2‘‘Seagull has been a tremendous help to Charlie and a blessing to our family. Everyone has been so understanding about his medical issues. He has opened up so much more since we put him in SAIL, and he’s developed real friendships with the other students.” Idi and Aura Kenner, guardians of Charlie

During the 2016-17 year, Seagull Services touched more lives than at any time in its near 40-year history, and at the same time we continue our focus on implementing a strategic plan to ensure quality services and a strong financial future for the agency.
We’re especially proud to share that our charter school, Seagull Academy for Independent Living (SAIL), attained a 10-year renewal of its charter by the Palm Beach School District. This sets the stage for the continuation of our partnership with the district to educate and prepare youth with developmental disabilities for independent and fulfilling futures. This achievement is a testament to the quality education that SAIL provides as 10-year renewals are a rarity among charter schools in Palm Beach County.
Seagull Services has achieved exponential growth in the agency’s impact through our school-based food pantry, serving nearly 1,000 people during the last fiscal year. In recent years, it has become clear that one of the most successful ways of addressing hunger among children is through school-based food distribution centers to supplement federally funded breakfasts and lunches students eat at school. More than half of the students in Palm Beach County come from families where food is inadequate to meet their growing needs. This figure is even higher at SAIL. The food pantry improves the lives of our students and their families, as well as our neighbors in the community who suffer from food insecurity by providing them with more nutritious food on a monthly basis.
Seagull Services also was successful in expanding its vocational education and supported employment opportunities, which greatly benefits both the students and adults that we serve. With additional staff and partnerships with the Florida Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, the students as well as adults served in our Achievement Center have more opportunities for success in the work environment.
As demand for specialized programs for older adults with developmental disabilities continues to grow, we are continuing to enhance an initiative that we began three years ago, focusing on those dually diagnosed with both a developmental disability and dementia. We continue to refine and expand our program, thus allowing seniors to continue their lifestyle and age in place.
Our achievements would not be possible without the help of many organizations and individuals who support us, including Seagull’s dedicated staff and Board of Directors. The children and adults with disabilities who we serve have a critical safety net of support because of the contributions from corporate, foundation, and individual supporters and loyal volunteers who give their time generously to Seagull’s programs. We are ever grateful to the long-term support from the Town of Palm Beach United Way, United Way of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach County School District, and the Palm Beach County Board of Commissioners.

voLuNteeRsThe invaluable gift of time is one of the most meaningful gifts a person can give. Each day,
volunteers give their time and attention to us at Seagull Services in numerous ways. Perhaps it is through teaching a skill, such as music, yoga, or art. Perhaps it’s lending a hand, such as coaching,
or chaperoning a field trip, an out-of-town sports event, or dance. Often it’s by sharing a meal or making holidays truly special. To all 415 of our volunteers who have given so selflessly to enhance the
quality of life of our program participants and extend the impact Seagull has in the community, we thank you.
