In the 1930s two of Amersham-on-the-Hill’s main attractions were theRegent Cinema and the PlayhouseTheatre.

The Regent Cinema on SycamoreRoad opened in 1928. With seatingfor 700 people it was built byColwood Pictures, a partnership oflocal people including AlfredWoodley. Dwindling audiences in the1950s resulted in its closure and itwas demolished in 1962.

Entertainment

The Playhouse Theatre occupied thebuilding where Amersham AuctionRooms is today. Originally named theBijou Hall in 1907, the buildingprovided a venue for dances andconcerts. It later became a cinema –the Pavilion Cinema & Café – beforeopening as a theatre in 1936. Thetheatre had seating for 240 peopleand had a regular programme fromthe Amersham Repertory Players.Many famous people performedthere, including Dirk Bogarde.
