THE PRINCIPLES OF GREAT MANAGEMENT

AN EXPAND LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM BY BARRY CONCHIE
Variable manager capability is one of the most cited reasons
given by executive leaders for low to no growth. Without
strong and developing managers, execution is inconsistent,
turnover of talented people becomes too high, and succession
planning falters.
This program is designed to help solve for this problem. Each
of our Expand Leadership courses presents a leading edge,
research-based approach to help individuals think and develop
in their current and future roles.
Our first major course is aimed at driving the highest
performance in managers at all levels. We will challenge more
conventional thinking and behavior. We believe that every
manager can improve and become much more effective.
Our key focus is to present proven, best in class practices that will enable every manager to create the right environment that drives the highest level of engagement and performance.
We know that people join companies but leave managers. By
the end of this course, participants will learn, understand, and
apply the Principles of Great Management in their work.

Unit 1: The Challenges All Managers Face
The course begins with an examination of US data produced by highly credible research organizations, such as Gallup and Towers Watson, that links employee engagement to positive improvements in profitability, revenue growth, positive turnover, retention, and customer satisfaction. Managers will gain a high-level understanding of the seven factors that will enable their team to compete with the very best.
Unit 2: Positive Leadership
We will help participants identify how value is created and show managers how the tactical tasks and activities of their work can drive the long term mission and value of their organization. We will help managers to understand and apply the positive framing of their communications and provide them with tools to gather feedback from their team and to evaluate individual team member effectiveness.
Unit 3: Developing Trust
Trust is established between managers and their teams when behaviors are clear, consistent, and predictable. We will challenge participants to identify the tension points in their values and beliefs, and help them decide where they stand on key issues. We will describe the psychological and behavioral drivers of trust, as well as the issues that undermine its development. To conclude this Unit managers will implement a team trust survey. The results of this survey will help managers build a framework of team operating principles designed to build and sustain high levels of trust over time.
Unit 4: Building Engaged Teams
Every manager must know the difference between table stakes and engagement drivers. Table stakes are the minimal expectations that must be met for all employees. To rise above table stakes, Unit 4 will introduce six key elements that must be present to truly engage a team. Based on the illustrations given of each element, participants will rate themselves, and their team, and walk through known methods used to drive positive behavior in each element.
Unit 5: Putting "A" Players in "A" Roles
In order to position individuals to do what they do best and assemble the best team, every manager must learn to differentiate and prioritize between experience, knowledge, skills, talent and motivation. In Unit 5, we will demonstrate the differences in each category, and explain its importance in selection. Managers will then be given new tools to identify natural talent during the hiring process, and to help develop the capabilities of their existing team.

Unit 6: Measuring Progress and Driving Accountability
Managers who struggle with objective performance measures will fail to set goals that drive long-term, sustainable improvements. This advanced unit will introduce participants to the psychological factors that underpin goal setting and how subjective assessment will hinder performance. Unit 6 will enable participants to identify the metrics and methods that drive strong accountability around performance, and provide the means for setting exponential goals that present the opportunity and motivation for superstars to produce superior results.
Unit 7: Developing Strengths
Here, we teach a new paradigm - that focusing on an employee's strengths is the best way to drive superlative performance. We begin with a conceptual review of the research around strengths-based leadership, including Barb Fredricksen's theory of “Broaden and Build," which has relevance for positive and affirming interactions. Participants are encouraged to take the StrengthsFinder (© Gallup) assessment, or use existing results, to map their strengths and weaknesses to the expectations of their role. We conclude by teaching managers how to conduct a strengths-based performance review.
Unit 8: Building a Culture of Recognition
There is no contradiction between building a positive culture of praise and recognition, and holding your team members to account for their performance. In Unit 8, we spend time dissecting this issue and helping managers to strengthen the culture they create to inspire people to top performance. Building on the principles learned in Unit 2, we explore strategies for praising and recognizing a team for great performance. The approach used may be different for nearly every individual on your team.
Unit 9: The Road Ahead
Ten years of data reveals that the sum total of the efforts of managers around the world is, at best, to produce about a third of employees who are engaged at work. One in five remain obstinately and actively disengaged. We all have to take collective and individual responsibility for this. Rather than restate all that has been learned, Unit 9 will provide an advanced activity in each of the principles of Great Management.
Providing every motivated
manager and leader with the
ideas and tools to become more
effective has the potential to
positively impact millions of lives
around the world. Most people
show up to work each day
wanting to do the right thing, in
a positive environment in which
they can learn, grow, and
succeed. Expand Leadership
exists with these people in mind.
Future programs will target
individual contributors and
technical experts as well as
top-level senior managers and
leaders in companies and
organizations. We wil l be
releasing new programs at
regular intervals over the next
two years.
