Shamanism of the peoples of Siberia18 Apr - 20 Oct, Slovenian Ethnographic MuseumThe exhibition Shamanism of the Peoples of Siberia, from the Russian Museum of Ethnography, Saint Petersburg, reveals a unique phenomenon in world civilisation - the mythological worldview of the peoples of Siberia and the Russian Far East in the late 19th and early 20th century - carried out by shamans, as intermediaries between heaven and earth.Sacred objects, together with photographs, sounds and a film of shamanic ecstatic rituals, reflect the special interconnectedness found in the inspiring characteristics of Siberian shamanism, which is made manifest in the inseparable link between man, nature and cultural tradition. Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays
Mighty Guardians of the Past: Castles in the Slovenian Lands18 Apr - 17 Nov, 9:00 - 20:00, Ljubljana CastleThe central thematic exhibition at the Ljubljana Castle in 2019 reveals Slovenia as a country of castles. Castles have always stirred our imagination. Irrespective of their importance and renown, castles, with their might and solidity, from up close or from afar proudly draw our attention to their past role as guardians of the countryside, cities and borders, and of their mainly noble inhabitants. The exhibition in Casemate exposés five Slovenian castles and their associated personalities who marked Slovenia’s past, and with various photographic material and models, the exhibition illuminates the rich heritage that has been preserved for us through the centuries by castles.Open: 9:00 - 20:00

Ljubljana. History. City.Permanent exhibition at the City Museum of LjubljanaThe permanent exhibition about the history of Ljubljana. How well do you know the rich history of Slovenian capital? Therefore, the exhibition proudly highlights local peculiarities, stories of everyday life in the past, and the individuals who left the strongest impressions on our history. Zoran Mušič (1909-2005)Permanent exhibition at the National GalleryZoran Mušič, the best known 20th century Slovenian-born painter and a man with more than one homeland, spent most of his life between Venice and Paris. He mostly painted landscapes, still lives, portraits, Dalmatian donkeys and horses, trees, views of Venice, double portraits with his wife Ida, and poignant self-portraits depicting him as an old man. His visual motifs were always related to the Slovenian region of Kras and its typical scenes. He became world famous with his series of paintings We Are Not the Last, in which he relived the scenes he experienced in the Dachau concentration camp. The most stunning artefact recovered in Ljubljana, beneath Gosposvetska ulica street. A 1,700-year-old transparent blue glass bowl, a little more than eight inches in diameter, was found buried next to the woman at the center of the cemetery. The vessel is decorated on the outside with grapes, and vine leafs and tendrils. A Greek inscription on the inside of the bowl instructs the owner to »Drink to live forever, for many years!« This exquisite drinking bowl could have been used in everyday life as well as possibly for burial ceremonies, whether pagan, Christian or Jewish.

Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra and Mixed Choir will, on the opening concert of The Slovenian Music Days, perform Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony. The Philharmonic Society, founded in 1794, archives contained a manuscript score of this symphony, a copy made in 1808 of the original autograph score used for the Sixth Symphony’s premiere performance in Vienna. What makes the Ljubljana score of Beethoven’s Sixth so valuable, besides its authenticity, are the composer’s own handwritten notes and corrections. Beethoven is also one of the most eminent honorary members of Ljubljana’s Philharmonic Society. The performance of his Pastoral Symphony to mark the bicentenary of his honorary membership will be conducted by Simon Dvoršak.

Lubomyr Melnyk, the piano mag who has been making piano music exciting again alongside Nils Frahm, Olafur Arnalds and other fellow musicians, is bringing the piano closer to contemporary popular music, and in turn winning over young generations of musicians and audiences alike. Lubomyr Melnyk is a true innovator, exploring new directions for contemporary music. Classically trained and greatly affected by the minimalist movement in the early 1970s, the Ukrainian pianist developed his own unique language for the piano, named after the principle of maintaining a continuous, unbroken stream of sound. Playing rapid and complex note patterns made Lubomyr one of the world’s fastest concert pianists.

Choreography: Salva Sanchis, Anne Teresa De KeersmaekerA Love Supreme, a dance quartet created by Salva Sanchis and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, is based on John Coltrane’s eponymous album. In A Love Supreme, Coltrane and his musicians deployed a compelling and deceptively simple musical structure to allow for a complete freedom of improvisation, continuously pushing the boundaries of every musical register. This freedom of creation, i.e. improvisation, allows an entrancing and literal translation into dance: for this performance, the choreographers took on the challenge of blending improvisation and composition into a seamless choreographic whole.

Spring is the perfect time to visit Arboretum Volčji Potok. The flowering of daffodils, announcing the end of winter, first complements our collection of woody plants. As many as 100 different types and varieties of daffodils adorn the park with their yellow flowers, creating a beautiful spring atmosphere. Soon afterwards, the park is graced with the spring tulip exhibition, which changes the image of the Arboretum every day and invite fans of flowers from near and far to see. Amongst the endless fields of colourful tulips, you will find as many as 350 different varieties. Some bloom in the first half of April, whilst the last tulips delight visitors with their flowers in the forest part of the Arboretum.
