Mining is an essential industry that promotes socio-economic development of a country. However, health and safety procedures are often neglected during the process of mining which cause several environmental hazards and occupational accidents. Discuss any FOUR negative impacts of mining activities on the environment.

EITHER a. Cosmopolitan cities have a higher standard of living. The life styles of the population of the

urban areas utilize greater amounts of energy resources in every sphere of life than that in rural areas. Mention any FIVE activities of these cities that use electrical energy.

b. Creating awareness about environmental degradation encourages people to respect, preserve and protect the natural world from the harmful effects of human activities. Suggest any FIVE ways to create environmental awareness among the people of a society.

EITHER a. In the past few years, the forests of Swat have been cleared and their lands are used for farms,

ranches and human settlements (Dawn, 14th September 1997). This deforestation has created an imbalance in the ecosystem affecting its biotic and abiotic components. Describe any FIVE of these effects.

OR b. Desertification refers to the transformation of a vegetative land into a desert. This can occur due

to variation in the climate or due to certain human activities. Suggest any FIVE ways to overcome the damages of desertification.
