Preview:

DESCRIPTION

This is graphics from a presentation at the US Canola/American Society of Agronomy Meetings in Long Beach California, November 2014. Data includes yields of winter canola when planted at different dates in the Pacific Northwest U.S. and yields of winter canola with different insect control regimes.

Insecticide Effects on Yield

What Date is Optimum?

Four cultivars ‘Athena,’ ‘Baldur,’ ‘Amanda’ and ‘Salut’.

Sites: Moscow and Lewiston ID, Pendleton OR, and Kalispell MT.

Planting dates: June 15, July 15 and August 15.

Seeding rate: 6 lb per acre.

Soil moisture recorded at each planting date and in October.

Second trial in 2013 and 2014 had three seeding rates.

No Montana site, LaCrosse WA, instead of Lewiston ID

Recommendations for Growers

Chose an adapted variety. Plant into moisture. Plant as late as practical. Monitor soil moisture in fallow. Check weather forecasts. Balance work load. Don’t plant too late (300 GGD).

Control insects. Use a seed treatment. Monitor and spray if needed. Don’t panic. Buy crop insurance.
