Marine emission – SOx
• Sulphur oxides are formed when the Sulphur in the fuel oxidizes during a combustion process.
• SOx are harmful both to the environment and to human beings (respiratory problems such as asthma,COPD or lung cancer)
• Dissolves in the water in air and form acid rain, destroying fresh water resources, land, buildings and crops.

ALTERNATIVES TO REDUCING NOX AND SOX
23.3.2017 [Presentation name / Author]5
CHANGE TO MGO
Run full time on Marine Gas Oil
(MGO).
Convenient
Small investment
High operating cost
Future availability?
CONVERT TO LNG
Convert engines to run on gas
(LNG).
A solution which also
reduces NOx and
particulates
Investment cost
LNG availability
USE Exhaust Gas Cleaning
Install an exhaust gas
cleaning system (scrubber).
Works with high S HFO
Lowest total lifecycle cost
Use everywhere
Easy operation
ROI depends on fuel oil price
difference between low S fuel
oil and high S HFO (scrubber)
FUEL SWITCH
Switch to low sulphur fuel in
SECA.
Flexible
Small investment
High operating cost in SECA
Fuel change over procedures
Lube oil TBN management
Fuel availability?
Short term solution
© Wärtsilä INTERNAL© Wärtsilä INTERNAL
• Global demand for distillates is likely to increase →
Price of MGO is expected to increase while price of
HFO will stay the same or even decrease
• Scrubbers demonstrated to work in marine
environment
• Scrubbers allow for same bunkering and same engine
operation as before
• European and North American SECA now ratified,
more SECAs can be expected
• Wärtsilä has the largest portfolio of marine scrubber
solutions
• Wärtsilä scrubber solutions are fit for new buildings
and retrofits, for any engine and boiler brands
• Wärtsilä can offer financial solution for potential
projects

WE CAN CUSTOMIZE A SCRUBBER
SOLUTION FOR YOU
© Wärtsilä INTERNAL© Wärtsilä INTERNAL 23.3.2017 [Presentation name / Author]8
Open loop scrubber – sea water operations • Does not need caustic soda
• Water treatment in open loop
• Easy solution
Applications: main alternative for ocean-going ships with focus on the
environment and an easy solution
Closed loop scrubber – closed loop operations• Independent on seawater alkalinity
• Zero effluent discharge an option
• Low power demand
• Needs caustic soda as a reagent
Applications: seas with extremely low alkalinity and for operators
looking for continued closed loop operation
Hybrid scrubbers – open loop / closed loop operations• Flexible system
Applications: ships requiring full flexibility of operations

INTRODUCING
WÄRTSILÄ EGC SCRUBBERS 2020- A solution to meet the global sulphur cap
• Customized solution to meet
global sulphur requirements
• Optimized water treatment system
in open loop
• Energy optimized
systems• Smallest footprint on
the market
• Global service network
• Available for all types of Wärtsilä scrubber systems• Over 200 000 running hours and counting

WATER TREATMENT IN CLOSED LOOP
15
• Small amount of bleed off is taken out of the
scrubbing water circulation and cleaned in the
BOTU (Bleed Off Treatment Unit)
• 5 years of scrubber water treatment experience
• Extensive knowledge about scrubber water
quality
• Capacity 5 m3/h (per unit)
• Very effective for the high concentrations of small
particles found in scrubber water
• Tested and validated technology
Chemical consumption
Coagulant 0,05 – 0,2 l/MWh
Flocculant 0,005 – 0,015

WATER TREATMENT IN OPEN LOOP – SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE
• Easy and reliable technology, known in the market
• Minimal maintenance and replacement due to no moving parts
• Will remove harmful particles from discharge water, that would otherwise be released into the sea
• Benefits the environment, and in the long run, human health
• Will guarantee compliance with strict legislation, even during start-up and switch-overs

Closed loop: 3,5 kg/MWh
Open loop: 0,1 kg/MWh
With dewatering unit:
Closed loop: 1,0 kg/MWh
Open Loop: 0,05 kg/MW

WÄRTSILÄ SCRUBBERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT
18
• Efficient scrubbing technology, removing both SOx and particulate matter
• Scrubbing changes SOx back into sulphates, which occur naturally in seawater
• Our tests show that we often get far below the set equivalent of 3,5%S down to
0,1%S. Thus removing even more sulphur oxides than required by the rules.
• Better for the environment than MGO, as it saves energy (refinery) and removes some
black carbon (PM ≤ 2.5 µm)
• Water treatment units installed on all installations – even in Open loop
• Water treatment will ensure compliance even at tricky conditions e.g. start-up.
• Water treatment will ensure that harmful heavy metals (from the engine soot) will not
be released into the environment
