More Than We Imagine Ephesians 3:14-21
Featuring Gayle Fee
Gayle is a Las Vegas pastor’s wife, home-schooling mom, and published author. She is passionate about helping women understand and apply God’s Word to everyday life.
Today’s article is a “refrigerator buffet” of thoughts and praises. Not sure what a refrigerator buffet is? When my boys were small, Donna and I coined the phrase for a meal we enjoyed about twice per month. The meal con-sisted of leftovers from the previous week. (When the boys would ask their mom or me about the dinner menu—a question usually asked at the breakfast table immediate-ly after asking what was for lunch, “refrigerator buffet” sounded so much better than “leftovers.”) Depending on the quality of the leftovers, the boys’ response could be an exuberant cheer or a blood-curdling “No!” As I share these Easter leftovers, I’m hoping for cheers. First on the menu: Thanks to everyone for making Easter at Foothills a wonderful celebration! If you haven’t expressed your appreciation to Pas-tor Loren and the members of the choir for their wonderful presentation of The Cross of Christ on Palm Sunday night, please do so. The truths shared and the praise expressed made the evening a worshipful experience as advertised. The time of singing praises on Easter Sunday and exalting our Savior with the choir and worship team culminated a powerful week of ministry. Each of our Sunday School Division Directors went the second mile for Easter. They rallied their workers on Easter morning to create opportunities for members and guests to connect in friendly ways aimed at building deeper relationships. I have no idea how many of you took part in the plans, preparation, and fulfillment of these events. I’m thankful for every volunteer who supported these bridge-building efforts on Easter Sunday. Frankly, I ceased making Easter my “to die for” day of worship long ago. After all, what Jesus did for us transcends a single day of worship. On the Thursday after Easter, the guys in my pastors prayer group asked how all our Easter celebrations went and rejoiced in all the lives
God touched. But I see Easter as more than a high attend-ance event. Instead Easter lets us see immediate possibili-ties for reaching new people and forging bonds with people who’ve become regular attenders. Let me explain what I mean. On most Sundays, we see a good percentage of our members in attendance. Con-versely, many in our church family are out on any Sunday. And some people will be out on Easter as well. But on that day, our attendance can include most of our church family plus many less frequent participants. Easter helps us visual-ize both our real size and our potential. For me, Easter is the celebration of Jesus’ resurrec-tion and the church that lives out the truth of His resurrec-tion. But the church’s witness doesn’t happen by default. Our witness requires vigilance and purpose. So let me sug-gest a couple of purposeful post-Easter actions to reach the people walking through our doors:
As you learn the names of people seated near you dur-ing worship, commit to pray for them by name at least three times during the following week.
When you see those people again, invite them to your Sunday School group. If they come, introduce them to your group and help them build connections.
Invite those new friends to your group’s next social gathering. If nothing is planned, help plan something.
I know these actions are way outside the comfort zone for some of you. But this month’s sermon series “Fearless & Faithful” reminds us not to fear what can’t de-stroy our souls. All of us were once outside of God’s family. All of us needed someone to help us experience God’s love. In the weeks and months ahead, let’s allow God to use us to demonstrate that Christ’s resurrection still chang-es everything! In Christ, Pastor Hoyt
