FRAMEWORK

Globalhealthisacknowledgedasaninterdisciplinaryapproachinwhichaddressingsocialdeterminantsofhealth(SDOH)isincreasinglycriticalforaddressingglobalhealthequity(Abeuelezam,AmerJofPublicHealth,2020).• TheWayneStateUniversity(WSU)DepartmentofFamilyMedicine&

PublicHealthSciences(DFMPHS)offeredanewdidacticgraduatecourse,FPH7120:GlobalPublicHealthinSS2019.

• StudentsfrompublicandalliedhealthexaminedapplicationofSDOHtoglobalhealthinterventionsandWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)2030SustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDG).

TheclassinnovativelyintegratedexplorationofSDOHwithSDG.MentoredstudentsfrompublicandalliedhealthexpandedtheirglobalhealthperspectivesbysubmittingabstractsonselectedclasstopicsandSDOHtoaUniversitypeer-reviewedglobalresearchconference.

A13week hybridelectivegraduatecoursewasavailabletopublichealth,medicalandalliedhealthstudents.OnlinedidacticcomponentsandknowledgecontentquizzeswereprovidedthroughanonlinetextbookandWHOwebsitecomponents.Globalhealthexpertguestsparticipatedinanonlinepanel,ledclassgroupsandfacilitatedinteractiveculturalcompetencyexercises.• StudentswereassignedaWHOglobalgeographicarea,withSDOHandSDGwerechosenbymutualagreementwiththeInstructor.

• WSUfacultyandstudentsparticipatedintheclasstoprovideculturalcontextandguidanceforpotentialresearchinformedconsent(Figure1).

• EvaluationwasconductedthroughtheWSUStudentEvaluationofTeachingandqualitativefeedbackfromguestlecturers.

• TheculminatingstudentprojectwasaSymposiuminwhichtheInstructorassignedstudentstoWHOglobalgeographicareas.

Fivementoredstudentssuccessfullysubmittedabstractsforpeer-reviewedposterpresentationsattheinauguralWSUDivisionofResearch2019GlobalHealthJusticeandtheEnvironmentConference“ultimatelybringingclassroomlearningintotherealworld.”

• AlymamahMashrah’stopic‘WomeninEthiopia:AProposaltoUseMobilePhone AppstoReduceHIVInfection’relatedtoherstronginterestinsocialdeterminantsofwomen’shealthandhealtheducation.

• SaraAlosaimyapproached‘ImprovingOutcomesforPatientswithDualHIVandNeglectedTropicalDiseasesinBrazilbyEnhancingAwarenessofPreP’asanexplorationofhealthplatformsforreducinginfectiousdisease.

• PriyaSpencerexplored‘PromotionofaPatient-CenteredCommunity-DrivenMedicalModeltoCombatMulti-DrugResistantTBinChina’addressingbarrierstoeliminationofTBbecauseofdrugtoxicityanddiseaseburden.”

MEDICALEDUCATIONTAKEAWAY:WeEXPLOREDglobalpublichealthandWorldHealthOrganization2030SustainableDevelopmentGoalstoDETERMINEhowSocialDeterminantsofHealthcouldbeintegratedintoaninauguralcourse.WeFOUNDthatWSUSOMFacultyandGraduateStudentswereourmajorresourceinprovidingglobalexpertiseandculturalcompetency.

Thisinterdisciplinaryproblem-basedapproachholdspotentialforincorporationofGlobalPublicHealthandSocialDeterminantsofHealthcomponentsintomedicalandgraduatecurricula.FPH7120willagainbeofferedinSS2021.

The15studentsgenerallyreportedsatisfactionwithclassparticipation,relevanceandgroupinteraction,withanWSUSETdiagnosticsaveragedscoreof4.4onascaleof(1)Stronglydisagreeto(5)Stronglyagree.

Qualitativefeedbackfromstudentsandguestlecturerincluded:• Moretimetoexploretheoverallcontentofglobalpublichealthtoaddresscurrentsituationsandbringconceptstogether,

• Enjoyingtheresearchapproachandhavingmultipleguests,• Symposiumwasagreatidea..wishmorecountriescouldbecovered.
