“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your

animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the

heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the

seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Exodus 20:8-11

I. The Sabbath for the Israelites

Israel and the Sabbath:

1. It was revealed to them at Sinai (Neh. 9:13-14)

2. It was a sign of their covenant with God (Ezek. 20:20)

3. Violating it was punished by the death penalty (Exod. 31:14; Num. 15:32-36)

4. Sabbath-keeping forbad: a. Work (Exod. 20:8-11) b. Building a fire (Exod. 35:3) c. Buying merchandise (Neh. 10:31)

5. The Sabbath was to be a day of worship (Lev. 23:3; Acts 15:21)

II. The Sabbath for Christians

Sabbath-keeping isn't bound on Christians as it was on

Israel.

16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or

drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.

Colossians 2:16

"And so those who lived according to the old ways

came to a new hope, no longer keeping the Sabbath but living according to the Lord's day, on

which also our live arose through him and his death"

(Ignatius, Letter to the Magnesians 9:1; ca. A.D. 98-

The Sabbath teaches the principle of Grace.

Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

Mark 2:27

The Sabbath teaches the principle of Rest.

Deut. 5:14

"But the seventh day is a sabath to the LORD your

God...so that your male and female servants may rest, as

you do."

The Sabbath teaches the principle of Worship.

There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a

Sabbath of rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a

Sabbath to the Lord.  

Lev. 23:3

The Sabbath teaches the principle of Priority.
