Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati is your destination for the best in contemporary theatre. We strive to produce shows that engage our community as we look with a social conscience to what is happening now in our world. Our productions enrich, excite and, undoubtedly, entertain. We begin this season with the Tony Award-nominated Good People that looks at what happens when we are a paycheck away from despair and a heartbeat away from the dreams of our youth. Mrs. Mannerly is a welcoming, wicked comedy about the process of becoming and overcoming ourselves. Alice in Wonderland takes us down the rabbit hole and invites us to play croquet with the Queen, a toe-tapping, all-around adventure that will make this a warm holiday season. Switching gears, Freud's Last Session occurs on the eve of London’s entrance into World War II when two great men meet and discuss matters of the mind and heart. Black Pearl Sings! sets two women on a journey to capture the history of African-American music while creating their own futures, entwining their lives forever. Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps & Gowns allows us to hear the next chapter in the lives of these four delightful women sung to the songs we love. This long anticipated sequel takes us back to 1958 and 1968 when everything and anything was possible. Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati has been a key ingredient in the reinvention of Over-the-Rhine, proving the power of theatre to transform neighborhoods, dreams and lives. And, you play a vital supporting role in this effort. You are more than a spectator at our theatre; you are part of our ensemble. I invite you to be a part of ETC and the Over-the-Rhine experience this season.

2011 TONY AWARD NOMINEE FOR BEST PLAY REGIONAL PREMIERE. Margie Walsh can’t catch a break. Laid off from her job at the dollar store, she is faced with the reality that South Boston is providing her the same level of opportunity it always has: none. Wry, rough around the edges and ready to make a change, she goes to seek out the one who got away. Instead, she finds herself in the ‘burbs and out of her element, facing the question: is opportunity granted or earned?

REGIONAL PREMIERE. This irreverent, yet poignant comedy is inspired by the hilarious memories of a childhood etiquette class, wherein playwright Jeffrey Hatcher conjures up the world of a ten-year-old studying manners. Set in 1967, Mrs. Mannerly is a demanding teacher, and no student in her thirty-six years of etiquette classes has ever received a perfect score. But, when he discovers her secret past, Young Jeffrey is determined to be the first to achieve this feat. This unique comic tale reveals truths about the face we present and the real selves that lie inside.

Freud's Last Session
REGIONAL PREMIERE. This spirited drama centers on legendary psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, who invites a then little-known professor, C.S. Lewis, to his home in London. Lewis, expecting to be called on the carpet for satirizing Freud in a recent book, soon realizes Freud has a much more significant agenda. On the day England enters World War II, Freud and Lewis clash on the existence of God, love, sex and the meaning of life—only two weeks before Freud chooses to take his own.

REGIONAL PREMIERE. Set during the Great Depression, Susannah travels the country, recording lost traditional songs. Hoping to find the one song that will bring her long-awaited recognition, she discovers Pearl Johnson in a Texas prison. With a silky, soulful voice and a wealth of African-American spiritual songs, Pearl seeks information and a chance at freedom. This moving drama chronicles a powerful story about being a woman in a man’s world, being black in a white world, and fighting for one’s soul in a world where anyone can be a commodity.
"Richly underscored by emotionally deep a cappella singing…This is a gem of a play that will renew your faith in humanity."—Chicago Critic
