasapioneeroftheRomanticmovement,andafterhisdeathhebecameaculturaliconinScotlandandamongScotsaroundtheworld.Celebrationofhislifeandworkbecamealmostanationalcharismaticcultduringthe19thand20thcenturies,andhisinfluencehaslongbeenstrongonScottishliterature. In2009hewaschosenasthegreatestScotbytheScottishpublicinavoterunbyScottishtelevisionchannelSTV.
